The Story of Morgana Le Fay (The Most Powerful Witch) - Harry Potter Explained

  • Hey everyone,
Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In this video, we’re going to be discussing one of the most powerful if not the MOST powerful witch in history. It’s not one of the Hogwarts founders, it’s not McGonagall, and it’s not Bellatrix - it’s none other than Morgana Le Fay.
Just recently, I made a video on Merlin - the most powerful wizard in history, so it felt wrong not to make one on the most powerful witch. Morgana, like Merlin, is a pseudo-historical figure, and in many of the different versions of folklore that she exists in, she is actually Merlin’s nemesis. And once again, like Merlin, Morgana existed in both Harry Potter folklore and our own folklore, which makes her a really interesting character to research. I love deep diving in to these unknown, albeit powerful figures that exist in folklore. There is so much mystique surrounding them, and it’s really fun for me to peel them back layer by layer.
I’m going to start by taking a look at the Morgana from our own folklore. First of all, Morgana isn’t just known as Morgana, in fact, she is known under many many alias’s, most of which are close variations of the name ‘Morgana’. However, the alias that most of us are probably most accustomed to is ‘Morgana Le Fay’ which means ‘Morgana the Fairy’.
She was a talented enchantress, and like Merlin, was prevalent in both Arthurian legend and Welsh poetry. The concept of ‘Morgana’ that we’re most familiar with first appears in writer Geoffrey of Monmouth’s work entitled ‘Vita Merlini’ or ‘The Life of Merlin’ which was written in 1150. Vita Merlini was a Latin poem written in 1,529 hexameter lines, and it tells the story of ‘Merlin’s madness, his life as a wild man of the woods, and his prophecies and conversations with his sister’. Though popular, Vita Merlini never matched the popularity of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae, published in 1136, which was a pseudo-historical account of British history that portrayed Merlin in a bit of a different light.
And while Morgana is first introduced in Vita Merlini, the story that I know her character best from once again circles back to the story of King Arthur, Merlin, and the nights of the round table. The story, which has been subject to copious adaptations over the years, tells the tale of King Arthur, his court, his kingdom, and his most trustworthy men. The Knights of the Round Table were a sub-order of the Knights of Camelot created by Arthur Pendragon, and they helped him fight dragons, evil-doers, and all sorts of other enemies.
In some adaptations of the story, Merlin and the Knights of Camelot even help Arthur to combat his own sister, Morgana Pendragon. In the works of Robert de Boron- Morgana is established as the youngest daughter of Arthur’s mother, Igraine, and her first husband, Gorlois. Arthur, who is the son of Igraine and Uther, is therefore Morgan’s half-brother.
And just like that- her character had been completely reintroduced. Where she was previously painted as a morally righteous healer with connections to the sea, and no familial relation to Arthur, Morgana suddenly became the ‘evil’ sister of Arthur intent on conquering camelot. This version of Morgana, who came to prominence through the works of Thomas Malory, was Arthur’s greatest enemy- constantly plotting to usurp his throne.
This version of Morgana is not just evil- but PURE evil, as her reasons for hating Arthur and his kingdom are never fully explained. She just seems to possess an extreme antipathy towards the perfect goodness which he symbolises. So, this evil antagonist, MORGANA - how powerful is she? How much of a threat did she pose? Well, given the fact that this representation of Morgana is said to rival MERLIN, the most powerful wizard of all time, I think that it’s a safe bet to say that Morgana was the most powerful WITCH of all time.

With that she gave birth to Mordred who Arthur never knew was his son and nephew but would earn a place among the round table till one day he kills Arthur, becoming infamously as the traitorous Black Knight. I think it's a very interesting observation that Morgana was good at Healing crafts. It's often understood that those who can heal, also have the duality to harm or rather, if you can give restore life, you also know how to take it.
Morgana could very well be a misunderstood or misdirected witch. So powerful but as she stood for something that wasn't a popular opinion, she was labeled as evil.
It was sort of played out that way when she first discovered she was Fae in Merlin the BBC series, whereby her intent was to stand up for the Fae but she slowly went darker.

I have a feeling that if she had a wand it would be made of hawthorn similar to Draco’s original wand. Hawthorn wand owners tend to have a duality in their nature as this wand is good for both curses and healing magic. The core would have been most likely from a Phoenix feather as its has the greatest range of magic to cast both curses and healing magic and favors fiercely independent individuals who are on a spiritual quest.

Morgana le Fay, and her myriad of morally ambiguous appearances, has long been a source of fascination to me. During college, I wrote fan fiction for the ABC's Once Upon a Time universe about a version of her that served as a bridge between the sides of light and dark, the only one on good terms with both the Dark One and the Charmings. She faced prejudice from birth as a child born out of wedlock and as a witch's child/a witch herself; she trained under Merlin (the first of that name) and had her first love taken from her by the Dark One when they were on the edge of death. Before the curse struck, she was training the original Merlin's great-great grandson, who had inherited the name, and had gone to be with her first love so he wouldn't be alone when the curse hit. (He had been turned into a merman as a result of his sacrifice to stay alive for Morgana, though he would no longer feel love for her or anyone else; she kept his emotional 'heart' safe in her chest, resulting in a certain emotional sensitivity that earned her the name "The Witch with Two Hearts".)
Getting to hear about where certain aspects associated with Morgana's character originated, and how they have adapted and changed through the centuries, brings back memories of reading Arthurian myth as a child and Spenser's Faerie Queene as a college student.

