    I was 10 yrs old when this song was released. My parents were in a bowling league and used to drag me along on Monday nights. To placate me, they would give me 2 quarters for the jukebox. Back in the day that meant 6 songs! I would play Mississippi Queen 4 times and Hand Me Down World by the Guess Who twice!!! By week 3 of the league the jukebox suddenly had an "out of order" sign taped to it; but strangely only on Monday nights! LOL!!

    Mountain was one of the hottest band in the 70's....Excellent band!!! Mountain is an American hard rock band that formed on Long Island, New York in 1969. Originally comprising vocalist and guitarist Leslie West, bassist and vocalist Felix Pappalardi, keyboardist Steve Knight and drummer N. D. Smart, the band broke up in 1972 and has reunited frequently since 1973. Best known for their cowbell-tinged song "Mississippi Queen", as well as the heavily sampled song "Long Red" and their performance at the Woodstock Festivalin 1969.

    Felt same way about "Rumble" by Link Wray - that was a big one for me. Same kind of thing you've been sort of looking for, maybe without knowing it. Except that's not...it's a different rock, but a huge part of it. He was a father of rock - but hardly known save for more recently.
    Another great hard rock tune, and this is Hard Rock, is "Heavy Metal" by Sammy Hagar. And "Bad Motor Scooter" and "I Got the Fire" by Montrose.

    I saw Mountain live back in the day. The lead signer is the lead guitar player as I recall.

    Leslie West...(RIP) HUGE mountain of a man, guitar and the vocals on this track. The other singer and bass player, Felix Pappalardi made his name as a producer before playing in Mountain.
    He produced The Cream albums... (Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker & Jack Bruce CREAM...)

    You have to remember songs back then HAD to be radio friendly for length to get played by radio stations.

    • @r.awilliams9815
      @r.awilliams9815 Před 4 lety +1

      Aye, there were some very good bands that didn't get much airplay because they made radio-unfriendly songs...a prime example is Ten Years After. They had one radio hit, I'd Love To Change The World, but most of their catalog never got air time because of their length.

      @@r.awilliams9815 I had that album. It was an excellent album, Alvin Lee was a great guitarist. For Mountain, I think the original "Nantucket Sleighride" was over 4 min. Steppenwolf had "Monster", "For Ladies Only" and the original version of "Magic Carpet Ride". I completely agree.

    They sound a lot like Nazareth to me, but of course Dan McCafferty had such a unique voice. Holiday from Nazareth is good.

    Lead Guitar was the great Leslie West. The bassist , Felix Pappalardi also worked with Cream, co writing Strange Brew with Eric Clapton and contributing musically, arranging and involved in the production of Disraeli Gears, he was often called the fourth member of Cream. My favourite Mountain song is Nantucket Sleighride , an epic.
