The crowd cheering at the end is not a dramatic effect - the entire Running on Empty album was recorded live, he was writing the songs on tour and then performing them. The versions are all from different shows during the tour. Jackson Browne is a brilliant songwriter with a gorgeous voice. He is close with all the Laurel Canyon musicians - Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, Joni Mitchell, the Eagles. The Eagles song "Take It Easy" was written by Jackson Browne, but he only had the first verse and the chorus. He was stuck there, so he gave it to his friend, Glen Frey, who added the second and third verses and made the song into a huge hit from the Eagles' eponymously titled first album.
I noticed on the rooming list, there is actually a recording room 😮
The recorded one on the bus.
Don't forget Linda Ronstadt.
They recorded a couple of songs on the album (The Road and Cocaine) in hotel rooms.
@@artgentile5776 Yes, and also J.D. Souther
Play "The Load Out/Stay", and "The Pretender "
BOTH SO GOOD for ME!! 👍
I love The Load Out
"These Days" and "Doctor my Eyes" are great ones too.
That motel list was giving props to those he toured with. "The Load Out/Stay" is a salute to his roadies.
Came here to suggest this song!
Yes, please!! 😊
This. Thank you. 😚
Hoping Phil/Sam check this comment. Load Out/Stay is the combination song Phil was talking about at the end of the video. Every other comment on this video is suggesting it, and it is CRIMINAL that it does not get more airplay on the radio than it does.
Nothing more annoying than when they don't play Stay at the end. @@cassianfalkener3706
"First time we're doing a Jackson Browne, we've never done him before..." Boy, are you in for a treat!
60's and 70's best EVER era of music and songwriting. Since then...nothing comes close...PERIOD.
Iagree😊
C'mon now...I hit my mid teens in the early 80's and "prefer" a lot of music from that time. HOWEVER, I love classic rock from the 70s, British Invasion v1.0 from the 60s, early rock from the 50s, Big Band from the 40's...Heck I love ragtime and Sousa marches.
But... I also like grunge and some of the indy-alt stuff from the 90s. Some nu-metal from the 00s.
Not to mention metal from the 70s-90s.
Even a smidge of country (mostly 70s) and some rap/hip-hop.
All that to say that there are wonderful styles of music, and acts, from pretty much any decade (except for maybe the 30s. I can't find much compelling, personally, from that decade.)
I've been a long haul trucker for 28 years. Over 3.5 million miles driven!! This song is an anthem for me!!
Live version of “Stay”, “Somebody’s Baby”, “Lawyers in Love”, “Doctor my Eyes”, “The Pretender”, “These days”, “Take it Easy”….
Dude, there is no studio version of "Stay". It's always been a concert song for Jackson, a cover of a classic.
Black and White
ALL GO GOOD!
THE ENTIRE SONG AND ALBUM WAS RECORDED LIVE, NO FAKE SHIT OR AUTO-TUNE BACK THEN !! REAL MUSIC !!!
Every time I see a picture of David Lindley I get teary. What a fabulous lap steel player. Jackson's the Load Out/Stay is an essential and David's brilliant on it.
Jackson and David..'Call it a loan'
I turned 12 in 1970 and this was the greatest ERA for music and grew up with it all.
Dr. My Eyes.
One of his best.
Yeah Grew up with that on the radio
He penned that when he was 16
The "Load out/Stay" live version is a must!!
This was song was recorded live, in concert. The applause at the end was not dubbed.
The Load Out/Stay -live-should be next
When I was a kid, I had never heard of Jackson Browne. Then I listened to an interview with Bob Seger and they asked him who he listens to and he said Jackson Browne.
No Auto-Tune. No laptops. No pretensions. They don't make music like this anymore
When I first heard this song (circa 1978) I never once thought it had anything to do with being 'on the road' with a band. I always thought it was about a man looking back on his life, and seeing that he NEVER knew where he was going, and when he looked around at those who used to give him strength (direction) he finally came to realize that even they honestly did not know where they were going to end up.