When you have great healing abilities you can choose to only use them for yourself ,or you can chose to use them to help others as well and improve the world. A lot of the dark magic users will only use them for selfish purposes. Maybe the concept is you decide how you use what gifts you have, which is why some of the characters with healing abilities contradict the trope.

It's an interesting coincidence that you bring up Morgana in close relation to both Merlin and Arthur. I say this because the most recent installment of the Netflix Original Series, Tales of Arcadia, which is subtitled Wizards, covers the same triangle, albeit, from a nuanced perspective related to the series. In this case, Merlin is Arthur's right-hand wizard, with an apprentice named Hisardoux. Morgana is the sister of Arthur, and the two are at odds with each other, as Arthur hates magical creatures, and Morgana champions them. This results in the two eventually locked in mortal combat after Morgana gives in to the dark magic at her call.

@RJ Slytherin personally taught Merlin, and I think that plays into the house’s duality of dark and light. Merlin whom was born of Demon and man, inherently born with darkness chose to pursue the light choosing to aim his relentless ambition to do good, Morgana whom was born of fae and man fell into despair and darkness. Conflicted with her own rightful claim to the throne of Camelot and her half-brother Arthur’s own mostly righteous but unstable rule. Arthur himself was probably a squib and was also probably a flawed even if ultimately good character. It’s a tragedy of the highest regard between all the characters involved.

Though surely the Morgana characterization that’s closest to my heart is ~ hands down ~ the one from the “The Mists of Avalon" novels by Marion Zimmer Bradley 🖤 she‘s wonderfully flawed, magical, powerful, intriguing and ambiguous as well (to a certain degree, of course). Actually this whole novel is a breath of fresh air in regards to the Arcturian legend because it is told by the perspective of the most important women of that time in Britain... Of course, it‘s still fantasy, but i absolutely love the amount of depth this predominantly female perspective have given us. Definitely worth checking out! I‘ve caught myself weeping reading this book wayy more times than i can count and it‘s exhilarating as hell! Also, there‘s the aspect of them being (in large measure) devotees/ priestesses of the Goddess and the Old Ways... The depiction of Pagan religion and the contrasts between pagananism and cristianity are wonderful to read and ponder. The rituals, the hierarchies, the mysteries, all of it... pheww, i guess that‘s that. ^-^

But my love of magic, and such started with my 5th grade teacher (I was about 10 I guess) reading The Hobbit to our class every day. He followed that with the entire Chronicles of Narnia. Of course he worked these into the curriculum. In our school he was one of two 5th grade teachers and the class stayed in one room with that same teacher all day. After a campaign by most of our parents and most of his students he became our 6th grade teacher. He did not read Tolkien trilogy to us as we’d hoped. We read it aloud in turns and had to write about motifs and all that deeper meaning crap. We’d been duped. Lol. He was the best teacher I ever had. I moved from California to Texas the summer between the end of elementary school (6th grade) to Texas. From that point on we ran from class to class and teachers taught one subject. This was all pre-computer of course, but they still managed to put me into classes where the next one would be at the opposite end of the campus. I actually ended up running track the next year! Lol.
You make some really great videos. Many thanks, And happy holidays with my very best wishes. JTI

It must vary with the wizards powers, but we see wizards use Muggle vehicules or Portkey to travel far distances, like Nobert on the boat, and also in the book one wizard kid mentions taking the plane to Brazil with his wizard father.
So surely there must me some kind of limit, wizards cannot apparate on the surface of the moon. My personal guess is between 500-1500km on average for apparition range, with it reducing the more people you take with you.

Not to mention that Newt took the boat to New York, and a port key to France. I personally think that apparition might be limited to within the country you’re currently in, seeing how magical folks often seem to use other means of traveling to go abroad

@@ReyOfLight About hte Portkey to France it was because he was forbidden by the Ministry to leave the country. My guess is that apparition can be controlled and watched like the Floo network by area spells (like around Great Britain) when Portkeys cannot

Yes, I knew all about Morgana Le Fay because she plays a part in a novel I wrote some years ago that I hope to get published some day soon. She is also known as a Goddess of War under certain traditions. Her ability to turn into a crow is heavily mentioned in the various stories.
The various movies about Merlin or King Arthur explain how she goes from good to evil. The miniseries "The Mists of Avalon" starring Juliana Maguliees is all about Morgana Le Fay.
    From Wikipedia
The Mists of Avalon is a 2001 television miniseries based on the 1983 novel of the same title by Marion Zimmer Bradley. Produced by American cable channel TNT, adapted by Gavin Scott, and directed by Uli Edel, the series is a retelling of the Arthurian legend with an emphasis on the perspectives of Morgan le Fay and other women of the tale. The first episode was the highest-rated original movie on basic cable in the summer of 2001.[1]

With the thumbnail having Hermione on it, I was waiting for it to be revealed that Morgana was an ancestor of Hermione (given that muggleborns are thought to be descended from squibs that marry muggles generations before the muggleborn's birth)
