  • Julian Edelman played for the New England Patriots for 12 years, and so of course Colin Cowherd invited the former NFL player onto The Herd to discuss the decline of Bill Belichick's patriots. The much respected coach has now suffered two of the worse losses of his career back-to-back and Edelman expounds on what he thinks is missing, or if Mac Jones is truly to blame. They also discuss the success of Brock Purdy in San Francisco, and why the 49ers QB is the real deal. Plus, Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos are 1-4, and Edelman tells Colin if Russ is doing enough to elevate the team.

I agree that the O-line & D-line are the most crucial positions to a team’s overall success. However, I will say that when a team is spoiled with an All-Time great QB like a Brady or a Peyton Manning, these great QBs have the ability to hide some of their O-line’s weaknesses because of how great they are at making quick, accurate decisions with the football. Case in point. Look at the Colts that season where Peyton missed the whole season due to injury. With Peyton, the Colts were pretty much 13-3 or 12-4 every season (with the exception of Peyton’s rookie season). For a team to go from a consistent 12-4 (or 13-3) the previous 8 or 9 seasons to 1-15, just because they are missing ONE player, tells me that if that player happens to be an All-Time great QB, then for that particular team, the QB position leapfrogs the linemen as being the “most crucial” position (for that particular team’s overall success).
Let’s also say, hypothetically, after Tom Brady’s first 10 seasons with the Patriots (midway through Brady’s career), Bill Belichick was given an ultimatum by Kraft that Bill had to choose between keeping Brady versus keeping all 5 of their starting offensive lineman (all 5 of whom were perennial Pro-Bowl selections), Bill would keep Tom and take his chances on building a new O-line, as opposed to keeping his 5 All-Pro offensive lineman and having to find a QB to replace Tom. And I believe ANY head coach would make the same decision and choose to keep Tom over keeping all 5 All-Pro starting offensive linemen.

Belichick in 10 seasons of coaching without Tom Brady: 79-88 record, including 42-41 at home and 31-64 vs .500 teams, 7 losing seasons, 0 Division titles.
Belichick with Tom Brady: 219-64 and 6 SB titles. The fact is, with another coach, Brady would have won perhaps 7 or 8 SB for the Patriots. For example, the decision to bench Malcolm Butler just before the start of the SB against the Eagles cost them the game. Obviously, the players on the defensive team were completely distracted by the decision to bench the veteran player. Belichick is dramatically exposed since Brady left New England...

I get the case, but it is not the only variable. You have to look at it year by year. 2000 was his first year with the Pats, so the roster wasn't that good. 2001 Brady was just starting and the defense really carried the team, with Brady doing just enough (Raiders and Rams, e.g.). So, go like that to 2023, you will see a lot of talent turnover, some unlucky plays, some mistakes on the part of the other team (Seattle), inexplicable strategy by the opponent (Falcons), defense again won against Rams for Brady's 6th. Most years when they were offensive juggernaut, they failed to win the SB. So, you cannot look just at the record. I think Belichick did make mistakes, but he is responsible for everything around there, Brady for the offense. The culture Brady exhuded was Belichick's. It's just that Belichick needs a GM, he needs consultants who think like him, not his kids, not coaches who failed elsewhere (O'Brien, Patricia, Judge). Lombardi was a good fit there, for example.

Because that was the narrative in the early aughts when Manning was throwing to Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison and Dallas Clark, while Brady was throwing to Troy Brown, David Givens and David Patten. When Belichick actually got him a deep threat in Moss, Brady was throwing bombs every game. A strong arm is what makes those thread-the-needle passes work, which was Brady's bread and butter.

Agree. No one here is saying Mac is a special talent, but he’s a capable qb with a team around him and there’s evidence of it at Alabama and his first year in the nfl, including a near comeback win against Brady his rookie year under McDaniels. Discussing San Francisco in the same conversation is a joke to me. Brock executes and it’s impressive, but he executes in an environment that is set up for him to succeed on every single level with talent, some of the best in the league, and coaching that is QB centered. The patriots have the worst in the league on most levels, and Mac Jones is set up to fail and punished for not making magic happen and overcoming failures at every stage. Brock wouldn’t look the same if he played in New England, Tua would already be back on IR.

Why Belichick didn't help Mac Jones along better is beyond me. It's like he wanted a throwback style team of defense and running and Jones just bail them out on 3rd down but he needs reps and rhythm and confidence.

From the standpoint Edelman mentions, a defensive HC can be better than an offensive one as long as there’s a great O.C. and the HC takes time to sit with his QB and teach him defenses.

7:27 - "I think that Bill taught Brady differently. They had a different type of relationship where Bill taught Brady defenses. They would meet every Monday for three hours and go over the defense they were [facing]. Every week. Every Monday Bill and Brady would sit and watch film and Bill would give Brady his takes on what he thought the defense was trying to do and they probably developed a relationship. And that's what Bill's two cents went into with Brady."

The thing nobody mentions is that they had bottom 3 draft picks for 20 years. Hall of Fame GMs hit on 50% of their first round picks when it's an average pick, 1-16. When your picking 29-32 in every round of every draft for 20 years your hit rate is going to be 5% at best. The league is designed to punish successful teams.

In that Patriots-Rams Superbowl, I always felt like McVay didn't prepare Goff for what he would possibly be facing. He caught a lot of flak but he got there with no Kupp, no Gurley. A lot of that loss was simply that McVay wasn't a "genius" and Belichick knew that he was stubborn just like every other guy from the Shanahan tree.
