You probably would have been better off doing a "two-fer" by playing the Van Morrison original first then the Patti Smith version after it to "get the song" first and then hear how Patti kind of deconstructs it.
For a great Patti Smith tune try "BECAUSE THE NIGHT", co-written by Bruce Springsteen and Patti together, and Bruce gave it to Patti and made it her first big hit. It's more of a traditional rock song and she does a great vocal.
She also got a killer version of Bruce Springsteens Because the night. 😎🇧🇻
Time for "Horses"
I love this song, and remember listening to it in the late 70’s.
It was the epitome of cool at the time.
No way, that sucked
She’s so cool it hurts. A complete vibe
Patti Smith. American Poet, High Priestess of Punk!
Because the Night is the only song I remember by Patti Smith. She and Springsteen co-wrote it and she released it as a single.
I didn't know that was her song. The first time I heard it was Natalie Merchant unplugged......she nailed it as a cover!
@@rubrokenYup. Bruce wrote it but decided to not use it for Darkness On The Edge Of Town. He gave it to her instead.
I'll probably go my entire life without being able to decide which of three versions I like best. Might be 10, 000 maniacs.
All time great album
My favorite of hers is Rock and Roll Nig*er, but CZcams wouldn't approve a reaction to it even if a reactor could find a copy of it (there are a few versions, but it takes some searching). Also, Patti explains in the song it has nothing to do with race. It's just a great rocking tune.
Patti is an original who along with her garage rock legend guitarist husband Fred Sonic Smith made spectacular underrated records....
Gloria...Them
i love, love, love, love her! she was one of one! Frederick was my personal favorite of hers.
She still is! Saw her again last year in Germany.
I've never heard this version of this song, but I loved it. I think it rocks!
Ok now you guys gotta hear The Pretenders!! Chrissie Hynde is awesome. ❤
"Brass in Pocket"
"Middle of the Road"
"Stand By Me" written by Bob Dylan.
Maybe the greatest first words on a debut album, "Jesus died from somebody's sins but not mine."
This was one of the earliest punk albums. Came out about the same time as the Ramones, circa 1975. I bought this , and the Ramones in 1976. Both groups helped fire up the latr punk scene in NYC. Part of understanding Patti is her heavy New Joisy acent....Of course there were pre-punks bands like the MC5 and the Stooges who had that drive and energy.
Saw her perform this live, about 12 years ago .
Pure euphoria
Patti Smith was right there at the very beginning of the NY Punk scene. Horses itself was released on November 10, 1975, almost five months before the Ramones debut. And I would like to think Patti Smith's expression of defiance within the initial lyric pissed more than a few people off, particularly religious figures. One of the greatest intros in rock history.
This is a cover of" Gloria" by Van Morrison and the band THEM from Belfast early 1960s .There is a change in lyrics . This song has been covered by many. Try van Morrison's" In To The Mystic" or" These Are The Days".
Probably her biggest hit was Because The Night.
The Doors version is my favorite. So bluesy ❤Peace out guys ✌️ ☮️
I am on a business trip to Brazil today. When I am back 10 days from now, I might request another Patti song, choosing more carefully a live version of one of her songs. ❤
Also be sure to add her cover of Bruce Springsteens "Because The Night". 👍👍
Some would say one of the originators of Punk is Fred “Sonic” Smith. Fred married Patti(both born Smith).and Patti left the NYC artsy circle and moved to suburban Detroit, and opened a clothing store. After Fred passed, Patti returned to NYC. I know I am discounting some influential, sixtiesgarage bands, but the MC5 arguably started something with Kick out the Jams. Or your could go with the Stooges 1969 or TV Eye. Between Seger, Alice, the Stooges, and the MC5 Detroit was rockin in the sixties along with Motown of course
Other great songs by her are Frederick, Redondo Beach, Pissing in a river, Dancing Barefoot and many more.
I saw her live in the 70s in a place called Max's Kansas City in lower Manhattan in NYC. I always loved her voice. Check out the test of her Horses album. Rodondo Beach us one of my favorites.
Patti is (still) awesome. Don't miss to hear "Free Money".
I have met and spoken with her several times through the years. Totally unassuming and very reserved. Prefers not to be recognized or engaged but she is an iconic performer and good people too
At times She was crazy live. Great song that needs lyrics! Lol
The Poet Punk Godess....
That sucked, she's awful
You shoud check ROCKPALAST live version.
Patti Smith's cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is equally transformative, and transcendent.
Before punk was punk!
Good to see you're expanding your horizons. Hahaha 👍
Maybe you could start with post punk land work your way backwards to punk. That might be a good way to do it, it's just so interesting, I was just around when it unfolded so there's no way for me to not know it.
Punk Rules!
Most people who heard this when it came out in 1975 were familiar with the song, either as performed by Van Morrison's band Them or by a million U.S. garage bands in the 60s, when it was a popular cover song. But Patti's version is unique.
F-I-R-E!
If you're looking for punk from the 70s do Ramones. They're often cited as the first true punk band and are known for helping establish the punk movement in the United States and elsewhere and are seen today as highly influential in punk culture. Fun fact: Ramones got their name from Paul McCartney, who would check into hotels under the alias Paul Ramon. All members adopted pseudonyms ending with the surname Ramone, although none were biologically related.
