We are all at the mercy of the "Establishment " forget what polical party is in government it makes no difference. Callahan made his son inlaw ambassador to the US, Chris Patton lost his seat so was made Governor of Hong Kong, Kinnock and his teacher wife both became E.U. He really is, they all are, and it’s fascinating to watch her ‘think’…
…reverting to ‘unknown unknowns’, is clever - but undoubtedly disingenuous, because that ‘truth’ was a choice.
Answering the question Mr Beer was asking: why didn’t you know?
Answer: because she knew EXACTLY how damaging (and criminal!) the scandal was, so she chose to remain ignorant of the greater ‘corporate memory’ available to her.
A master of deceptive thinking, but the MENS REA is established via an adverse inference: she knew, and she knew ‘just enough’ to choose to leave the remaining unknowns: unknown to herself - an intentional act of omission - and now she’s just confessed under oath.
It’s a subtle confession, but a confession under oath nonetheless…
…and an unintentional one at that!

@@Mikados_Advark12 I think you'll have to amplify that. Venells' excuse is effectively that she was colossally incompetent. Clearly, she isn't. You don't reach the positions she did by being the kind of idiot she would have had to be to have "not known" that postmasters were being prosecuted by the company she ran. That means that everything she has said today is a lie, including all the theatrical tears, which also indicate that she has no shame (she has the audacity to shed tears after all the suffering that has been endured by employees of the company she chaired?), and she accepts no responsibility (she was poorly informed and people kept things from her). Those are the actions of a Grade A, high=functioning psychopath.

Seriously, it is IMPOSSIBLE that Venells knew as little as she claimed. As CEO, she would have been involved in the process, if not from the beginning, then certainly once the prosecutions began. There is ample evidence that the Post Office did everything it could to cover up problems with the Horizon system, which it knew was faulty, to blame any problems on the postmasters and mistresses, and then to cover up what they knew. As a result, literally hundreds of lives were literally ruined. Venells denied all knowledge of the coverup as well as any responsibility for the suffering inflicted on her employees. Worse, she cast herself as a victim of others' deception and incompetence. In fact, if you listen closely, she didn't actually apologise for anything, beyond one of those corporate non-apology apologies. (she was, "sorry for all that the sub-postmasters and their families have suffered”, not for anything that she did).
I don't know how much you know about psychopathy. I'm not an expert, but I do know quite a bit. Not all psychopaths are like Hannibal Lecter, in fact, most of them aren't, but lack of empathy (Could the suicide have been motivated by anything other than the hounding of Post Office officials?), a refusal to take responsibility ("I was too trusting of others"), an extreme capacity for deception and evasion, and a lack of consideration for the rights of others are among the key characteristics of psychopathy. Venells has them in spades. I don't know what the rest of her life is like, but I would say that the likelihood is high that she is some type of psychopath.
It is unlikely that there will be a smoking gun, as the Post Office has been destroying evidence and obstructing the investigation for a long time (much of it on Venells' watch). As I said, she would have to be the most colossally incompetent CEO in history to be as ignorant as she claimed, and people that incompetent usually aren't capable of writing 750 page statements. At the very least, she is a pretty craven human being, having been on nearly 3/4 of a million a year, not to say, "Yup, I messed up. I may not have known all the details, but I was CEO and the buck stops with me!"
In terms of assigning blame, the inquiry won't achieve much more than it has, any more than Leveson, Hutton or Chilcott did. These inquiries are mainly PR exercises. I'm content to believe that Venells is a cold-hearted corporate liar, that she was one of the principal architects of the prosecutions and the cover-up, and that her behaviour throughout is the result of some type of extreme pathology, and not just ass-covering and the advice of lawyers.
