Yeah man that Wayfarer record is 💥💥. Majesties was such a rad album. Totally nailed that 90s in flames vibe.
I couldnt do that new Wayfarer... to cowboy for me lol That Horrendous though! I never went and put it on but when spotify randomly played it I would make it go through the whole album!

Fantastic and varied list--but no surprise there! Mine tracks similar; Fires in the Distance was my number 1. Had some long flights last week, and "Air Not Meant for Us," Convocation's "No Dawn for the Caliginous Night" as well as the new Panopticon, "The Rime of Memory" proved to be EXCELLENT high-in-the-sky spins, and all three albums have spots in my top ten...Thanks for another year of stellar content, Forgemates! Looking forward to another go-round in 2024!

Love that list, and one of my best discoveries of the past 5 yrs. or so is Fvnerals. I love them. I need to give Svalbard another try - for some reason the vocal style was hard for me to get into at the time. I also need to do a deeper dive into Wayfarer.
Sometimes you need to hear something a few times for it to click.
"Air Not Meant For Us" is the best album of the year for me. I first heard about this band when you guys talked about it after the album release. I also really enjoyed "Exul" by Ne obliviscaris. Thanks for the hundreds of recommendations throughout the year!

Great list. Out of all year end lists this one resonates with me the most. Holocene would be my favourite album this year, and I don't see it getting any love in aoty lists.
This made our day. We pride ourselves in going with music that resonates with us personally and not just flaunting what everyone else wants to hear.
In my world death metal ruled supreme in 2023, I so I personally missed the likes of Alkaloid,, Cruciamentum and Tomb Mold on your top 10, but hey, you started out with Sulphur Aeon, and they DEFINITELY also made my top 10! 🤘 In the doom department, I would go with AHAB; what an album! 👌Fires in the Distance did not quite make my top 10, but I agree with all you said about their album; surprisingly good! ....and I have to give that Afterbirth album some more spins; it hasn't fully clicked with me yet, but I'm slowly getting there... 👍 Great job, guys! 😎

Lots of stuff came out this year and I absolutely loved a ton of it, but I think the only thing I actually absolutely love is the new Hulkoff that just dropped. Its weird and different and amazing! I havent been grabbed by a ton of metal lately and the only other album this year i truly loved was Trasnworld Identity - Seven Worlds, its prog rock that barely straddles the lines of metal but something about that album just gets me!

Meh sorry guys. I've only heard The Ocean Collective album once and I don't remember much from it. Maybe I'm basic but my favorites are Horrendous, Tomb Mold, Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Thantifaxath, Enforced, Raider, Cannibal Corpse, Blackbraid II, Enslaved, and Panopticon. Don't really feel like checking out your list because I already have so much music I've gotten into this year. Still great video!

My list (in no particular order) : Enslaved, Insomnium, Cattle D., Horrendous, Thantifaxath, Atavistia and Sulphur Aeon. Lots of amazing releases this year, but I found myself drifting back to these the most. Surprises of the year were Fires in the Distance, Crypta and the resurrection of American blackmetal with Panopticon, Wayfarer and Blackbraid, all blackmetal and yet their own sound, each with obvious great musicianschip.

Regarding the pushback on the Ocean - those guys are the most underrated metal band out there right now, I feel. Conceptually, musically, dynamically nobody is doing what they are.

Just had to come back an add that Genus Ordinis Dei - The Beginning just droped and holy fuck if it isnt a monstrous way to end the year! Only spun it a couple times but this could be my album of the year!
One of the drawbacks to our time line is that December we can't even get to before we record our end of year favorites. We are hoping that having a website we can update more frequently will allow us to work around that.

I've never really been able to get into anything doomy. Brave Murder Day I can spin maybe a half dozen times a year, but that's due to the fact that God himself is on vocals. But man that Fires in the Distance record is really something! Great album!! Cattle Decapitation easily has AOTY though holy shit that album blows my mind every listen! Also shout out to Frozen Soul Glacial Domination is a very fun listen 🔥

Air Not Meant for Us is my number 1 and there's not really a close 2nd.
My #2 probably has to be Director's Cut from To the Grave. I rarely listen to Deathcore, but this album crushes so fucking hard.
Also, The Ocean is one of my favorite bands of all time, but man I wish I liked Holocene more. I still enjoy it, just for some reason it doesn't hit me in the feels like their older ones.
Best EP goes, once again, to Insomnium, who have not written a great album in quite some time, but keep dropping the most insane EPs with 3-4 KILLER songs and ~20min playtime.
That EP is stellar man, so good. Insomnium never misses.
Hell yeah to Sulphur Aeon and Afterbirth! My number one album of the year is Evenfall of the Apocalypse by Ascended Dead. If you haven’t heard it, the best way I can describe it is, it’s like a blackened cosmic horror Morbid Angel album with some Inquisition-sounding buzzsaw riffs. Amazing project if you’re into that stuff, and their debut from 2017 is just as good.
