Welcome to my first-time watching as we react to Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2008). Even though this is not the last film in the Pirates saga it definitely felt conclusive to a lot of storylines that had been built throughout all 3 films.
In this third installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is trapped in Davy Jones' Locker, and it's up to Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), and Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) to rescue him and stop the East India Trading Company from conquering the seas.
The cinematography, score and mesmerizing visuals especially in the third act had us in absolute awe. This film effectively kept us immerse in this crazy world of pirates even at it's craziest moments.
We hope that you enjoy our reactions, commentary and review as we discuss the fantastic score, great action sequences, our amazement with the CGI and how the entire "Flying Dutchman" crew looked, how Calypso's wrath was depicted and why we believe Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is a worthy conclusion to a lot of the storylines we've been following and have enjoyed since the first film.

Brief background about Jack: He originally worked for Beckett and when Beckett wanted him to ferry slaves, he freed them all and turned his back on Beckett, leading to his label as a proper pirate as recognized by the British Empire. Beckett burned the Black Pearl (Then the Wicked Wench) as it technically belonged to the East India Company. Jack and the ship went down and Davy Jones appeared. That's when Jack made the deal that comes due in Dead Man's Chest. Ten years for he and his ship in exchange for 100 years of service on the Dutchman.

There's a nice deleted scene i wish they kept. When Jack and Beckett talk there's some extra dialogue where it's revealed that the reason Beckett hates him is because Jack stole one of his ships and the valuable cargo inside to which Jack replies "People aren't cargo, mate" meaning he freed a ship full of slaves. I wish they kept it because it says so much about Jack. He may be a pirate and may for the most part be out for himself but there are some things he will absolutely not allow on his watch

Jack died in the last film after their kiss, Sao Feng dies IMMEDIATELY after forcing a kiss on her, and James dies within a minute of kissing her. Will kissed her more often than anyone else, but before the movie was over... Pirates are sailors, and sailors are superstitious. In pirate circles, this is going to give Elizabeth a reputation, lol! 🤣 That should make it very easy for her to stay true to Will.

  • @meganlodon
    @meganlodon Před měsícem +36

The song at the beginning, _Hoist the Colors,_ was written for the movie to tell the tale of Calypso, Jones, and the Court. Below is my analysis.
    *The Chorus:*
    _Yo ho, haul together_
    _Hoist the colors high_
    _Heave ho, thieves and beggars_
    _Never shall we die_
The chorus is sung numerous times within the song. It's basically telling the pirates, full of thieves and beggers, to get ready to set sail. The lyrics here are obvious in meaning.
    *First verse:*
    _The King and his men_
_stole the Queen from her bed_
_and bound her in her bones_
The King was the Pirate King at that time, and while his identity is unknown, I believe him to be Jones himself. The King's men refers to the Brethren Court. The Queen is Calypso, her bed is the sea, and binding her in her bones refers to binding her to her human form.
_the seas be ours and by the powers_
    _where we will we'll roam_
The seas literally belong to the pirates due to having power over Calypso.
    *Second verse:*
    _Now some have died_
    _and some are alive_
    _and others sail on sea_
This is a reference to the chorus of the song, which mention the pirates as thieves and beggars. This part of the verse is obvious in meaning.
_with the keys to the cage_
    _and the Devil to pay_
The "keys" to the cage are the nine Pieces of Eight, which were used to bind Calypso. The Devil refers to Davy Jones himself since he's the one that told the Brethren Court how to bind her; he's also a devil of sorts, or what I like to call, an ocean-bound Hades.
    _we lay to Fiddler's Green._
Fiddler's Green is an after-life of paradise for sailors where a fiddle never stops playing, but in the POTC universe, it is a tavern located in Davy Jones' locker. It might have a fiddle playing inside to fit the narrative.
    *Third verse:*
    _The bell has been raised_
    _From it's watery grave..._
_Do you hear it's sepulchral tone?_
    _A call to all_
    _Pay head the squall_
_And turn your sails to home!_
This entire verse may refer to the scene of POTC where the pirates sing their song, and the Brethren Court is summoned to join together. A "all pirates unite" type of moment.

My favorite subtle side-plot: Will's Sword.
In the first movie, Will is presenting a ceremonial sword to Commodore Norrington for his advancement, who then holds onto it until his dismissal between the first and second movie.
In the second movie, it can be seen in the background of Cutler Beckett's office.
In the third movie, it is returned to Norrington's hand upon reinstatement. Norrington takes a literal stab at Jones with it in his final moment, where Jones then compliments it and gives it to his crew. That crew member drops it on the dutchman during the final maelstrom battle, where it is then picked up by an East Indian Trading Company crewman but is snatched by Jones and used to run through the crewman. Jones then holds onto the sword for the remainder of the battle until he uses it...to kill Will.
Yes, the very sword Will arrived carrying at the Swan Household at the start of the franchise, the "very fine sword" he made, is the sword that ended his mortal life.

