And attracting crowds of around 100,000 night after night . Youngest band member is Ron Wood age 74 . And audience ages range from 7 and 8 year olds to great grandparents in their 70's upward . Also Paul Mc Cartney and Ringo Starr - the remaining Beatles are still touring . Both are over 80 and drawing equally large crowds as the Stones. Both Beatles and Stones have been around since 1962.

One of the few bands from the 60s and 70s who managed to stay wealthy. Mick was a business Major, and had the band invest 1/2 of the money they made from being in the band. Not to be touched. So unlike so many others, they didn't spend it all on frivolous stuff and Drugs.

This is a song about a man mourning the unexpected death of his girlfriend, his mood is so dark he doesn't want to see any bright colors. "I see the girls walk by Dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head Until my darkness goes" - when he sees the young girls dressed up, it reminds him of his girlfriend whom he has lost. "I see a line of cars And they're all painted black With flowers and my love Both never to come back" - the black cars are limousines waiting to go to the girl's funeral, one of the cars is a hearse with her casket inside with flowers on the top. "I've seen people turn their heads And quickly look away Like a newborn baby It just happens everyday" Even though it happens every day just like babies being born every day, people turn their heads when they see a funeral go by.

I think anyone who has lost someone extremely dear to them or experienced some horrific circumstance that changes the way they see the world, can relate to the sentiment of this song at some point in their healing process. It’s hard to see the world cheerfully and oblivious going on around you, while your whole world falls apart.
I said elsewhere in a reply that because I first knew this song as the opening to a tv show about the Vietnam war, I always interpreted it as though it was about a soldier returning from war and having a hard time adjusting to their old life, perhaps suffering from the effects of PTSD.
Surprised to not see Beast of Burden and You Can’t Always Get What You Want mentioned in the comments - two of my absolute favourite Stones songs.
Those two in addition to Paint it Black, Gimme Shelter, and Angie (which I have seen mentioned) - are all worthwhile listens for those new to the group.

The British people were MASSIVELY inspired by Black American music, mainly Blues, but also Jazz. They were far behind us, but they reinterpreted it in really interesting ways. What I find so cool about music is how a style can bounce back and forth from different cultures, growing each time it bounces. The exact same thing happened to Techno, which originated in Black Detroit and Chicago. The Brits put a big spin on it, bounced it back, but by that time Americans were more interested in Rap and Hip-Hop, which the Brits also had a response to.

We weren’t ‘far behind’ you. It’s not about being behind. We had our own music genres. We’re on a separate continent with a very large ocean in between. There’s no reason why blues would’ve organically emerged in the U.K. when it had its roots in African folk music and is specific to that culture. Our music artists could only adapt it and reinterpret it once they had been exposed to it, which happened in the first half of the 20th century. And when you say ‘us’, that’s a bit misleading because mainstream white America took no notice of blues until the British bands popularised it. You even had separate ‘black’ and ‘white’ radio stations, something we’ve never had.

This is written from the viewpoint of a person who is depressed; he wants everything to turn black to match his mood. There was no specific inspiration for the lyrics. When asked at the time why he wrote a song about death, Mick Jagger replied: "I don't know. It's been done before. It's not an original thought by any means. It all depends on how you do it."
The song seems to be about a lover who died:
"I see a line of cars and they're all painted black" - The hearse and limos.
"With flowers and my love both never to come back" - The flowers from the funeral and her in the hearse. He talks about his heart being black because of his loss.
"I could not foresee this thing happening to you" - It was an unexpected and sudden death.
"If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes" - This refers to her in Heaven.
