- My favourite video so far...
Trying to fix a very badly damaged metal detector Zennox GC1006. Purchased from eBay, it looks like it lived in the sea with SpongeBob SquarePants for a good while. Will it repay me with promises of finding silver and gold???? Let' find out.

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince. - Jak na to + styl
Spoiler Saver
Hope you enjoy it 👍
Measure that wax and see if it became conductive. If it got into salt water... perhaps it wicked under and into everything including the waxy bits.
There's a spoiler in the title Vince😉
Vince, remember that Switch that made the popping noise when it turned off? What was the fix, I cant find the vid at all now. Cheers. Marc
Impressive video, brother.
The dog bowl is Spratt's Patent Ltd. Made in England. Founded by James Spratt, an American, in Poplar, London circa 1860. He was the world's first large scale manufacturer of dog biscuits. He also had an employee by the name of Charles Cruft (who went on to found the Crufts Dog Show). 🐕 Quite the find you have there, Vince! 👍
My my Steve, what a great comment. Who needs Google when we have you! Cheers mate, that makes it all the more interesting now. You just need to find out about this ring, looks to be made of copper with silver and gold plating. I have faith in you Steve !!!! 😁👍
Vince fixes metal detector to find more broken items to fix. Great fix 👍
🤣🤣 hahaha, thanks Paul👍
It‘s like fixing a damaged multimeter with a multimeter.
Really interesting, Vince! I imagine your next video will have to be: "Trying To Fix the 27 craters I dug up in my Dad's garden!" 🤣
Hahaha
🤣🤣 Spoiler Alert!
🤣
🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Others would have given up after seeing how many traces were broken, but that's why we love you, you spent all those hours any way and managed to fix it. That plus the treasure hunt, brilliant stuff.
I smell a new series with the treasure hunts. I loved that part :)
Thank you 11Y, that is very much appreciated 👍
Can we have a whole video of you going metal detecting? That would be amazing.
He would probably find an unexploded bomb and try fixing it.
yes! dig up the whole backyard!
This was a quite remarkable video, I would watch a whole series of just you treasure hunting for sure! Thanks for 30 minutes of pure entertainment!
Thanks MrKeebs, I loved doing this one!
@@Mymatevince and it shows! 😊
When I saw the round shape of that sconce I was worried you’d come across an unexploded WWII bomb for a second.
Haha, prodding it with a nail bar! 🤣
same!
Now that would be one interesting fix video. Trying to fix WWII bomb.
@@Paf2022 I'll give my ex's address for that.
Me too...it kind looked like a landmine.
It used to be pretty common to put wax on a PCB around components that were sensitive to leakage current, or to lock sensitive inductors in position.
I’m only 54 seconds in and... I get it. He’s thinking, “Forget eBay. I’ll find my own things to fix via this metal detector!”
Episode 2: Vince digs up his whole garden!.... Episode 3: Vince digs up his neighbours garden! :) great video
I love the variety in fixes these days, intermingled with the good modern stuff tips and hints.
After seeing the massive amount of bad traces, I would have choosen to scan the PCB in a scanner and make a new one, I mean fixing traces in computer would have been easier I think. But man your perseverance is beyond amazing, keep up the good work ^^
Hearing and seeing the excitement behind the first find would have made the repair worth it to me too.
It was brilliant, and to be rewarded so quickly on the first few swipes of the detector. It was just perfect for the end of the video 👍
At this point i'm convinced that Vince surprises himself most of the time when he actually manages to fix things that look impossible to fix.
Interesting repair. I remember when my ex bought our son a metal detector, taking him to the beach and saying the detector was faulty as it went off everywhere. The I reminded her "You do know a Steel Mill used to be here on this beach."
We've seen inside of Vince's walls, on top of his roof, under his floors, under the hood of his car, and now under his lawn. Vince has to be the most exposed CZcamsr on YT. Thanks for all the adventures! This channel, is by far one of my most favorite and interesting to watch.