After watching a bunch of your videos and hearing your opinions on different things, I think you guys would really enjoy The Expanse. The attention to detail is next level, the writing is extremely tight, and characters behave like real, mature adults. It's really refreshing.
I won't even cry for a reaction for it, because The Expanse doesn't do huge numbers, but it does perform extremely consistently, its fans are hardcore. I just think you guys would really really enjoy it, regardless if you do it for the channel or not.

The original trilogy for PotC really is a masterclass in storytelling and writing. Everyone has a goal, everyone has an angle, everyone is trying to gain leverage over one another in an attempt to further their own ambitions, and it's brilliant just how complex of a story you can get seeing all the characters clash with each other to do so. And then there's Jack, whose own goals and desires constantly change, making him the perfect agent of chaos to throw a wrench in everyone else's plans ... it's just incredible.

This is my 2nd favorite film of the POTC franchise!! It's dense and complex without talking down to the audience or feeling the need to explain every single little doublecross. AND, it shows just how cunning Jack really is. He manipulates Beckett into revealing the location of the heart, manipulates Will into leading the armada to Shipwreck Cove, he's watching Barbossa closely and his interactions with Tia Dalma, and at the cove he makes a show of identifying his Piece of Eight, which will come into play later. *As the son of the Keeper of the Code* he has _some_ inside knowledge of what actions need a Pirate King, but maybe doesn't know what the King is capable of. So he manipulates the Court to have someone call for the Code to be brought out (though maybe bringing the Keeper out with it was not what he had in mind). Once he is able to see what the King can do (Oh, parlay, huh?), he calls for a vote, already knowing that Elizabeth wants to fight and putting her in the position.
On the sandbar, she realizes why Jack did it -- he wants aboard the Dutchman, so she makes the deal for Will, and you can clearly see that they both know this is Jack's plan and they are on his side. He makes only the slightest protest and simply "gives in" when Elizabeth reminds him she is the King, and the fact he just accepts that is what tells Barbossa finally that these three are plotting behind his back. Cutting Jack's Piece of Eight off confirms his plan to go through with freeing Calypso, and now both of them are fully aware of the other's plan.
So Barbossa warns Jack, "If you have something to say [[about me swiping your piece of eight and what I might do with it]], I might be saying something myself [[about the fact you just found a way to get on Davy's ship to get to his heart]]." And Jack calmly replies, "First to the finish, then?" [[You make your play and I'll make mine and let's see who wins.]]
And again we see that Jack is a GOOD man. When the ultimate prize is LITERALLY in his hand, he gives it up for someone else. And the whole time Elizabeth is begging to stay with Will, he literally _drags_ her away and to safety to get back aboard the Pearl to finish the fight. He's truly brilliant, and we start to see how much of his behavior is really and act to make others underestimate his skills.

What do you mean Norrington started out as an a-hole? He NEVER was. Just because he was Will's competition doesn't make him a bad guy. The writers never turned him into an asshole or a bad guy just so that Will stands out more. He did everything for Elizabeth in the first movie, he was even willing to jump after her after she fainted and fell into the water. (his men stopped him because the rocks might have killed him). And he was willing to save Will for her. He loves her. And in the end he did the honorable thing and accepted that Elizabeth didn't love him. But even Elizabeth said that he was a good man and every woman should be glad to have him, which is true. He always was good and honorable and he would've treated Elizabeth like a queen. Tbh Elizabeth can have Will, I prefer James.

The ending, while bittersweet, is still better than the alternative. Will was essentially dead, and his new wife and best friend, essentially made the decision for him, because they knew he'd rather have one day every ten years with the love of his life and a new lifetime with his father at sea, than to lose both all together. Such a perfect ending to the Will/Elizabeth story. It harkens back to the old Greek tragedies where even when heroes win, they often lose something, or are left cursed as a result. It's similar to Frodo in the LotR movies.
It's a shame the latter Pirate sequels were never able to obtain the level of epic awesomeness and great writing that Gore Verbinski did with this trilogy.

    • @mformotivation9152
      @mformotivation9152 Před měsícem +1

Davy Jones was supposed to be the ferryman. he was to reside between life and death and wasn't meant to leave his "locker" and be seen on normal waters. the fact that he left his post and started to roam as he pleased is why he's cursed to be a monster. Will obviously can't do that.
howerer, Elizabeth could technically join Will on the Dutchman (as part of the crew) or go through the whole waterfall thing again to visit him (though finding that waterfall is easier said than done). But overall it's not restricted in that sense.
