- Hi, in this tea break fix we have a 1975-1977 Casio pocket calculator that has no power. It was sent to me by a viewer called Gordon. It has had battery leakage, and even though it has been cleaned up, it is still not working.
Link to the unofficial Facebook My Mate Vince Fan Club (right now this is the only one 🤣) groups/17476...
I now have a PO box here in the UK, so if you would like to send something in that MAY be featured in a repair video, then here is the address. No items will be returned, so only send it in if it is of no value to yourself.
PO Box 2597

I don't think couriers send to PO boxes so in the UK it would need to sent via Royal Mail.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince. - Jak na to + styl
Another fab video Vince. I recently bought a Rechargeable fan from Amazon and it turned up broken. Amazon refunded me for the price of the fan and told me to dispose of the damaged product. For the first time after watching your videos for years, I decided to take the fan apart, fault find with a multimeter and desoldered a faulty capacitor. Found the replacement part on eBay, put everything back together and it now works an absolute treat. Thanks for showing us all that we can recycle things and do our part to reduce electrical waste! :)
MMV Fan Club: "Hey can we buy stuff from you?"
MMV: "Nah you can have it for free lol"
This is the only channel that I can easily hit the like button 1 second in.
Go watch rate my takeaway

You hit the like button 1 second in? I hit it before the video even starts.
"Devalue it even more by signing it" - Quite possibly the best line ever.
Simple, yet hugely satisfying. Love the tea break series 👍
Thank you Steve, it was strangely satisfying this one. I think it was because the switch was a bit more unusual than normal. Cheers mate 👍👍👍
You gotta love the VFD's, In a dark room, they can really light the place up.
That VFD looks nice and bright so should be good for another 45 years......👌
Didn't notice earlier 710k subscribers. I remember not log ago 100k. Continue with great content. Only things i miss is long long videos of fixing. Great job and i wish you all the best
Nice fix, cool 70's calculator. Love the VFD display :)
VFD. I bought a 1974 Casio with VFD 2 weeks ago from a car boot sale for 3 euros. All it had was some corrosion on the battery contacts. Quick clean and works fine. Though the power switch may need a slight clean too.
Those vacuum displays look very nice.
I knew you’d be able to fix it easily. I did think it would be the switch due to its location next to the battery compartment, but I haven’t got a clue about soldering etc, so I thought I’d send it to the only man I know who does. Great fix and looking forward too some more in the future. Gordon 😊
Thanks for sending it in Gordon 👍👍👍👍 It was enjoyable to do and edit, perfect little tea break fix.
Nice one Vince getting a calculator this old working again is amazing, we seem to be living a throw away society especially with electronic items.
I love fixing up these old calculators. Usualy pretty simple.
Great stuff, Vince. I've learnt loads from your videos, and your fault-finding abilities are absolutely first class. Keep up the great work! You’re an inspiration.
wow that display thing is seriously cool. Nice fix as always Vince
Aw this hit me right in the feels. My Gran had a similar calculator with a red display rather than the green numbers. I wish I could remember what it was called - great wee vid Vince 👏🏼 👏🏼
Tell ya what Hev, those light up digits are far better than the cheaply build calculators I've ever used since the 90s.
Either this idea or a simple backlight mod on a modern unit would be ideal. The latter is food for thought.
@@ToxoRetro now that I would like to see!
lol How to "Devalue": Will NEVER be with your signature, Vince. NICE job.
🤣🤣👍
You can see the VFD display blink all digits as it calculates - just like in the EM calculators ! Amazing tech for the time
Lovely little tea break fix.
I love vintage calculators. My favourite is the Commodore SR7919.
Excellent content as always. A thing that i've learned a few month ago, use small drop of water on the end that doesn't have super glue, that will function as activator. Almost instant connection ;)
Good job! CONGRATULATIONS! 😍❤️💯👏
Lovely repair Vince. It’s great how you always go the extra mile to restore an item by cleaning it up and polishing out all the scratches. I think the giveaway items are a great idea, by the way.
Thanks for the break Vince, I needed it. Appreciate the videos
Thank you Travis 👍👍
Nice fix, man! Funny how a repair of an old calculator can be so entertaining!!!
New to your channel and loved this video! Great to see someone bringing a classic old VFD Casio to life!! Little bit of history!
