    Kallax shelves are amazing for LP/laserdisc storage. The larger 4 by 4 cube or 5 by 5 cube versions are quite heavy, but they are very well made and each cube can contain between 70 and 80 LP's, so they are essential for any hardcore vinyl collectors.

      I agree with you. Buying those shelving are stupid and a waste of money. I would never stack anything that high. I myself built my own and I call them room dividers. And they are 8 feet long and 13 inches in height. I only stack 2 together with milk cartons of 3 off the ground. One on each end and one in the middle underneath. So that's about 40 inches in height. And those milk cartons can hold the weight easy. And who doesn't like the smell of real wood? Better than those cancer pieces of crap. And I am a vinyl collector and CD collector. Vinyl is my life. Over 3,000 of them. Have over 2,000 CDs. At my last job they were going to throw away all these bookcases (real wood). But I grab them all (9 each). And these cost some bucks. Took me 2 days to haul them in my truck to take home. All my CDs are all put away in those bookcases. In order of course like my vinyl. Thanks for reading my comment (from 976-CRELOEMAN).

    I have over 4000+ albums on a Kalax 4x4(16). One suggestion, place your Kalax(if it's one of the big ones) where the long shelves are horizontal, and the short shelves are vertical. It carries the load better than on the 4 dowels on each side of the shelf. The shelf will work either way, I do it for a little extra peace of mind. I've had a lot of shelves in the past do all sorts of things because of the load of my records(and books). The shelves are short, that's what I like about this shelf design the most.

    I have thousands, so my albums, 12" singles and 7" singles are dated and all are separated by decades, then alphabetically by artists. Library starts with opera & classical, then really begins NEATLY at the 1940s, 1950s, and every decade to August, 2018, so organization for me is essential, and this for me is what works. Shelves, sturdy, wooden, handmade, sized for 7" 10" & 12" ~ Cheers, DAVEDJ ~

    When deciding how best to fit out my new home office, I looked for shelving that would take my vinyl collection and I opted for the Kallax units as they were the least expensive option that would properly accommodate them. A lot of bookshelves aren't deep enough and I don't like having my records sticking out waiting to be bashed into. I got a 2x4 and a 1x4 in the white oak finish, a bit more expensive but worth it as they match the "sit to stand" desk that the lovely company I work for bought for me. A couple of things to note, though:
    1) On the 2x4, the shelf running the length of the unit is actually four separate pieces held at each end by dowels. The shelves along the width are also only held by dowels, but are supported midway by the pieces running the length. In my engineering mind, this makes these pieces the better option for carrying the weight of vinyl, so using it vertically is probably better in the long run. I hope I explained it okay!! I believe the 4x4 and 5x5 models use a similar principle, so get the orientation right or your precious vinyl will be sat on what I would consider the weaker layout.
    2) If you use one that stand 4 or more high, you ABSOLUTELY MUST brace it to the wall - they all come with anti-topple brackets, so use them. I don't care how flat or sturdy your floor is, because sooner or later you'll fall foul of the laws of physics and you're going to find yourself with a big old mess to contend with. And if you stack them, the same principle applies. As for the cool divider layout in the video, brace them to each other so they don't bow apart from each other, like they are in the shots in the video. You have been warned!
    3) I don't know about what you get over in the States, but in the UK you can also buy these in 2x1 and 1x1 versions as well, which are great for building customised layouts in small spaces. And as stated above, brace them to each other if you do.
    Oh, and it's pronounced "kal-axe". Info from my daughter, who used to work at Ikea.

    Walmart has similar units, 2x2 and 2x4, the latter selling for under $110CDN, white or black. What is most important is reinforcement, because plastic dowels in MDF particle board don’t do squat…1x3” plywood works well, and I have used angle rear angle brackets on shelf corners, 2”x3/8” 4-packs with screws from RONA.

    I found it frustrating that the Kallax does not have a back, and my records would slide out the back of the Kallax , and they were not even across the front. That is until I found the following hack - Pool Noodles. Take a Pool Noodle and cut a piece slightly larger than the width of the Kallax cube, then slide the cut noodle to the back of the cube. Now when you put your records in the Kallax they will not slide out the back, and they will be even across the front.

