  • It has been 17 years since my Guru and Mentor, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra left us to continue our journey and pave the way ahead with his leading light.
During my Odissi training with Guruji, from 1988-2004, there have been several experiences that made a strong base for my dance that gave me a canvas on which I continue to paint my visions. Whatever stirs my heart and mind, I am able to translate it into a dance choreography.
As I continue with my practice, I find immense solace, support, and conviction in the understanding of the purpose and essence, when I dance the Ashtapadis from the Gita Govind, written by the 12th century Poet Jayadeva.
Numerous texts and commentaries are written along with the translation of the Ashtapadis, from Sanskrit to various languages. None were enough for me to understand the spirituality entwined with the sensuous and the erotic language of the Ashtapadis. It was only when I learnt them set to dance, by Guruji, that I began understanding the significance of the hidden meaning of the greatly lyrical poem. Watching Guruji dance the verses with so much divinity, the characters of Radha, Krishna and the Sakhi, epitomized the essence of its philosophy, the madhura bhava bhakti that transcends the mundane to the mystic, the human to the divine, and the profane to the sacred.
These choreographies are vital to the dance itself and need to be archived for the future generation to even get a glimpse of what they mean. I have attempted to record a few of them, that I learnt from guruji, keeping the choreography exactly the way, he taught, only for the benefit for more people to understand them, the way I did.

So reminds me of our late great Guruji. Brought back many many memories! A maturely assimilated abhinaya based on Jayadev’s ashtapadi presented beautifully, with a dignified restraint and grace by Smt Kaishiki. Wow!🤩

      Will do . Thanks .
Have recorded 6 ashtapadis and will be recording two more soon. I wish to preserve these masterpiece choreographies exactly the way I learnt and understood them from my Guru. Specially for my students at Kaishiki Nrityabhasha.
