God bless you Akala. We the people of Nasarawa State are proud of you. You did extremely well during your days as the LG chairman of Karu. How I wish you are the one there now that the supreme court has granted the LG their full autonomy.

Suppose the tenure of the elected local government council members expired? Should they continue?

It's a complex question! Firstly, if governors weren't selfish, there wouldn't be a vacuum; an election should be conducted three months before the expiration of the current elected members' term. Secondly, are you aware that the LG's tenure was initially four years? Who changed it? It was the House of Assembly members, influenced by their governors! And guess what? There is no uniformity in LGs' tenures in Nigeria; some use three years, and one LG even uses only two years. Let me also remind you that the constitution grants the power to make laws for LGs to the House of Assembly members guided by the constitution itself. IF NOT FOR THE SITUATION AND POLITICAL ATMOSPHERE in Rivers State, that would have been the best way to control these greedy governors. If a governor refuses to conduct an election, appointing caretakers should not be allowed.

@@user-yj7rc2qs8d You are right. It's complex and I think the Rivers State Governor would have done so but as he earlier said in an interview, he started work as Governor in February this year. The machinery for governance was not in his hands until then. I'm keenly watching to see how this plays out. We're all rejoicing but for some key people the reason for their rejoicing may not be the same as that of the common man. 🤔