You MUST DO THE CONCERT VIDEO OF “The Load Out/Stay” ( the combination) You will LOVE it! 🥰 😊
That's crazy that you've never heard of Jackson Browne and you live on this Earth. He's an amazing singer-songwriter that started out writing for other performers and then decided to keep some of this stuff for himself to sing.
I find it very strange that you would never have heard of them but that happens.
Load out/ Stay live is fantastic! Growing up in the 70s was everything, especially music.
Doctor, my eyes is fantastic and also his tribute to road crews and fans that make live concerts possible in
“the loadout/stay”
He wrote that when he was 16!
I would concur that "The Load Out/Stay" "Doctor My Eyes" and "Lawyers in Love" are some of my favorite songs of his.
Load Out/Stay is my absolute favorite!! The life of a performer...living for the crowd and the music!🎉❤
The load out/ stay... a must hear..
A song written for the roadies and fans. Great reaction as always. Thank you. 😊
Jackson Browne is an outstanding musician, singer, songwriter. Running on Empty is one of my favorite songs by Jackson. It was used in the movie Running on Empty, which is based on a true story of a couple who are fleeing authorities due to their anti war activities. It’s actually a pretty good movie. The other song by Jackson is the Load Out, written about the many people who set up and take down equipment etc for concerts. So glad you’re reacting to Jackson Browne. You will want to do more. Thank you. 👏👏🇨🇦
The Load Out/Stay is one of my favorite JB songs.
This song, from his album of the same name, was released in 1977, and was his first work since he was devastated by his wife's suicide the previous year. He has stated that this song was partially inspired by his memory of her, and since her death he'd felt that he was 'running on empty' and without purpose.
I was 16 in 77, and I wore out 2LPs, and an 8-Track of this album.
Jackson Browne is one is the best singer-songwriters of the 20th century. "These Days" is my favorite, but he's got dozens of great tunes. Can't go wrong.
He wrote "These Days" when he was just 16 years old! That's genius. Pure genius.
Just a wonderful tune. Many of his songs played on his acoustic album are superb as well.
JB has an enormous amazing catalog - but if you look through the comments you'll see one song repeated again & again - Load Out/Stay. You both will LOVE it!!!!
As a side note, I saw just saw Jackson Browne & James Taylor headline a concert two years ago at Saratoga and they were awesome together, often covering each other's songs - and eventually hitting the stage at the same time!!!
He was an army brat born in Germany, and is one of the great singer/songwriters of the era. And the thing about music is that it bonds with the memories of when you first heard it. I associate the music of my youth with those times & memories, so it will always have a special place in my heart. But in the case of the ‘60’s & ‘70’s, I was fortunate to have grown up with the best as well. Love your reviews.✌️❤️🎶
The load out/Stay is a must❤
Yes oh yes!! Never enough of Jackson Browne!! 😊
Jackson Browne has been in my top 5 artist since the 70's
I saw Jackson opening for Linda Rondstadt back in the seventies. Beautiful show.
No one can match the great David Lindly on slide RIP
Mercury Blues.
I named my best friend Jackson Brown. He was a chocolate Lab who stood by me for over 10 years. He's chillin' with the Lord. He was equally as cool as Jackson Browne, the man. Great channel. Thanks for all you do.
That's cool! When I was 14 and riding my bike back home from high school I had a dog run up and bite me... The owners were screaming, "Jackson Browne, get back here." ( I don't think he was a lab)
well I know it wasn't MY lab ... he only would have bit you if you were covered in gravy.@@realmcaz
@@bobtedeman5975 Oh my gosh, that's too funny! 😄
May suggesting The Load Out/Stay It is a classic about life on the road Be sure to do both together. Because there are some videos of them being done separately . They are meant to be played together.
One of the best singer/songwriters of the 70's/80's/up til now. Jackson Browne is worth a deep dive. Songs like 'The Pretender', 'For A Dancer', 'Before The Deluge', 'Song For Adam', 'Looking Into You', 'Fountain Of Sorrow', 'Your Bright Baby Blues', 'These Days' and many, many more are so great... Thanks for the reaction!
