  • In this video I talk about my process on how I was able to grow my eBay store selling low end sports cards. It was a slow process and I have not even reached the full potential of what can be achieved. Mind you, I only do this part time, but have seen some good success so far. This is what I did and what it comes down to is consistency!

    One nice thing about selling inexpensive cards, is that you know that the buyer is probably a collector, rather than a big time investor.

    • @JoshUnboxed824

      Excatly! There's so much investor content these days, that the small time collector's get a little left out. Even though it's nice to see these expensive cards, it's not always realistic for some. Most collectors appreciate having the card rather than worrying about if it will gem or not. However, collectors do prefer to have nice condition cards as well so I usually price my cards accordingly based on condition as well.

      Thanks! Just gotta keep it moving and being consistent. It took time to get here, but all that consistency has paid off in a sense to help keep sales coming. Start small and don't be in a rush to grow too fast. At one point I went up too fast and I had to scale back down and work up again because it was too much at the time. It's ok to start small and stay that way for a bit, just keep staying consistent with whichever goal you choose!

    Excellent video, I have thousands of cards and was wondering to sell them in bulk. Not sure if I should open my eBay store and sell them or just get rid of them in bulk and cash out?

    • @JoshUnboxed824
      @JoshUnboxed824  Před rokem

      I think it depends... selling a lot of bulk/commons may take a lot of time. Selling lower end cards not only take time to sell, but it will also require more work (with listing, shipping, etc). I, for one, love it, but it may not be for everyone. While I think there is plenty of opportunity in the space, some may not see the value in it. If you are willing to put in the work, then it can be beneficial. Cashing out is an option, but you may not get full value, however, you may be able to sell them all quickly that way.

    I ordered some plastic clam shell cases and for whatever reason they were packed with a handful of resealable team bags. So I thought why not just repack my base cards into 20-30 card lots/packs?
    I try to put sets together. I live in an apartment and I don't want to keep unused base cards piled up, selling them one by one. I'd like to throw them into lots and sell them that way.
    Any insight into how well base cards can sell in little 20-30 packs/lots? I guess I could list as "set builder" or something.
    Thanks!

    I have a comic book store they are more into pokemon and comics. But they do have a small selection of sport cards. I was thinking about with my ebay payout to go buy some 1990s top quarter backs. What do you normally waste on a card? What are you looking to make of it percent wise on a card?

    • @JoshUnboxed824
      @JoshUnboxed824  Před rokem

      When I buy cards to sell, I'm willing to take small profits, no matter at what percentage. The idea for me is to sell in volume and that in turn can lead to larger gains. I sometimes take 5%, 10%, 50%, 300%, etc. Sometimes I even take losses, but at the end of the day it's about building a customer base and taking what I can and continue to use it to grow.
      When go searching for cards, I usually stick to the value bins ($1 mostly), I try not to go too high on prices (greater than $10 most times). Because sometimes I feel that percent ROI is so small most of those cases vs find a card for $1 that you can turn around and sell for $5. I like finding more of those $1 cards and turning that into $5 vs finding a $25 card and turning it into $35. At some point the fees and cost of shipping those higher valued cards just eats at your profit margins.

    Do you sell card lots at all or only singles? And that algorithm is for sure a thing. I sold straight for two years and listed consistently. Started a new job and my listings went down for a few months in a row. I don’t get many views even on promoted listings now. So I am back to listing a few cards a day

    • @JoshUnboxed824
      @JoshUnboxed824  Před rokem +2

      I’ve only been selling singles. I have thought about selling lots here and there, but opted not to. If I were to sell lots it would most likely be for those cards that haven’t sold in a long time. Either that or I’m leaning towards sending those cards to COMC. Haven’t decided yet.

    Is there a reason you don’t use a scanner? I know they aren’t always perfect especially with chrome cards but taking pictures of 20-30 $2-4 cards a day is major time consuming.

    Would you change a personal ebay account to a business account? I have 100% rating on my personal and would like to keep that going instead of creating a new account and starting fresh

    • @JoshUnboxed824
      @JoshUnboxed824  Před rokem +1

      What I ended up doing was just signing up with a ebay store account and changed my username. That way I was able to keep my feedback. I didn't really bother with opening a brand new account, just rebranded my own personal account. It would be tough to start out fresh especially if you've been a registered user for a long time (I've been a user since 2001, so it I didn't really want to start a new account).