Loved this fix
Great Fix Vince. Nice edit too. I like the voice over of the fast forward reassembly. I have a few retro calculators in my "yet to fix" pile, but no VFD ones. Nice little thing that calc. Anyway great video, nice fix. Loving your channel as always.
i remember coming to this channel from watching a video on how to fix my safe mode ps4 i appreciate you vince thank you i enjoy these videos even though i don't have anything that needs to be repaired
its a satisfying feeling being prepared 😉
Ooh tea break fix love these
That is a nice calculator. I love the aesthetic on the older equipment, especially VFD displays. They are so much nicer than LCD.
Awesome ! That was a fun one and snazzy little calculator
What a lovely VFD tube! But yeah, if there's a dc jack you kinda know it's gonna have some vacuum tech inside :D
Anyways, I really like old japanese calculators, glad you got this Casio counting again!
Lovely video. I was at college when calculators came out, they were £100 each even in them days. Needless to say I now have well over x60+ vintage calculators because I just love them. Most are in mint condition but strangely vince I keep buying more! I just love them from an early age. And they are clever also. Regards rich.
Oh wow, I didn't think I'm gonna see it ever again
Nice tea break fix. Interesting about the corrosion wicking.
We totally need a signature Vince.
Cheers Emma, I used to see it on telephone cables. Rain would travel in through a damaged cable and run along the inside of the cable (even travel vertically), and end up causing damage to the junction box inside the property. It can travel surprising far. I will get practicing my signature 🤣
Thanks Gordon.
Thank you so mutsh i check my mail 10 times a day now :)
Brilliant fix!
Haha, I will let you know when I have the box ready 🤣🤣 Cheers Anders.
Lovely tea break fix!!!
Thank you Chris 👍👍👍👍
Nice fix.
Nice, simple fix! The calculator would look better without the horrible, shiny sticker though. I'm guessing some company bought a load of these calculators for its employees and put their own sticker on it.
I dont know what it is but i like collecting old calc. they just look neat !
great video 👍👍👍👍
Thank you AR 👍👍👍👍
Thank you, you motivated me to reactivate a bit by recording my own "Trying to fix" and uploading it to YT, and I apply some of your "figure it out" technique, fixed a bunch of XBOX 360 consoles which had RROD recently. I suggest taking one and trying to fix it, it's quite satisfying once you find the way to resolve it. :) Cheers!
A calculator the same age as me 🙈 great video again 👍🏻
45 years ago, these devices were invaluable for students. Although, I suspect they were looked down upon by most maths teachers as it was standard practice to show your, 'working out', rather than to rely on a machine to do it all for you. Of course, it was only the more well-to-do students who had access to such devices, anyway, as they weren't exactly cheap when they first came out.
I’m 22 and learnt from this video that MR means memory. Can’t believe it.
Best youtuber in the world keep it up
👍👍👍👍👍
guess you took some calculated risks vince :) nice tea break fix :)
I had to leave that MMV Fan Club :( to many spoilers posted from Patreon on it. Was finding out what videos and the turn out of the videos before it was even released to us normal members. Took the enjoyment of watching the videos out of it.
p.s. Great fix though here.
Thanks for the info, you are not the first to mention this. That is one of the downsides of having a Patreon. I wonder if there is a way around this. Like if 'spoiler' was written before a post talking about an upcoming video, and then the reader has a choice of whether or not to look at it. Hopefully it can be worked out 👍👍👍👍
@@Mymatevince Looking into it now
We have listened to the feedback and stopped linked spoiler in the regular flow sence a few weeks back, now we are moving it to an upcoming discord server where you don't get the info with out clicking the room.
I love how the video ID says "WeTwcMauI"
Darth Maul's Wet Water Closet XD
🤣
Great stuff, just long enough to allow me to eat lunch and have some Vince :)
Cheers Antony 👍
Game & Watch's are expensive. I'm still looking for the one I had as a child back in the 80's. It was called Manhole, the classic version from 81. Not the Gold edition that was a rerelease.
One day you will become lagend. And people will start hunting for your authentic try to fix stuff, on pawn store or auction. One days🤗
I fixed this exact same one! Haha, coincidental. Tho I gave my to a friend as a lil' gift.
Back in the day I had a Commodore scientific calculator with a Red VFD.
Another good video 58008 :)
I would happily pay $50 for that piece of history!!!
