This song changed my life. I wasn’t in a good place as a young man but that changed one night. I took mushrooms and sat in front a speaker at my brother’s house for six hours with this album on repeat. No one noticed, we were all tripping. The words and music spoke to me, told me that I could evolve mentally and spiritually. It showed me I wasn’t the only one struggling to crawl out from under their rock and look at the sun.
Changed me forever, for the better. These guys are the best at what they do. Thanks for doing this one!

Ender7 your comments gave me chills. They’re one of my very favorite bands, I saw them on their first ever tour and it was life altering, a spiritual, transcendent experience. I’m a retired firefighter of 27yrs, I struggle with depressive holes and mental health issues occasionally, due to nearly 30yrs of seeing people at the worst times of their lives. Nothing works like music…it along with my loving wife and dogs are THE ONLY things that can pull me out.
Thank you for sharing, it made my evening. Especially since I’ve tripped more times in my life than I can count and when you’re dialed in to your surroundings, it’s a very special feeling.

So i am an absolute sucker for lyrics because i am writing poetry myself and this song is a masterpiece let me tell you.
He is basically singing about the next step in human evolution.
46&2 is referring to the amout of chromosomes in humans.
46 is the current amount and two additional chromosomes is assumed to be the next step towards ascend.
When he is talking about the shadow he is speaking in the idea of a very famous psychologist Carl G. Jung who speaks of the shadow quite often in his work.
The idea behind it is that every individual has a dark side.
A shadow they have to overcome.
My shadow is a lack of self discipline for example.
My mission as an individual is it to integrate the shadow of my personality into my live and learn to live with it in the best way possible.
This is the theme of this song.
    Shedding skin.
Stepping through the shadow and comming out the other side.
    Committing to metamorphosis.
    Be part of human evolution.
Find the next step towards greatness.
This shit is motivating me to study physics.

It never gets old seeing someone experiencing Tool for the first time! I am a classically trained musician/singer/songwriter who had an original alt-heavy rock band in the 90s. When Tool came out, it was like they’d reinvented the wheel. There was a lot of anti Tool sentiment from the “grunge” (for a lack of a better word) or classic rock scenes. As a trained musician, I could understand just how sonically mind blowing Tool’s music is. Keep in mind, we’re still in the age of the “guitar hero” of 80’s metal of varying genres. I hated gratuitous guitar solos & loved that Adam Jones was using his instrument to create & build intense moods. I appreciated each one of Tool’s members for their musicianship, for their dedication to creating something new & incredibly powerful. As a songwriter, Maynard’s lyrics & otherworldly sounding voice blew me away & challenged me to push my own writing. Justin’s dense riffs make songs come alive & OMG Danny Carey!!! Drum God who is a gift to this world. THIRTY years of loving Tool & it never gets old. I love how you now love them too! Share the love!! ❤️🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼❤️

Not that you could adequately find for a 20min video, anyways.

      The composition of the music.
      The building layers...
      Truly on a different level.

The other day I was listening to this song in my car with my wife, and suddenly the lyrics made so much more sense to me. I've been doing major work with my therapist digging into my traumas from a past filled with abuse and pain. This song is about digging into what you've been hiding from yourself, the past pain and trauma, digging into the infected wounds on your heart, healing, and moving through the shadows and darkness and evolving to a higher state. It's very psychological, and I am once again in awe of how deep Tool's lyrics are.

This song is amazing. The lyrics are basically about picking and digging through the crap from your past that messes you up and keeps you from being better. The scabs are the traumas that you allow to shape you, and picking them off exposes the trauma and allows you to process, understand, and truly leave it behind. Tool's the shit

This song is about Carl Jung and Froids theory on the shadow Aka the unconscious mind and the ego the conscious mind becoming one to become one’s true self and to evolve the normal 46 chromosomes to 48 hence 46 & 2 there’s a lot more to it then that but that’s pretty much the basics 🌀

    • @michaelnurge1652

I always thought it was referring to the 46 chromosomes, among which human chromosome #2 is a merger of two chromosomes, unique from the other great apes (who have 48).
So, it's human psyche, which is made possible by chromosome #2...among other things of course. So homo sapiens = 46 & 2. Basically, the shaping of human nature.

My brother, Bobby, was a HUGE tool fan. Loved A Perfect Circle, too. Before he passed, we talked about his funeral. He didn’t want the typical music you’d hear at a funeral. Nothing sad. He wanted me to play nothing but Tool and A Perfect Circle at his wake.
You know, it’s crazy, but my brother wanted this song played when he was buried. It’s funny when I remember the looks I got when I placed my phone under his casket… but I felt Him and I know he approved. The looks I got when I played this song as they put his casket in the ground…. He would have loved it. Love you, Babo:)

This was another one that ripped the airwaves right in two(wink wink) I sound like such an old fuddy-duddy right now but I really miss the 90s when music like this was actually being played on the radio regularly. This was the album that had a lot of songs that I guess the general public deemed worthy of airplay. Thank goodness for it though because it brought in a whole Army of people who are still fans to this day.

The music is always tracked before Maynard ever puts lyrics to a song. It's another thing I've always appreciated about my favorite band, everyone has their chance to shine. It's not just all about Maynard, it's about the band as a whole.
Great reaction btw. I'm gonna second the request for Right In Two. It's actually tied for my favorite, with Parabol/Parabola. That would also be an interesting watch. I would love to see some reactions to the videos they've done for the singles.

If you've ever seen Tool live, you know they put on a hell of a show. They arrange the set list, visuals and dynamics of their concerts like an acid trip... They build things up slowly to a frenzy, then calm it back down multiple times during the show, creating a whole body experience at every show. I highly recommend seeing them live. It brings their music to life. I've had the privilege of seeing them twice. Once during the Lateralus tour, and once before they were really known and were way down the list of main stage bands at Lalapalooza 1993.

POLO!!! I love your tool reactions and subbed to see more! I notice you commenting on how Maynard’s vocals always seem to match perfectly with the instrumentation of the band. Allow me to shed a little light on that. It comes down to the recording process that tool has opposed to your average band. They actually write, play, and perfect their songs first and THEN Maynard listens, contemplates, and draws inspiration from im his mates to then write and record lyrics/vocals to. This is the secret ingredient that creates such perfect accentuation and symbiotic play between the instruments and vocals. Aside from the fact that they’re meant for eachother of course! Cheers and bring on the reactions bro! Try “right in two” when you get a chance and ABSOLUTELY “invincible”

Hey Polo. You've made comments in alot of your Tool reactions asking about what that sound is, how they make it sound that way, whats that called etc. I'm a musician, I play guitar in a rock/metal band and Tool are my literal favourite band too. So I know ALOT about the music side of Tool if you want to know anything.
Just post a reply to this (I'm gonna copy/paste this into several Tool videos so you can ask about specific songs and all that) and let me know what you are interested in finding out. You can drop time stamps for your video with the part in question or just give me an idea what part you want to ask about. But yeah I absolutely LOVE breaking Tool songs down myself, so I'll happily type out a 10 paragraph comment for you going into as much detail as you want mate. Just let me know whether its the music side of things, like the notes, the rhythm, the way the instruments blend together etc. or more the instrument side of things (like what they do to make their sound more heavy, metal etc, their instruments used and how that affects things, their amplifiers, their other equipment etc). I'll happily talk both or either like I say.
Right, let me know if I can answer any of your questions about this song dude. Love your channel by the way!