    Hi Jarrett,
    Please add a safety warning to have the Expedit or the newer Kallax mounted to the wall if it is a model that exceeds two levels up! You can find a lot of horror photo's on the net where cabinets that haven't been securely mounted to the wall collapsed due to the weight of the vinyl ("collapsed" is perhaps not the right word but I hope you get the general idea).
    Regards and keep up the good and interesting work!Edwin

    These shelves were truly made for vinyl. I have a 5x5, a 2x4, and (4) 2x2s. I have moved a number of times and I rearrange my music room all the time and they have allowed me to do many different arrangements. If you going out to buy one of these and have a good chunk of records( like 1500+) I would recommend one thing (If I were going back to start all over)...I would have bought ALL 2x2s instead of the 5x5 or 2x4s. Since these shelves all stack so well having 6 2x2s as opposed to 1 5x5 will give you much more flexibility to move things around and make different arrangements as you need to. Maybe at one time you want one huge vinyl wall. At some later point you might want some records here and other over there. Having all 2x2, to me, gives you ore flexibility as you move around and as you rearrange you living room or bedroom. ...AND I'M STILL SHOCKED THAT IKEA HAS NOT COME OUT WITH SOME MECHANISM TO INSERT IN THE SHELF AS A BACK STOP FOR LPS AND BOOKS LOL. To me they are missing the boat. A cheap little plastic bar that would cost them 20 cents to make would be sold for 10 times that for each cubbie.

    With Ikea about 4 miles from me I was very tempted to go with the Kallax. After rethinking about my modest 300+ and very slow growing collection, I went with the lpbin as I prefer flipping thru my stuff. Sure it was about twice the price but it just looks pretty cool.

    WalMart has a "Better Homes & Garden" version of it for 1/3 the price. I have a 2x2 Expedit and it cost almost as much as the Expedit to ship it :(. I also opted for the caster wheel set, makes it really easy to move it around!

    I built a crate a couple years ago that I keep my favourite records in, 13" square to accommodate box sets like the Beethoven symphonies. I keep a lot of other records in a cabinet I built about 15 years ago. Not tryna sound elitist, I'm just a cabinetmaker; it's what I do.

    I'm currently using the better homes & gardens cube storage units, which work great for me so far. I have a 2x8 lying horizontally holding all my gaming system, games and controllers and a 2x2 for record and CD storage only downside if they can be flimsy if more than the weight of items is out on them, as they are not real wood, but if you don't lean or press on them they are great and are cheaper than Ikea. Just don't expect them to last forever.

    If you don't have an IKEA around you can always get something very similar from Target. Cube storage organizer it's called. They don't make them in as many colors though. Mostly black, white, wood grain, gray.

    I use Foremost Open Cube system boxes, each opening is 15x15x15 (slightly larger than the IKEA), and unlike the Kallax, it has a solid back so you don't accidentally push the records out the other side.
    Also (and this was a big selling point for me), you can buy a single cube if you're just starting your record collection and just add cubes as the collection grows.

    2:04 can you stand the 2x4 vertical like that? I know some of those shelves have to go in a certain direction just wondering if these are the same way.
    I know it's a stupid question sense its being displayed like that in the video but you never know.

    I use a shelf unit that's from Target that's mainly used for those square bins for storage, but I noticed it's great for my albums. However my collection is growing rapidly, not too much so, so I'll need an upgrade.That and the top shelf it bowing a bit from the weight of my collection a bit. Thank goodness in the next two ish years I'll get an IKEA near me so I can check these out!

    • @carnell73
      @carnell73 Před 7 lety

      Josh G does your shelf have feet? The new ones from Target do not, and I have not had bowing issues as the shelf lies flat on the floor. IKEA is too far from me, and I think their shipping is astronomical.

    • @PirateNovelist
      @PirateNovelist Před 7 lety

      Carnell Greer my one has no feet either, but it has two sets of the squares so I used to top shelf part and that is what's bowing.

    Just started getting into vinyl records and was looking at getting a Kallax to stick my records and turntable on top of. Coincidentally Ikea just released their Obegransad collection with a variant of the Kallax made specifically for turntables and records, so I getting one of those delivered. Supposedly "limited edition" which is a bit of a shame, but otherwise it seems like it'd be perfect.

    Question... would you suggest 'repairing' album covers? I have several old albums from the 1960s to 1990s, and a few have damage to the spine (rips, fraying). Some are badly ripped and can't hold the record anymore due to the separation. Ideas? Suggestions? Thanks!

  • @MicahS70T5M
    @MicahS70T5M Před 5 lety

    Jarrett, just a suggestion, try to get you loudspeakers off the same table as your TT. The speakers on the same table can hurt sound quality, and cause rumble, which can damage your speakers.