Love when you pointed at it and said it already paid for itself
Hey Vince, I just wanted to thank you for your videos. I have been following you more than year and watched all your videos and you made huge progress. Every video is better and better. Keep going mate. When I see your new video I feel like my favorite TV show released a new episode. :)
That's great! Thanks Arsa 👍👍
Your dedication amaze me and I love how humble your reaction was with the small rewards at the end agai great video vince keep them comig please
I'm seriously impressed with your persistence, congratulations Sir you were rewarded because of it☺️
I was watching because I'm trying to fault find a broken detector I was given.
I gave up because the board had a small amount of corrosion and I know nothing about electronics, your persistence has made me soldier on and have another go.
Thanks mate 👍
Thanks Vince , love your thought process . You will tackle anything . I love your willingness
Amazing vid. Like others have said, seeing how many of the copper clad traces had corroded, I would have binned it ( I’ve been into electronics since a teen, I’m now 62 ) Your perseverance and persistence and enthusiasm make for great videos. Well done. To be able to use and get results from the metal detector, even better. Keep up the great work Vince!
You are living the dream! fixing electronics, repairing a metal detector, and finding local treasure! This was a fun video to watch, thanks.
Vince, I have been watching your videos for quite a while now. I think I stumbled across you when I was looking to fix one of my items but stayed because of your unending patience. I can say, having watched this video, that you have transcended to some Dalai Lama style electronics patience. I would have had one look inside and yeeted that thing straight to gadget heaven. Good job mate.
Love your videos, btw. Your curiosity and dedication is inspiring. The lengths you go to in order to fix some things that would be a "waste of time" and not make you any money is what makes it so great. Simply seeing your enthusiasm for just trying to figure what the problems are and how to fix them is definitely contagious. Always impressed by your knack for troubleshooting and being a quick learner.
I used to watch your videos a lot a few years ago, then the CZcams algorithm stopped showing them to me. Subscribed recently when I remembered your channel name so I can keep following. Glad to have found your channel again. Keep doing your thing!
Thanks Anthony 👍
I love fixing stuff and metal detecting! Finding relics and old coins is a blast! Nice work Vince!
That detector was probably used at the beach over the course of it's life and has seen a lot of sea spray... hence the amount of board rot.
I guess the saying is true. Good things do come to those who wait.
Excellent video! I love that you went out to the back yard with your son and actually had a good time with a few decent finds!
Keep up the good work!
Cheers from Indiana, USA
Wow, after showing the board i thought its never worth the work repairing it. Additionally i have never seen traces that much corroded. Very good work!
Great fix looked like it would never work again with all those traces gone. But wow it came back from the dead and found items in your garden. I Have seen metal detectors on your tube who don't find anything like the candle holder with expensive equipment you have the knack. A new hobby in the making.
Metal detectors always bring Knight Rider tv-show episode "KITT vs KARR" in my mind, as the episode started with a guy with metal detector and that's how he found the evil KARR buried under the sand :D
This is just a fun video i learned and had fun at the same time thank you for sharing that experience with your son with us what a great community
Wow, you deserve a medal for the perseverance on that fix! Maybe there was moisture behind the wax affecting the chip there? When I was a kid and those detectors were all the rage, the beach was the place serious users went. People lose all manner of things when sunbathing, swimming, etc. Maybe a new profitable side hobby?! Great video.. Well done.
Love what you found in the garden. Almost makes me want to get one and try out my own garden and living on the coast, the beach too!
Had a few of those candleholders back in the day. Handy during the 70s power crisis.
possibly your best fix video (apart from the R2D2). Amazing work with basically rebuilding the entire board. A labour of love for sure. Fantastic ending as well and you have probably found more with that than most people find after a few trips.
R2D2 - well you might be slightly biased on that one Emma 🤣 👍
We were so lucky with the ring find at the end. A perfect finish to the video.
Thanks for watching and supporting!
I loved this video Vince.....This has to be the best one yet especially because you made good use of the detector later and in one day you found things older than 50Yrs and had great fun in the process....
Thanks Michael, I loved it too 👍
Absolutely loved this one vince, great fix and what an ending, better than time team.
Awesome video
Awesome vid - thanks for taking the time to film, edit, and share!
Is it just me that expected Vince to find an unexploded bomb and try and fix it in the next video
The fix that keeps giving! Awesome repair and troubleshooting as always.
