For Indian culture, music, especially classical music, is meditative. So when artists perform on stage, people tend to sit still and listen - that's the respect they give the artists and the art form. Another thing is that we are used to such classical performances. That explains the lack of external reactions :)

This stage performance of Chithraji was minute compared to what Lataji performed in Royal Albert Hall. Lata left everyone flabbergasted. Her first 3 lines filled whole hall with applauses.
Mind your words.... Lata Mangeshkar was an institution in herself.
Lataji got w;orld recognition in 70s along with Ashaji. Chithra is like student of Lata Mangeshkar. Only top class classical singer can know the level of goddess Lata Mangeshkar. She never ruined anyone's career intentionally. She was extremely talented by birth which is not her mistake.

As Ahsas said below, in North Indian classical music we would call those runs taans. I believe the Carnatic classical music equivalent might be the gamaka

Beautifully composed and sung by two legends. @ Our stupid reactions actually it has been known for some Indian classical artists to stop performing if the audience gets too animated or vocal during performances! Experiencing Indian classical music is considered like being on a spiritual journey and to show your respect for the artist is to listen with rapt silence. The audience can then show their appreciation after the performance is over.

They are tuned and expecting that much from those talented singers and the audience are transported to that level of divinity almost meditating there. That’s Indian style

@Rick and @Korbin, You guys should react to Chitra's padariyen padipariyen tamil song composed by Isaignani Ilayaraja (Raja Sir). It was a fusion of Carnatic and folk which also brought her national award.

To add to Ajit… compare it to opera. No Mather how oawesome and orgasmic the music is, the audience is silent. It will be considered atrocious behavior to loudly express your appreciation. They show it by being focused on the music

People from the south of India ie the audience here, they are know to be composed no puns. Emotions are contained. In an expressive world it can come across as cold.

I feel the reasons we don't react like that is because we've really grown up with it, it's everyday for us; while Ks chithra and sharreth are geniuses, India has soooo many people who're amazing, that we don't even bat an eyelid

Classical Indian music is devine. It's more about devinity in its purest form which connects you to levels which cannot be perceived. Hence here in India listening to classical music you go quite, calm and try to reach out to that divinity.

In India, it is the love of people and the admiration of peers and senior maestros that makes someone revered as 'ustaad' or 'maestro'; instead of accolades any specific person or institute.

Hello guys.. I understand wen u said the audiences sitting still like it's all expected😅.. Truth is it's really expected... The singers are legends.. .. And we won't be surprised to hear them singing like this and like one guy commented, classical music is like kind of a meditation for us, we get so pulled into it deeply, that usually we don't move.... And I love what u guys do really... Appreciating and enjoying arts from different culture...
