  • Part 2 - I have upped the power on this 03 C5 Corvette and now it is time to upgrade the suspension. Follow along as I upgrade and swap in the 2013 C6 Z06 shocks to increase the performance of my C5.

    SnapOn (maybe others?) sells at least 3 sockets (A137, A138, A139) that fit on the end of shocks to hold the shaft. A139 fit perfect on my original, and replacement 2002 C5 coupe shocks.

    I recently purchased a 2004 C5 and I love it. I've watched several of your videos and put a few of them to use. I replaced both of the front and rear shocks with Bilstein and the car rides much better. The problem I have now is the 80 MPH limit. I've read the forums and what is being said is that ride control can be bypassed with resistors on 1998 to 2002. 2003 can be bypassed with the GM tech 2 and 2004 may or may not be able to be bypassed. Some are saying you have to run original shocks on the 2004 and they can't be changed. I was hoping you'd have some input on this because some of the speed limits around here are 75 MPH and the 80 MPH limit the car has now doesn't give you much passing power. Thanks

    Hi there. Subscriber here that watches all of your videos. Question about the install: I picked up the new c6 z06 shocks but I didn’t see where you talked about the upper shock mount. I guess I could use the old upper pancake rubber mount but how does it even mesh up with the new long c6 z06 rubber mount that goes underneath it?

    Thanks for these two shock vids... and all the other C5 vids you make. I'm a bit undecided if i should do a shock upgrade or just get new shocks spec'd for my car.
    I too have wheel hop and started to address with a diff mount made by a guy in Georgia. Like me he is a design engineer and I seemed to connect with him and his (American small business) effort.
    My 04 Z06 has about 37k on it and I was getting really bad hop on the drag strip. As I found out, the major contributor really wasn't wheel hop. The majority of it was rear diff displacement which felt like wheel hop. Swapped the diff mount and now in my estimation 90% of the "hop" is gone. I am far more confident I won't break anything and no longer am afraid to launch hard and power shift.
    Like you I still get a little tire hop. I see it either at initial launch or up in the 5-6k rpm area in 1st gear. I now have confidence of staying in the throttle all the way through it.
    Here is a vid I made of the mount (before / after towards end)

      Awesome videos! Thank you for taking the time to make and comment to this. I agree that this is clearly a material part of the issue. GM had to do it for NHV for 99% of the people. For the 1 percent of us, it is too much movement.

    I have a 2001 coupe. I like the ride and do not plan to compete with it. One problem with the suspension. After lowering the rear about 1/2 inch so the rear was level with the front, the rear will sound like it bottoms out when I go over a sharp bump, like railroad tracks. Would replacing the rear shocks alone correct the problem with out adversely affecting the balance of the suspension.

    • @Toys4Life
      @Toys4Life  Před 2 lety +1

      If your rear shocks are weak, it would definitely help. Consider upgrading to C6 ZO6 shocks if you want to firm it up quite a bit otherwise just stock new C5 shocks.

      @@Toys4Life My shocks are not leaking and the car only has 70,000 miles. What I was most curious about (possible something that you can't answer) is would the z06 shocks on the rear work okay with the stock shocks on the front...?

    • @Toys4Life
      @Toys4Life  Před 2 lety +1

      It would work, but I would suggest doing all four of them or none of them. Mine had about 70,000 when I replace them a couple of years ago. When I took my old shots off they actually still seem to be in pretty darn good shape, but the C6 ZO6 shocks are physically bigger and much more dampening. There's a couple videos on the shock swap out on my channel if you're interested. Your only other choice is to raise your car up a little bit to get more travel.

    other improvements would be strut tower braces installs and sway bar upgrades. all cars dragstically improves in handling with these upgrades. my 01 corvette convertible has the stock brakes but I will be upgrading to brembo or wilwood brake calipers as well. I already have the slotted cross drilled rotors.

    • @Toys4Life

      Unless you're a pretty serious track guy, I don't think the brakes need any upgrading whatsoever in my humble opinion. But if you do road courses the more breaking capacity the better!

    Did your shocks have oil residue around the seal when you took them out of the box? I just opened brand new set and there is some residue. Brand new. I can compress them by hand on the bench putting my upper body weight on them(280lbs guy) and otherwise I have no reason to believe they are faulty. Just curious.

    Nice to hear that the C6 upgrade afforded improvement, but since it did not eliminate the wheel hop, any more "tricks" that you may try? I suppose ultimately the answer lies with installing coil-overs, but that's a lot of money. Save the Wave.

    • @Toys4Life
      @Toys4Life  Před 5 lety

      After seeing up close how the shocks mount, it's clear to me that gm had no intentions of the shock mounts carrying the load of the vehicle via coilovers. I think the next step is harder bushings in the A-Arms.