Thanks Michael 👍
Been watching a lot of the old Time Team episodes lately. The ending here is like a watching one of their archaeological digs in your back garden.
Great stuff, been a subscriber for a year or two, much love from America!
Awesome video! I swear the quality of Vince’s content has got even better recently. You’ve got a real talent for presenting and dedication to overcoming whatever issues and problems that are thrown at you which is quite frankly inspiring.
Thanks Will for the kind words 👍👍👍👍👍
wow nice find on Ebay also nice fix and great finds in the garden vince :) are we going to see metal detecting videos from you that would be fun :)
What an effort, but what a result!! Amazing all this stuff was buried in the garden. Makes me want to get one myself
Another great video, i have to admit, even i love fixing stuff, this one i would give up. Amazing job with this one!
Vince.. I am SHOOK that this repair made you say the F word. ;)
Every man has his breaking point Kip! 🤣
This is very cool! And it's really interesting what you found. Now I want a metal detector.
That was a brilliant video. Loved the ending, clearly you and your son were having great fun.
Good idea to give that board a vinegar bath. Vinegar (acid) will neutralize the battery alkaline (base). Prevent the corrosion from coming back. Amazing fix!
Hello Vince , im subscribed to your channel for a few years now , always love the content . I myself am metal detectorist , and thats amazing , finding a ring in the first hole , lol . We never know what we find the backyard gardens . I love metal detecting , its so good for your mental health , its addictive , but we need to do things the wright way .
I absolutely love the videos! I have never seen someone who needs a desoldering gun more then you. They're very reasonable in price and save hours of stress and frustration!
Thanks Jeremy. Funnily enough I bought one a few weeks ago but I haven't unboxed it yet! An average one for £80. Should hopefully come in useful 👍
Amazing! I love metal detecting videos. And you combined a MMV viddy with metal detecting!
This is a great fix!! And to find that cool stuff with it!! I got a metal detector and all I have found so far is old aluminum cans! I'd love to find that stuff!!
Well that worked out an excellent conclusion, keep the channel updated if you find out more on the ring.
Your dedication is amazing, I think I would of given up as soon as I noticed all those traces haha. Great video
It’s not the fix or finding the goods it’s spending time with the lad that’s made it your favorite.
As always, you have far more patience than I ever would with such an item. Looks very much like it got very wet, i.e. was dropped in a pond or other body of water, and given up for dead when it no longer worked. Corrosion and the batteries not having been removed would have resulted with it becoming unusable. Glad you got it up and running again.
When are you starting your, 'Digger Vince', channel? 😊
Hi Vince can't believe you got that fixed, hat off to you well done. Mick 👍👏🍻
Awesome video Vince history is just beneath our feet
My father did this for decades and as a boy it was exciting to go out with him to look for treasure. Found some interesting stuff over the years, jewellery, silver or gold coins, mostly pocket change but the big find like a gold nugget eluded him. Be sure to wear work gloves when digging so you don't cut yourself on something sharp!
It looks a lot like mine I had as a kid. I think it was about £30 from the catalogue. It spent a whole year at the bottom of the garden in all weather but somehow magically still worked. I have my Granddad's old detector he bought for the allotment about 20 years ago, maybe more and I may stick a battery in it and see if it still works.
This one looked like a mare! You should do 'try to build' videos with new products that come as a kit and maybe do a series of build with Vince where we all buy a kit and make a kit while following your exploits at the same time on CZcams.
Hi Vince, in addition to Trying To Fix videos, now Treasure Hunting videos. Looking forward to seeing what else you can find.
Very interesting fix and a great ending to the video finding those items in the garden.
Vince this is best video since boat chase with Ben for sure! I enjoy this video a lot, fresh content and great activity that you could go with your son for treasure hunting and he will not be bored even one second, I bet.
Thanks Solve, yes!!! not quite as action packed as the boat chase but equally as much fun 🤣🤣👍
Amazing! Now that is what I call saving something from heading to the e-waste landfill.