Im a big Van Morrison fan and a Doors fan. Go back and listen to their versions then come back to this. Trust me,.. you will like this one more than you do now because the story set the tone.
The words I use to describe Patti would be, beatnik, punk.
You've got to listen to Free Money off the Horses album.
Gloria = Van Morrison ( Them ) . Jimi Hendrix also did a version, have both Van The Mans and Jimis versions up in my vinyl collection And ofc this version on LP. 😎🇧🇻😈 Saw Patti Smith first time on tv Rockpalast germany consert back in 77 or 78.
The Doors Gloria {Dirty Version)
If you want to hear her big hit, listen to "Because the Night", or if you want to hear why she's the "poet punk laureate" try almost anything else e.g. "Piss Factory" Most of her songs will be offensive to some people.
AWWWE you guys are very polite! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE 💓💕 EVERYTHING on the Easter album but according to my feelings I think I hate this song. Ya the Easter album is SOOO Freaking Awesome I would hold it up to any album today or since ⁉️⁉️🕊️☮️
Also my favorite and I love Waves as well.
Agree - A true work of art, spiritually moving and beautiful.
@@rebekahyoungman3537 Nice to know there are still fans. Thank You for the reply!! 🕊️☮️
@@allengray5748 Moment after hitting "enter" I realized I'd been thinking of her album "WAVE" too... as a favorite - certainly EASTER is related. Keep up the good work, Professor . Take care, RY
@@rebekahyoungman3537Just a back row audience member. Never heard of the album WAVE! Use to body surf them growing up on Oahu! Got me curious now! ☮️
Neat pick Frank but personally BECAUSE THE NIGHT is the best intro for the normal folk from the AWESOME album EASTER!! Every song on there is great like SPACE MONKEY!! YES!! I call a redo! Calling All Patreon ---- BECAUSE THE NIGHT ‼️ Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
I was thinking about requesting it, but then I wanted to be a bit more provocative for a start. PEACE ❤❤❤
Because the Night was written by Bruce Springsteen so it doesn’t show her writing ability. There are many tunes that she or wrote with Lenny Kaye. Smith is also a renowned poet.
@@jimglenn6972And although Gloria is by Van Morrison, she created a new song by changing it.
@@jimglenn6972 Yes I know all about the song and the 10,000 Maniacs version but Patti's Interpretation IS PATTI SMITH would you not agree?? And EVERY song on that album so I wasn't about to exclude the one that made her famous ☮️
@@frankbrozowski8808 Just now seeing this. You must be THE Frank!! Nice. Ya when introducing stuff to normal people (as I know I'm not) you start with the Ear Candy. Like David Bowie. I would start with CHANGES (lyrics with all Bowie) and then YOUNG AMERICAN, GOLDEN YEARS, FAME, etc. It's all good my Man! ☮️
It’s about getting it on with Gloria.
my most favourite bruce springsteen song is "because the night" by patti smith, though patti did co-write the song - an absolute BANGER
Someday somewhere somebody hopefully might react to the Doors version of Gloria.....
Many bands covered GLORIA but I love The Doors version the most
Nice one ☘️🇺🇲
If you want to hear the original it's by Then featuring Van Morrison.
Them
@@kbrewski1 sorry, that's what I meant. 😮
I know it's a remake but I actually like the Shadows of the Knight version better
When all the music starts to sound the same there is Patti Smith! I love half of her songs and hate half of her songs, in fact they are my most beloved songs so please give her more than one chance! A more popular song is "Because the night" czcams.com/video/c_BcivBprM0/video.htmlsi=rmdtSNpaAX25nBuD or Frederick czcams.com/video/a-befOtn9GQ/video.htmlsi=UNq6NgeO-CLFTQc6
Van Morrison's version is really good.
First one here!🤘
Gloria... THEM : Van Morrison
You guys have done Band-Maid and BabyMetal. Check out the Queens of Metal - Lovebites
Recommend to start with Lovebites - Shadowmaker (Music Video) The Wolfpack will arrive when you do.
Yeah, she was trying to mimic Van.
I also recommend you react to ( Laura Branigan - Gloria (Official Music Video)
What about Handel's Gloria?
The Doors did a great version of this song.
That's hilarious, Sam got it but you didn't really. The fact that you don't understand Punk is something that you need to address because it influenced so much music that you do like after that. You really got to understand how that happened. Patti Smith was fucking revered
FOR ME THE BEST SONG IS SPACE MONKEY
Okay, equal time for Laura Branigan singing "Gloria". (Not the same "Gloria", but too good!)
lol that’s what I was expecting for some reason 😜
Sorry, that's what I meant. 😮
Nothing touched the female led Pretenders debut punk/pop/new wave album in '79. Considered one of the best of all time debut albums and with good reason. You should review any song from that album. Iconic and Rock N Roll Hall of Fame band with good reason.
William singe touch
Do you have any Jeff Buckley reactions planned?
Taylor Swift just honored Patti in Tortured Poets....
I really dug Because the Night by her. This didn't do it for me it's a cover song . Actually other individuals did it better. Keeping it real
Okay kids...! enough of the "punk"! Now..., how about something really cool?! George Benson / "Broadway"...! 👍
lol what a place to pause it 🤦🏻♂️
Because the night and rock and roll N****r. Are two other great songs by her.
Ok that sucked
These fools know nothing. And they film themselves. It's mind boggling.
