- Time to get back to the Harbor Freight 44" tool box for some organization. Time to get the plier drawer into shape. Here I will build a DIY plier organizational rack out of some 20 gauge sheet metal. It could be done with less and quicker, but the point of being in the shop is to make something yourself, and to use and learn about your tools. Thanks for coming along.
Thanks for sharing the idea and process! Perfect timing for my tool box organisation.
Jesse, thanks for watching and commenting. I hope I gave you some ideas.
im just finding this guy right now but I love how he has a drawer for every hand took available
Absolutely brilliant, been wondering for ages how to organise my pliers,
Will definitely be making up something similar,
There are a ton of ways to do this, you just have to find what works best with the resources you have. Lots of folks have said that I spent too much time on this, but it was a fun project for me. Good luck with you project. R.J.
Great project. Thanks for sharing
Thanks. It was fun to do.
Nice 1972 El Camino, El Camino are my favorite car/truck. 😄👍
Liked your video. Your efforts paid off. You also got to play with some of your shop tools. Turned out great
Great video sir, thanks for sharing it!
Thanks for watching. Hopefully I will get more out soon.
Thanks for sharing that was cool !
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Looks good to me. Thanks for the plug.
Thanks for making it all the way to the end.
Cool video! Much cooler to build it yourself than just buy it, if you ask me. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching and commenting. Half the reason I have tools is to make more tools!
Nice organizing project!
It would be helpful to see the project finished at the beginning first.
Pretty cool idea.
Thank you sir. Hope all is going well in TX.
Nice, if only I could find the time to work on my tool box organization a little more. I have enough trouble keeping the shop clean and organized!
If you quit buying things it would be a start. Next time I am in your shop we can organize tools instead of cars. Thanks for watching.
Very nice. Detailed video
I started do something very similar. Looks like yours turned out nice and most importantly your happy with it. I got about 5 dividers in to making mine and thought some one has to make one of these! LOL
Yep, there are certainly lots of options out there. For me it was nice to get a chance to do some sheetmetal work. I hope you find a good solution.
Let me know when you are ready to start on kitchen drawers and closets!!!
Sending this to son in law Mike.
Let's see, drawers and closets out of 20 gauge steel. That will be about 300 pounds of organization. Thanks for checking it out. Take care.
that was pretty cool...I had the rack idea a while back , never did come to fruition though. maybe soon.
Thanks for watching. There are 100 different ways to do it, just pick what works best with the tools that you have and then have at it. R.J.
R.J.'s workshop yeah it's the have at it part that has been the trouble as of late, just can't seem to move it forward....I dunno...
Nice!
Thanks for watching and commenting. R.J.
That's a very laborious way to put sheet metal dividers together to make a rack. You'd never find a commercially produced rack made that way, and that's because it would cost too much in labour time.
Just a thought no bending or welding if you were to cut the uprights out as flat pieces and put a threaded rod through the uprights use spacers between over threaded rod to size for larger pliers also would allow you to make extra blanks and expand using more threaded rod. Your rack is nice. But requires welding and bending and if you don't have those skills or tools your out of luck.
You are correct, the design is limited only by your imagination. For me two of the major goals for the build (which I didn't explain anywhere) were to use my welder and bender. It was a good chance for me to increase my comfort level working with sheet metal. Thanks for the good comments and hopefully I will have some more things to share soon. R.J.
I think, I will build me a set of those :-) it is not always the goal, that is the goal... Sometimes it is the road to the goal, that is the goal ;-)
GREAT idea, but since I'm nit a metal worker I will do similar by cutting slots in 2 pieces of wood that will run full length of drawer, the pliers will drop into the slots
Numa, thanks for watching, and yes there are many ways to make this work. I made my design like this for two reasons, the sheet metal itself took up the least amount of room and therefore left more room for tools; and second it just gave me an excuse to use my sheet metal tools. Wood, plastic, or even foam would make good materials to make a organizer as well. Good luck with yours. R.J.
Could you provide a link to the $4, 15 minute method lease?
The point is when someone asks where did you get that nice plier rack, you say "I made it"
I can think of way cooler stuff to say I built that then waist my time building a plier rack. But to each their own.
