When designing urban spaces, city planners have many competing interests to balance. After all, cities are some of the most diverse places on the planet. They need to be built for a variety of needs.
In recent years, these competing interests have surfaced conflict over an unlikely interest: purposefully uncomfortable benches.
Enter the New York City MTA. They’ve installed 'leaning bars’ to supplement traditional benches & save platform space. But designs like this carry an often invisible cost: they rob citizens of hospitable public space. And the people who experience this cost most directly are those experiencing homelessness.
    A few notes of thanks:
First to Historian A. Roger Ekirch who kindly got me up to speed on the expansion of streetlights in historic western city districts.
Another thanks goes to author Veronica Harnish, who outlined some of the pitfalls that people experiencing homelessness face when choosing between sleeping rough or utilizing emergency shelters. You can read her blog here: car-living.blogspot.com/
A third thank you goes to the staff at the Unites States Interagency Council on Homelessness - they supplied the map in this video, as well as some aggregate statistics of the United States homeless population. Those numbers come from a variety of annual ‘Point-In-Time’ counts. The 2018 event will take place in late January, and the process depends on volunteers - so if you'd like to participate, you can find your local organizer here: www.hudexchange.info/grantees...#granteeSearch

Exactly. I can see the arms on benches being used, but people need a place to sit & rest. I have an old hip replacement & my other hip is getting arthritis after walking awhile & sitting for at least 5 - 10 minutes helps to get me moving again. And I'm sure alot of other people who can still get around, yet have physical issues, need benches to rest as well.

While he was homeless he said he met a lot of intelligent and interesting people. A majority of whom were addicts of some kind. While others were considered outcasts in society or some who grew tired of living in society and following its norms. I remember one story where he told me that he met a surgeon who gave up his profession because he grew tired of taking part in societies monetary values and materials so decided to become homeless and was happier with the simple lifestyle. While others were like him - kicked out of the house at a young age and had been homeless from a younger age never really getting back into the swing of things. Attacking the problem from both sides by helping people get out of homelessness and discouraging people from being homeless (it's common among a lot of welfare takers)who interfere with public property, taking property meant to be given to everyone as something they "own," is important.
So rather than complaining about a "mean" environment, you can help the quicken the declining homeless rate already in place. Again, how will you help the homeless problem by being against the deterring structures?

People here carry the title of Christian but not the character. We need a revival in this country. It's ridiculous and homelessness in Hawaii is a massive epidemic now. Not to mention the cost of living is outrageous here and that's taking a toll on locals and making them homeless here too. It's sad to see this increase in homelessness over the years.

I like the sheer amount of dedication and thorough planning a group of people must spend in order to make another group of people as miserable and insignificant as possible when they have literally limitless ways to address the problem.
Like , think about it, a city could put a group of people in charge of urban planning with the homeless problem and they allow them to do whatever they like to solve the problem and keep public spaces as beautiful as possible but the first thing they do is anything they can design to stigmatize them even more.

  • @tanelihotanen3394
    @tanelihotanen3394 Před 3 lety +1

Here in Finland we actually build the public space for the homeless. No armrests or dividers on benches. You even get to rest on a bench that is tilted backwards a little bit so you don't fall on the ground from the bench. Inside spaces like shopping malls even provide free power outlets for use, and free toilets are everywhere. You get to use them as you wish, if you don't disturb other people. If you make noise or smell very bad, guards come and tell you to leave. This only happens with the inside public space. Outside you can do whatever you want. Sleeping in the inside is generally not possible in The inside public spaces like malls or libraries but you can rest and no one questions your needs or tells you to buy something for and example. But Winters are long and cold for The homeless anyway. Warm country, cold climate.

My disabilities means that my joints get sore if I'm standing for too long. It means that I get tired easily. So errands are already pretty difficult for me, just because of the having to be up and walking for so long. Without proper benches I can take a break on if I need it.... I'd be even _more_ stuck at home. It's bad enough on rainy days, because all of the benches are soaked, making them unusable.
Honestly that leaning bar is ridiculous. Wtf is the point of that?? People can already lean on the wall if they want to!! Also like... it assumes everyone is a certain height. What about short people? What about tall people?? It removes wall leaning space from them while being unusable for them because they can't reach it or they'd have to bend down awkwardly in a position that's more of a work out than a rest. What a waste of money.

Calm down and let people live and provide a seat!!!

At work site I even got my own foldable deck chair for short naps during break hour. In the end public space is just a convenience that is never enough for others....we just have to make ourselves comfortable.
Imagine sitting on a deck chair leaning back and chill out while waiting for the intercity train....I even plan to buy a wheelchair with a motor engine and use walking stick when I'm retired. Not disabled but when you are old, walking stick and wheelchair makes shopping really fun and very comfortable.
Hey not abusing people kindness....I have onset of early arthritis. Comfort will make me stay healthy till my old age. Sort of a way to prevent disability. Is that a crime?

So apparently having no place to go is "crime"

Thizz Fox If i break into your house and sleep on your couch, because im homeless, my crime is not that i dont have anywhere to go, my crime is that i am trespassing. Stop strawmanning people, its dishonest and cowardly.

Yes. The criminalization of poverty is a real phenomenon. And it's shameful.

Katt1N you really strawman his argument. If a person does not have a place to sleep, should they now be put in prison for not having a place to sleep? If you've your example suddenly became homeless, would you want to be put in prison because the government doesn't want you to be in a public space, that's public

Augustine Daudud There's a difference between being homeless is committing a crime and the city trying to prevent homeless people from sleeping on their benches.
Homeless people don't pay taxes so why should they benefit from government funded seating?

They literally have normal bench in the 10 ft. distance in one the shots, so not a biggest problem on that account.

No offense. But if you have a leg issue where you need to sit for a while, you most likely wont be walking all around.

Zanybandz Yeah, it's not like circumstances completely outside of your control can force you to go out on your two(?) when you're hurt or have some serious leg condition despite your best efforts to avoid it.
      That's just nonsense! ;p

I live in Rome and the introduction of these benches has been slow, but the few that have been replaced with these are a nightmare. Public transport here entails such long wait times, so now I have to wait half an hour for the train while on my feet before waiting another eternity for the bus, where there never were any benches to begin with. In my experience there was never a big problem here with homeless people sleeping on these benches during actual business hours, they used them mainly when no one else was around to need them. Now they are forced to sleep on the floor. Doesn't make the city safer and definitely does not solve the homeless problem.

I’ve seen some of these in Nashville, it’s kinda funny how uncomfortable they are whenever you’re simply trying to sit down on it, might aswell just make a normal bench

the "Leaning bars" also say to disabled people who can't stand for long periods of time "You aren't welcome here". Same for seniors.
