SNP using “get out of jail free card” blaming the UK Government instead of taking responsibility

  • John Swinney must not “pass the buck” on the challenges facing the health service, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has said.
In his previous roles as finance secretary and deputy first minister, Mr Swinney has said he was upfront with the public on the situation within the NHS.
However during First Minister’s Questions on Thursday, Mr Sarwar said the Scottish Government’s “financial mismanagement” had created a £1.4 billion black hole in the health sector.
He said: “Our NHS faces the biggest crisis in its lifetime. Health boards have been asked to make cuts across the country because of decisions made by John Swinney. So does he accept responsibility?”
Mr Sarwar also accused the First Minister of using a “get out of jail free card” by blaming the UK Government instead of accepting responsibility.

The SNP has not fulfilled their duty to the Scottish people. Their excessive focus on independence and woke ideology has resulted in an unfortunate squandering of valuable resources that could have been better allocated to address the needs of our disadvantaged communities.

Swinney stood there today, trying to defend not only Sturgeons failures, not only Yousafs failures, but his own over the last 17 years.
Talks about years of austerity ! Who didn’t deal with it ? Says the SNP are putting more of their budget into the NHS than any other service. So why is it getting worse ? And that doesn’t include the record funding they received from the UK gov. Same old excuses.

  • @patricklee6206

The NHS is the best funded service in Scotland that's because it is the biggest employer of all public services.
The same is true in all of the 4 countries of the UK. It is a meaningless sound bite.
If the SNP spent less on freebies and all those vanity projects like independence and spurious legal battles with the UK government not to mention the attack on Salmond. Then maybe there wouldn't be a
£1.4bn black hole in their budgetary spending.
Scotland already get a 30%+ per head Barnet payments over England and have their own tax raising powers. But it's never enough.
Maybe the present so called cost of living crisis is more down to covid lockdowning the economy ( an exercise that was more draconian in Scotland), plus the war in Ukraine.
Austerity was ended in the UK by Boris Johnson in September 2019.
The present difficulties are more due to more recent events which is why the UK isn't the only ones that have a cost of living crisis.
As for liz Truss's budget, well it wasn't even implemented, the real culprit for high mortgage payments and interest rates is the Bank of England. It's them that control interest rates and indulge in quantitative easing.
Same old blame game just a different main mouthpiece with the SNP.

NHS Scotland staff are paid more for the same grade job as NHS England, with perhaps the exception of those that specifically get London weighting, despite the cost of living difference.
I have to say in all fairness, I had a very well run GP service in Scotland and my family have received treatment, albeit for relatively minor problems, reasonably. That said I am also aware of catastrophic problems with serious consequences, e g the ambulance crisis and people waiting a long time for elective sugeries despite how debilitating their condition is.

There's austerity all over the rest of the UK because of the excessive grant the SNP get, more than Wales, Ulster and England per head. The SNP have frittered the money away on Gay rights and Transgender people, Motorhomes and goodness knows what else. His speech is a repeat of the Tories speech on austerity.