@@Orlosthedruid Yeah but the hand made one is custom build to fit all these tools exactly. Good luck finding the exact dimensions you need on amazon, then try to visualize what it will look like in your toolbox. A competent fabricator could whip something like this up in a few hours, versus waiting a few days for a one-size-fits-all rack that might or might not work for you.
@@denisl2760 Exactly, I'm gonna build my own too
It looks like you could make the same rack , and put it opposite corner with the pliers heads facing the front of the box and it would be 100% organized.
The extra pliers that I have in the center are too large to stand up in the drawer. The system has worked well. Thanks for watching.
In my road box its hard to organize pliers
Hi RJ! It's RJ...what kinda wheels you got on that '72 Elco? Those are cool!
Hey, it''s the other RJ. They are from a C5 Corvette Z06, so 2001-2004. 17"x9.5" in the front and 18"x10.5" in the rear. Just the right width for an old muscle car. Thanks for watching. I hope to have another Vlog on the Elco this spring, as I plan to run the Hot Rod Power Tour again this year.
Diy with this shop specialty tools that everybody has at home
Much work. Ill just buy one on Amazon.
Nice job! Is that a steamboat hat? If it is go wyo!
Wyoming Cowboys. Go Pokes!
Should paint it white or yellow! Easy to see what’s missing????
Black doesn't show grease or dirt, so that is my normal go to. But that is the great thing about making something yourself. You can paint any color you like. Thanks for watching.
R.J.'s workshop you did an amazing job! I may just copy your design I like it so much! Keep up the great videos.
that was nice do another one put it opposit side then put the big piler in the middle also pattern it i will bye it remember the rich get richer by small idears
Would love to see the dimensions but I can eyeball it
What about just bending one large piece to form the bottom and back and then tack in dividers?
Thanks for commenting John, I really don't know why not to do it that way. As I reply to your comment I can't come up with a good reason why one would work better than the other, but for some reason my gut says that I like the individual bent up pieces welded together. The only thing that I can think of is you would need to get a good tack at the ends of each divider to make sure that the end doesn't flop around and if I were going to do that I think I would TIG weld them to keep the weld profile down. Just goes to show you that there are a ton of different ways to make the same thing. I just had a plan pop in my head and I went with it. If I get a chance sometime I might try your method and see how it works. Thanks. R.J.
I'm no metal worker, but I enjoy watching stuff like this. I'd be curious to see what the next one you build looks like. I have the wire pliers rack from amazon and like it, but a custom unit would be better for sure.
i was thinking the same exact thing when i saw the video. it seems like a lot of work and a lot of welding has gone into that rack. but the idea is great, and i am going to see if i can use it in my toolbox for my pliers. only i think i will make a top piece to hold the handles down, because a lot of my pliers have springs in the handles and they would get caught on the upper drawer when i open and close the drawers.
That's a ton of work considering you can buy these for about $20
Well, the main goal was to learn and use my tools, the by product was a pliers rack. So it really doesn't have anything to do with what I can find on Amazon. Thanks for watching.
I got a rack for my cart and one for my box for less than 40 bucks.
shaun rinker where can you get them?
Pretty much anywhere. I was in Northern Tool today and they had several cheap ones to choose from for like 10$. Looked decent. Any tool truck, online, etc
Just search plier rack.
Cool
Diy'er
Thanks for the comments. Hopefully I will get some more up to watch soon. R.J.
Just get these from amazon, much easier and probably less expensive.
That is absolutely ridiculous. How do you figure that it would be easier to buy a plier storage rack that I built from Amazon. I would have to start some sort of a business, get Amazon to sell my stuff, and they would likely want me to make allot more than 1, and then I would have to go and buy it from them. Makes no sense. Just like your comment. I don't think I could say it more, I wanted to build something I did. If you want to put a time and cost factor on any of this of course it is cheaper and quicker to buy something. Jeff Bezos thanks you. Thanks for your time that you spent to point this out in a comment Captain Obvious.
I would have painted it a brighter color.
That is the great thing about making it yourself, paint it whatever color you like! Black is a regular go to for something like this for me because I doesn't show grease and dirt as much. Thanks for watching.
Nice job. Why do you Americans make the word height sound like it ends in th?
Because FREEDOM!!!
eric messinger MURICA.
Can't believe I just watched this shit.