Banger is right❣️ Jackson Browne is a great talent indeed. I love this song so much. I still remember all the lyrics, too. Other songs I'd recommend: "The Load Out/Stay" (two separate songs combined) Also, " The Pretender" "Somebody's Baby" just to name a few. I never knew he was born in Germany, so thanks, Sam, for that info. ❤
Its everyones favorite era of music,,,, the 70's
OMG....! This album is a masterpiece that you must own...
The 70s has the best music in my opinion. They also sing Somebody's Baby which is fire
Easily Jackson's weakest song.
I'd say the two songs that made his career were "Doctor My Eyes" and "Take It Easy." There's other hits by him to listen to, but those would be the top two that drew attention to him and made him a star.
The Loadout and Stay. Don’t miss it
Hey Boomers! They don't know what a photo album is. Young Whipper Snappers 👨🏿🦳👩🦳🧑🏻🦳👵🏼
“ Take it easy “ Original by Jackson Browne . Covered by the Eagles #1 Hit
I spent some time with Jackson Brown in his studio in Santa Monica, California. He was very open and easy to talk to, and gave me advice on how to navigate the pitfalls of dealing with record companies.
He played me some songs from a new album that he was working on at the time. One in particular was called Too Many Angels.
He also gave me a glimpse into his writing process and played me some ideas from a cassette player he used to make sure he didn’t forget his ideas.
I wonder if he still has that cassette player? I still have mine.
Please do a reaction on Doctor My Eyes which is one of his two top 10 hits. Believe it or not he never had a number one which really surprises me because he’s the real deal. 🕊❤️🎼
This entire album is just one great song after another!! All about the road.
That's one of the things that made the 70's music so good -- they were all incorporating different genres into their own sound. And there was an insane amount of talented people who created an insane variety of great music.
The song, and that whole album, was recorded live. Mostly on stage, but also from hotel rooms and their tour bus. First time an artist did a live album of all new songs. Can't go wrong with Jackson - he's got dozens of great songs. Try The Pretender and/or Doctor My Eyes next, both of which were big hits.
Actually, Neil Young did. Time Fades Away in 1973. All new songs recorded live.
@@brotherrandyll4093 I stand corrected! Should have known that too!
Yes, Phil, the 70's are filled with tons of great music and bands. Some bands you are yet to discover. Having 45 years of music experience I consider the 70's for the most part the rock decade and the 80 the metal decade. This song "Running On Empty" is a popular metaphor for being exhausted, but the phrase had a much more literal meaning for Browne when it came to him. Browne wrote it while he was driving back and forth to the studio each day to make his album The Pretender. He told Rolling Stone: "I was always driving around with no gas in the car, I just never bothered to fill up the tank because - how far was it anyway? Just a few blocks."
Jackson is a fabulous singer/songwriter. He has so many great songs. He also helped launch the careers of so many notable artists including Stevie Ray Vaughan. The Load Out/Stay and Before The Deluge are two of my favorites of his. Bruce Springsteen gave the Rock & Roll induction speech for Jackson, it was one of the coolest I have heard. Very fitting for Jackson!
‘60s and ‘70s had best music filled with people with talent. ❤
I'm with you, Phil. I was born in 1965 and grew up on so much 70s music. The greatest era of all for great tunes!
If you can drive and not crank this up, you’re from another planet.
Shout out to the amazing band that helped make this a classic song:
Rosemary Butler and Doug Haywood on backing vocals
Danny Kortchmar - guitar
David Lindley - lap steel guitar
Craig Doerge - piano
Leland Sklar - bass guitar
Russ Kunkel - drums
These are all legendary session musicians who have recorded on literally thousands of albums with the biggest artists in music
Leland Sklar is another legend
Journey - Faithfully
“Doctor my eyes” … great song.
Whole album recorded live on the road
Jackson Browne has a lot of songs I like but Before the Deluge is probably my favorite if I had to choose one.
