Gotta say it. MORE COWBELL! And more Leslie West and Felix Pappallardi. An original Heavy Metal classic. Mountain ROCKS! BTW, Vicksburg is a river town along the Mississippi River, in Mississippi. It was the sight of a major battle during the U.S. Civil War, eventually won by the Union forces, led by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, later a President of the USA.

This song was a huge inspiration for young rock n rollers and has been a staple on FM rock stations since it came out in 1970. it is a one hit wonder, but Leslie West, the guitarist and singer made some albums on his own with lots of collabs with other musicians. His cover of When a Man Loves a Woman with Jonny Lang is very good, very bluesy.

This is a song that you crank the radio up in the car, sing or lip-sync to, and hope you don't get a speeding ticket. The intro uses a cow bell (MORE COW BELL!!) that became an instrument in the mid-70's by several groups. BTW: Vicksburg, MS is the site of a large Civil War battle that went on at the same time as Gettysburg and was over-shadowed by it.

Mountain were an incredible band. I saw them from the 2nd row in Hawaii at an outdoor amphitheater and they were so loud that a minute into the first song they blew out the power in Honolulu! While it took almost 15 minutes to restore juice, nobody complained because we had heard how great it was going to sound! A magical night under the stars in tropical paradise. Yes to all the songs mentioned, plus "Don't Look Around" and "Blood Of The Sun". One of my favorite bands of all time!

Mountain could be described as 2 bands in 1. With Leslie West (guitar) doing the vocals, you get rough and raw like Mississippi Queen. With Felix Pappalardi (bass) doing the vocals you get a smoother, more polished sound. Check out Nantucket Sleighride and/or Theme for an Imaginary Western... sounds like a different band.

Always loved West's leads and tone. He usually took the less is more approach similar to BB King.
BB once said something about guitarists that played fast and used a lot of notes, " I hear you talking a lot, but you ain't saying nothing". Maybe not the exact quote, but it was something like that.
You picked a good one Bizmatic. This is a classic and very iconic rock song.

Harry Pendleton was once the owner of the famous "Marquee Club" in London, England. The Marquee is where everybody wanted to play. All great bands of the sixties and seventies have had a gig there. Kinks, Small Faces. The Who, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Lou Reed, Yes, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Neil Young, Ten Years After, Atomic Rooster and some. As such, in 1983, he was able to invite former bands who had performed at his club over the years and as 1983 was the 25th year Pendleton own the Marquee he was able to get some of the older bands. I played congas with Alvin Lee around a campfire near the river Thames with a blow this size. Good times, Bizz. Good times.

1970.....2nd gen heavy blues rock with some melodic stuff too... from Long Island NY.... Not really metal (though Eddie Van Halen was a huge fan of guitar/singer Leslie West). Somewhat a successor to Cream and other earlier heavy guitar bands that paved the way (like Hendrix, Zeppelin, Jeff Beck etc.... Nazareth who came slightly later is a great comparison.