    How do you price your cards I’ve had an eBay shop up for 2-3ish months and I’ve only sold 23 cards in the time frame 99% of the 3k listings are 1-5 dollar cards and I list at least 10 a day

    • @JoshUnboxed824
      @JoshUnboxed824  Před rokem

      I usually price my cards based off the previous sales. I'll take an average of what sold and use that as a reference. I'll also look at the current listings and see what's being listed. If I notice that the current listings have been up for quite some time then that tells me the card isn't selling at that price and at that point I'll usually price it lower. I try to stay competitive with my pricing.
      But there will be the case that my cards just don't sell, which tells me that the demand is low and I need to lower the price and possibly take a loss so I can move on. In this case, I learn from these and it helps me when I go out looking for cards to list on my store.
      Sometimes certain cards are slow to sell even at $1.

    How do you all navigate the new tax requirements? I stopped last year because of the new limit of 600 bucks. It seems like alot of work to try and keep track of profit and tax owed especially when selling stuff I had from my childhood. Guess fair market value. But just seemed like it wasn't worth the work to profit ratio. Just looking for some views on ebay when you're a small collector/seller.

    • @JoshUnboxed824
      @JoshUnboxed824  Před rokem

      This is actually my first year going through this and selling low end cards on eBay. I do keep track of my sales, profits, costs of goods sold and expenses and yes, it does require a lot of work. There probably is an easier way to do it all, but I'm kind of learning as I go along as well. Nowadays, it just seems challenging to fund your hobby in other ways aside from setting aside a budget for yourself. And to your point, for most people, it may not seem worth all the work for minimal profit. But I think for me, I really enjoy doing this so it doesn't really seem much like work. Maybe I'll be singing a different tune if sales were to significantly increase.

  • @gsquared.collectibles8392

    Have you run into the problem of selling raw and graded, where you receive questions asking "why haven't you graded this?". I think some buyers assume I already prescreened for grading and wouldn't get a 10 so that's why I'm selling it

    • @JoshUnboxed824
      @JoshUnboxed824  Před rokem +1

      I don’t get that question asked to me at all. And the main reason is because I dont really sell graded cards. I do have 1 listed right now but that’s it. For the past 11 months my store only had raw cards on it. That question was on my mind when I decided to sell raw cards. So I ended up removing all my graded cards from the store and just did strictly raw low end with a few exceptions here and there. Because my store only has raw cards (with just 1 exception at the moment) I don’t get asked that question at all. My customer base is a bunch of collectors who want to just buy low end cards without the thought of getting them graded. They can choose to get them graded if they want as some of the cards I do sell seem to be grade worthy at times.

      Hi Zac, unfortunately I do not really buy bulk cards from viewers. I only work with a very limited budget each week to buy inventory and most times am unable to buy in bulk. I usually buy up to 150 cards each week and this helps me continue to fuel my ebay store.

    • @JoshUnboxed824
      @JoshUnboxed824  Před rokem +1

      Yeah, I do use an eBay store subscription. I have the Basic subscription which gives me 10,000 free fixed price listings in select categories (which includes sports cards) per month and I also get an additional 1,000 free fixed price listings per month. I pay the yearly rate of $21.95/month. I find that this works for me because I list more than 1000 cards per month. You have to take into consideration of not only how many you list per month, but also the number of items that get relisted each month because they don't sell. That is one thing that often gets overlooked.

    In your opinion, should I not waste my time on cards of players less known? Or should I list them anyway?

    • @JoshUnboxed824
      @JoshUnboxed824  Před rokem +1

      I think it depends. When I started out, I stuck to cards of more known players such as stars or hall of famers. I did this as a way to gain some traction with sales and build consistency. Then as I slowly grew y store, I started to add cards of players lesser known. If you do decided to list them, have the understanding that those cards will probably take some time to sell. I prefer to have a balance of lesser known players and stars/hall of famers. I use the stars and hall of famers to help build consistent sales while also listing the lesser known players from time to time to have a nice variety while waiting for the right buyer to come by and buy that card.