The Load Out/Stay are also terrific.
The entire Running On Empty album is FANTASTIC! I used to smeak into my sister's room and listen to it.
This song was a great set up for "The Load Out/Stay"! Listening to one without the other's is like listening to half a set! :)
One of the great poets of American music . His songs have been covered by everyone. Late For The Sky is my favorite JB song. Joan Baez does a great version of Fountain of Sorrow
Jackson Browne was a good friend of some of the Eagles, especially Glenn Frey. He actually started writing “Take It Easy” but could never finish it so Frey finished it for him and it became one of the Eagles greatest hits.
Yeah, in 65 I was 17, playing High School Football. In 69, I was 21 in the Army, getting ready to go to Vietnam. Seems like a couple of years ago. Turn 76 next week.
Definitely get deeper into his catalog he's associated with a lot of the greats. The whole Troubadour crowd, including JD Souther and Linda Ronstadt, he was Gregg Allman's roommate for a time, toured on the no nukes tour with Bonnie raitt, Crosby stills Nash and Bruce Springsteen plus many others. Still performs and has had an illustrious carrier.
Jackson Browne is legend. I saw him in concert with James Taylor last year and he still sounds amazing.
A lot of people have covered Jackson Browne's music. He's written hits for a lot of people. I recommend Mr.Bo Jangles, or Dr. My Eyes as future tunes.
Musical genius and legend
You are right! Channel wouldn't be where it is without Sam!
This is his signature song but The Pretender, The Load Out/Stay, Somebody's Baby, Lawyers In Love and Doctor My Eyes are just a few of his other biggies.
Jackson co-wrote “Take It Easy” with Glenn Frey of the Eagles, and it became the Eagles first hit. Jackson recorded it too.
Do more Jackson Brown . Long lives the 70s.
I remember back in 1979 while at university, this song was blaring all over the campus, advertising a blood donor drive. Pretty affective.
We all love Sam ❤
Another good late 70s/early 80s band is Shooting Star. Their Hang on for Your Life album had 5 songs that got radio play at that time. "Hollywood", "Breakout", " Flesh and Blood" which has a great violin solo, "Are You on My Side" and "Hang on for Your Life". This has been one of my all time favorite albums. Check it out.
Great song awesome reaction! I always get a Bruce Springsteen (The Boss) vibe from this song. In the early years Jackson Brown did some collaborations with Glenn Frey (RIP) of The Eagles and Gregg Allman (RIP) of The Allman Brothers Band. I love "Doctor My Eyes" and "The Pretender" two classic songs like this one.
Jackson Browne started his career writing songs for other artists such as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (he was briefly a member in 1966) & the Eagles (Browne co-wrote "Take It Easy"). But in the 70's he started recording his own songs. He had a lot of hits 70's-80's such as "The Load Out/Stay", "Doctor, My Eyes", "Rock Me On The Water", "Here Come Those Tears Again", "The Pretender", "Somebody's Baby", "Tender Is The Night" etc.
Ha, it's totally live, and this is such a classic song. To really hear one of his major statements about the rigors and also joys of touring as a major 70s act, and it was also a huge hit and it is just so much fun, check out "The Load Out / Stay". You'll love it.
It was a live song. It was from his live album recorded at Meriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, maryland. Browne wrote the song while driving to the studio each day to make The Pretender, according to Rolling Stone magazine: "I was always driving around with no gas in the car," Browne is quoted. "I just never bothered to fill up the tank because - how far was it anyway? Just a few blocks."[4]
West Coast rocker. Good friends with the Eagles and he wrote their 1st bit hit, Take it Easy. Linda Ronstadt was also part of that clique.
@@kurtsaxton823 Before they were the Eagles. Don't remember what they called themselves.
@@kurtsaxton823 You're right. I must have read a fake story. He did play with the Beach Boys touring. I read he had played with at least 2 members of the band. My Bad.