Yep,your good at all fixing Vince noice or nice😂🤣
I have a working version by Sperry & Remingtomn - 1125-M 1975 same as the Casio, my Dad used repair them and I have others inc 825-GT and a early Sperry 'compact printer' portable calc that printed out on sideway from the top on like dyno tape paper
I just learnt what the MR button does on a calculator.
Legend says, that if I comment early enough the mythical man (Vince) himself will reply!
You just have very wishful thinking
The legend is sometimes true my friend 😂👍
@@Mymatevince it's a miracle.
thank
I have this kinda calculator from Casio, but a bit taller than this, and I don't know the model no, cause that's faded already.
Me too, I really love your channel. Are you sure this one is from 1975? To me it strikes me from 3-5 years later. I had a brand new larger Casio model 'fx 100' in the early 80ies which looks like its bigger brother which served me brilliant in maths German grammar school years 8 - 10. Maybe I am wrong? For the nerds to confirm pls that it is a vintage year '1975'. Tyvm!!!
Brasso on plastic??? Who knew?? And yes the old calculators had to use the multiply button with the percent button.
VINCE! Do another PSP!
Nice work i bet it is the switch that is at fault in the casio pocket p811 i have here no sign of corrosion though but could be dirty .
Hey, you laugh. But people WILL purchase 'Official MMV' merch. Tellin ye.
Keep the videos coming, love em. (My Jammy Mate Vince) 👍🏻
I also bought a broken calculator from 70s it ws a casio it's a ld 81
You should write a secret code or just your name somewhere on every thing you fix
Agora é só calcular 👨🏻🏫
these were ridiculously expensive back in the day. I bet it was about $80usd then. I didn't get one until about 77, and I think my Grandpa paid almost $20 canadian dollars which today would be about $70ish. It used a 9v battery. When they invented solar, then these became cheap.
Varta haha is the killer battery
How did you took out the switch?
I just tried a similar repair of a plastic part with the same solder iron technique (but it failed.) Have you tried the Bondic brand "glue" that cures with UV light?
If you want to see something funny queue up a long number and do a square root or long division on it. It uses an iterative process to solve and you'll see the numbers flickering as it stores the working result in the same memory used to draw the output
Hello mate, I was wondering..., how hot is your soldering iron? (In celcius). Thanks.
Hmm varta now that is a brand that is hated by the retro computing communities for leaking cmos batteries that destroyed so many boards from the late 80s through out the 90s. They love to explode inside vintage macs and in PCs of the time they slow leak eating away at everything that comes into contact often eating traces while seeping between the layers of the pcbs.
Autosol metal polish is way better than Brasso
Vince - I have a dead Asus TUF gaming Z730 motherboard with i3 chip that stopped working - I had it replaced under guarantee, but kept the dead one. You can have it free if you would do a trying to fix it video
👍👍 Cheers Piano man. I would like it BUT at this moment I don't have anything to go with it like the PSU or cables etc. to connect things up. I am slowly getting into laptop repairs and I have just finished looked at a DELL All in One PC so I will get there. Maybe if you still have it later in the year and are still happy to send it in, we could sort it out then?
Cheers.
@@Mymatevince I 'm sending you a message vis your facebook page as that's private.
Used to spell " shell" and "boobs" on our first school calculators.... Oh how things have changed.
3x yaaay :D yaaaay
What is brasso can you help me find it might polish some plastic I need smoothened
Sorry Vince, I have to stop watching. According to my calculations you dont drink coffee 😭😂 awesome fix as always. On a side note though, did you beat me to a macbook on ebay this afternoon lol
what do you do with all the stuff you fix? been watching for years and always wondered! seems like too much to store especially the really random toys!
👋🏽, my question is; ca we send you items to your can repair?
Did you get the vinegar or IPA on your knuckles?
Haha, no, luckily I didn't. Those were caused by a Nespresso Coffee machine (upcoming video) 🤣🤣
Hi
Hello
Hi
mate, what's a tea break?
👍
I have two Xbox’s and I wanna sell one of them does it delete my Microsoft account if I pick delete and remove all?
Here?
Can I have the calculator please as its the same age as me.
I will pay you for it
I'm disappointed, I expected you to type 80085 or 55378008 as a test!
I know!!! what a missed opportunity 🤣🤣 That 55378008 is a new one for me, surprised that didn't do the rounds at school 30 years ago.
LoI
27
No calculator has ever been fully tested until it's had 710.77345 and 58008 typed in and spun round.
😂🤣🤣
am 2nd!