Thanks Todd 👍😁
That was a monster effort buddy! So many traces! 👍🏻
Thanks mate. I thought it would take about an hour. It took over 4!!!! Worth it in the end though 👍👍👍👍
i was waiting for the sight of the lawn after the moles had dug it up lol. I did hear seagulls, but i live inland and we have them, but if you do live near the coast, your lad will love that detector on the beach.
Wow, this is going above and beyond to fix it!
I only have one word for this video..........BRILLIANT.
Brilliant! What a great experience for all too! 👍
the best video from you. not that much fixing wise as it just was cleaning and trace repair but really those items must be old and who knows what else is under your grass...
Great video. Would be good to see more metal detecting with you and your boy!
Ok... this one is CRAZY... lol seriously I would have send this to the trash the second I saw the board lol I would never have the patience you have, you’re one amazing human haha
Great video repair and a garden full of history:-)
Kind of sad i was looking forward to watching this fix and the first comment i see is that it got fixed on mobile the comments show up without going into the comments i can still enjoy watching either way that ending was amazing so much fun finding that time capsule of buried stuff
Yeah, I did the spoiler saver as a pinned comment, but I think on mobile it brings up the latest comments. I don't know a way around this. Glad you enjoyed it though 👍
That was a heroic repair, Sir. It may well be working as well as it did when it was new. Unfortunately, that is only slightly better than it did before the repair.
dont be a pompous hater, it obviously detects metal 🙄
Need my Mymatevince fix so I came back to one of my favorite fixes lol
Very good find. Far better than the one I had. I don't think it'll be that cheap. Mine had 2 controls tune and sensitivity and I'm pretty sure all it did was beep. No meter. Also I don't think it would tell you if it was ferrous or non ferrous. 25 quid. I would expect one like you have there would be about 75 to 100 pounds.
hi tandy used to sell them when i was 16 when i was on holiday at the seaside after say 5pm when alot went home they came out with detectors along the sand
there was a big crazy once if i had alot of land i would put down train track as it would give me a good return and keep all the detecctors of my land as you know you can't just
use it you may find alot of gold one day i had to do work on a pcb like that right pain best to re solder all the tracks where needed it's a right pain i know
Damn you Vince! I finally jumped in because of you. I bought most of my stuff and enough to get started. I actually fixed my first thing. A star wars electric Battleship.
Great videos, keep it up.
😂Congrats TNT, here's to many happy successful repairs 👍
That was an ambitious repair. Well done mate. Not sure I would have bothered to fix all those traces, but hey, you did!
Thanks Tiporari 👍
Wow! I’m more impressed with the stuff you found in your garden then the fix! You should make a whole video of you and your son treasure hunting lol.
Grease/oil seemed likely by the look of the label on the back. When it’s translucent like this while still being able to read all the letters it’s very likely to be oil or grease.
Also absolute mad lad soldering all those traces! 🤯👍
That was a fun video!..Loved it!
Awesome, just awesome! Detecting, something the whole family can do together. What fun this was!
Great fix and great finds.
Go to the bath places in your area.
That's what treasure hunters do here in sweden to look for gold rings and jewelry that people dropped.
That was a hard one, great job and thank you!
👍
Mind wash your fingers there lmao...
very nice repair 👍
Thanks Anonymous 👍
It's very easy to believe that the way the metal detector was stored the wax soaked through to block connections. If you were able to melt it at 100° imagine how hot it got in a poorly insulated area with insulation on top of it, or plastics that magnified sunlight to hear everything up to extreme
Next week Vince Fixes his garden !!
Enjoying this one, Vincent and son do Time Team!
That was incredible! Hope you get to the beach or somewhere else! Well done 👍
Thanks Dorian 😁👍
Metal detecting is my main hobby,so that was interesting to see :-) I have a Quest Q40 and a Minelab Go-find60..Another good fix Vince, some interesting finds too !....It's quite an addictive hobby,if you have time, see if you can get land permission (necessary)...if you wish to detect on the beach/coastline you don't need permission.
Cheers Mike 👍
You're the reason we have a Switch. Love it, mate!!
That was a thoroughly interesting video Vince. Well done
Thank you 👍
Great vid vince! Thought you was digging up a water main or something lol
🤣