@@chrisjamieson3452 yeah it was definitely a fake story The Eagles were formed because Don Henley and Glenn Frey were part of Linda Ronstadt's touring band they roomed together and after the tour they decided that they could do this and with the help of Linda Ronstadt and JD Souther her boyfriend at the time, started Eagles.
he used to have concerts to support a school in Sedona Az. every year, saw many great up and coming band at his shows, saw him get booed off the stage one year trying to announce the act that was coming up after Keb Mo... EVERYBODY wanted Keb Mo to do some more, he is not only a great songwriter and entertainer but the good his benefit concerts supported and the new bands that got recognition was amazing. Red Necked Friend and The Pretender are some of his lost masterpieces. thank you. oh ya, he did a lot with Warren Zevon, somebody else I would love to see you react to, his songs can be a lil... eye opening though... you forgot to mention that he was born in Germany because his father was stationed at an American military base there. again, thank you. have a great day!
This is classic greatness and also check out "Dr my eyes" and "somebody's baby". Those are also bangers by JB.
All the fantastic folk rock and prog rock and orchestral rock in the 70's, and what defines the decade? Disco. What I like about Jackson Browne's lyrics is that he can carry a metaphor throughout the song. "I don't know when that road turned into the road I'm on." No mixed messages. My favorite song of his is "In the Shape Of A Heart."
This song cuts deep like few others. It has stayed with me since I first heard it about 25 years ago. Jackson Browne is a treasure, and will always be.
Yay, gotta love those seventies bands.
Cheers 🍺
Jackson Browne is definitely great! Glad you are checking him out!!❤❤
Thanks for giving him a chance!!❤❤
The Load Out/Stay was another song about being on the road and performing.
Doctor my eyes! In the shape of a heart!
There's a video of this song performed live, circa 1978, showing just how much fun everyone has while performing.
Another great is "Tender is the Night"!!! Also, are you ever going to look into Trace Adkins?? So many super great songs.
Jackson Browne is brilliant! Everything from thoughtful lyrics to his delivery of a song and the band also it's all A+! Keep digging and you will feel the same! Thank you for this
One of the all-time great wordsmiths!!
Some other great songs are "That Girl Could Sing", " Boulevard", "Tender Is The Night", "Doctor My Eyes", "For A Rocker", "Lawyers In Love".
This is one of the very few artists I have alluded to previously where live performances are concerned. Jackson Browne is a genius. A lot of what you hear on some of his best work was recorded on his tour bus. One of the most unique artists because live is how he worked. Here is a tidbit of trivia. He was roommates with Glen Frey before the Eagles and gave him one of the Eagles early hits, Take It Easy. His catalog is extensive. You won’t run out of masterpieces any time soon. Before you get caught up in the popular songs and well known hits, I hope you’ll take a little time to listen to 2 songs that aren’t hits, but showcase ability to connect with an audience and really touch the heart. Those songs are Love Needs A Heart and That Girl Could Sing. After that, Boulevard, Somebody’s Baby, Lawyers In Love, The Loadout/Stay and many others. Much Love ❤️
Love you guys. Your smart, the 70s is the best. I was a teenager and it was wild and music was diverse. I met Jackson in the back alley of 5th and Broadway in Downtown LA in 1983. He lowered me down a signature from the 3rd floor window of the building his was practing at. Doctor my eyes is his best work ever.
To me, top 5 greatest rock song of all time.
Good thing for me about 70s music is…I was a kid so many songs like this takes me right back to single digits when I didn’t have a worry in the world, running into the 🌞
In the 70s in Central Illinois, it was REO Speedwagon country, check them out.
Early in the song Jackson says in "65 I was17". This lyric is epic to those like me who were also 17 in1965 as the Vietnam war raged and we faced the draft...
LoadOut/Stay, Doctor My Eyes, and the best song ever we written about the working class, The Pretender. The lyrics are the key to enjoying Jackson.
The perfect compliment to this song (this recording IS live!) is "The Load Out/Stay" - also live from this album - and it's absolutely about being on tour and is essentially a thank you to the roadies and the fans. This is what you were referring to at the end of your commentary and it's amazing.
