  • This video is about Fort Monroe in Virginia, also known as Freedom's Fortress. Fort Monroe National Monument is located in Hampton, Virginia, at Old Point Comfort, the southern tip of the Virginia Peninsula. This location has always been of strategic importance. Back in 1862, President Lincoln stayed at Fort Monroe Quarters Number 1. Fort Monroe is the largest stone fort built by the U.S.! Fort Monroe stood watch over the navigation channel between the Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads. It remained in operation until the end of World War II. The Chesapeake Bay, Potomac River, and water approaches to D.C. were protected by this amazing fortress. It's the largest Fort ever built by the United States. Connect with A Nose for Life

    Lived there in the late 60’s for four years. I have a lot of good memories. Went to elementary school there. Apparently the housing we lived in was destroyed in a hurricane a number of years ago.

      I hate it that the housing was destroyed. We recorded this a week before the 2020 lockdown. But it was already a ghost town. I don’t feel like we did it justice. It’s much more impressive than this video makes it look. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting!

      @@BillMarion yeah, I was disappointed I was hoping to see the house. That was in 2007 when I was there and it was still being used as a base. I got in because I was in the Navy reserve and had an ID card. I got busted by the police for taking pictures and had to delete all my photos in front of the cop. But I took some more lol.

      WOW! I think it would be pretty cool to live there. Honestly, this was a hard video to make because a lot of the information is divisive these days, and not CZcams friendly, which is a real shame. The fort is absolutely amazing. I don't think it's possible to capture the size of it on camera. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting!

    It was still an active army post until the early 60's, Hq. for the Army Training Doctrine Command, we lived there when I was 5 or so (1956). They were doing demolishing the old WW I (?) era artillery casemates when I lived there. My dad was a Capt. in the Army at the time.

    The removal of the "Jefferson Davis Memorial" was the right thing to do both Historically and Morally. First the Confederates never took Fort Monroe and it remained in Union Hands so no Confederate Monuments should be there to begin with. Second Davis was a prisoner at the Fort awaiting trial for his involvement in the War and the fact a Monument existed there in the first place is nothing more than a shine glorifying him.

    • @BillMarion
      @BillMarion  Před 2 lety

      I’m no Jefferson Davis fan by any stretch of the imagination. I had to re-watch that part of the video to remember what I said. After rewatching, I remembered what I was thinking. (Hope that makes sense). It was puzzling that there had been a Jefferson Davis monument there in the first place. But then to leave a note saying that it had been removed was equally weird. I was thinking, “Just take it down. No sense in stirring the pot. How many people were visiting to see a Jefferson Davis monument in the first place?” Did people really drive to Fort Monroe for Jefferson Davis?
      But then, I was conflicted because of the history. That our government showed Davis mercy is very historical. After all, Davis was a traitor and deserved a noose. The restraint and mercy shown by our government should be remembered and celebrated. It is interesting that after his release, Davis was instrumental in convincing southerners to be loyal to the Union. But still, I’m no fan of Jefferson Davis.
      I believe that the best way to deal with monuments, both good and bad, is to teach pure American History without indoctrination beginning in junior high, and continuing through college. My disgust with Davis is not because of what someone said about him. It’s because I made to read his own words. What he believed was, and still is, disgusting.

      @StarClad13 Před 2 lety

      @@BillMarion Of course not, no body goes to Fort Monroe just to see the Jefferson Davis Monument. When I said it was a shrine I was referring to the way it was put up in the first which was Davis the Confederate and not he himself.
      When it comes to Monuments I think the choice lays with the people or organization and they have that right to choose to leave or take down Confederate Monument and the choice made by the Fort Monroe organization was the right one, even going as so far to explain why it was there. I felt like it was handle properly.
      The Lost Cause Myth is a problem because it makes Southerns Misunderstand the War and gives a false-positive view of the War from the Southern view then of course skipping over reconstruction and the ugliness of that.
      Apart from what has been said, I think the video was good and I hope to see you cover more places in Virginia and the East Coast.

    • @BillMarion

      I'm sorry you didn't like the video. You have to keep in mind, this isn't a documentary. It's a general location description. We're mostly a travel channel. As far as my commentary being disgusting, I'd argue that it's bit light. The pandemic was just beginning, but right before everything shut down. Everything was still open, but it wasn't a good time to really dive in. Regardless, this is't a history channel, it's a light hearted travel channel. Now, as far as the music...You'll have to get in line to criticize the music. It's the most common complaint across all my videos. But I love all music, and I don't like being predictable in my selections. Still, I always welcome criticism. "Disgusting" is a bit much, but I can handle it. Thanks for giving the video and our channel a chance.
      Bill

      @7:25 - “It’s like a shipyard or something.” You didn’t do your homework. What you were looking at was Naval Station Norfolk, Atlantic Fleet Headquarters. And regarding the lighthouse, yes it’s a private residence leased to its occupants. The street you were on, Fenwick Road, was known as General Row and once housed the Commanding General of the U.S. Continental Army Command (CONARC), a four-star. Generals occupied the housing across from the gazebo when the fort was CONARC headquarters and previously. Among the more noted residents was Colin Powell when he was a three-star.

      Yes, You are correct. Here's the truth, we made this video days before the "event" in 2020 when everyone had to stay at home. It was an odd situation. I was having to wing it. But I don't think I was disrespectful or anything like that. I just didn't give it as much attention as it deserves. Over the next year I learned how to navigate situations like that a little better.
