So simple and so satisfying. It is always a good to see such a process that is directly connected to the basic principles of physics.
As an extruder manufacturer, I must say it's really helpful, sometimes we need to explain to customer how the extruder works, but it will be easy to understand if they look this.

It tells us the basic flow of material conveys, but copolymerization is a thing that needs to adjust many of the elements in a stable state. Basic elements include pressure, temperature, and time.

You can turn it off then set a time to heat again. You have to set 2 hours to run again for production.

You can turn it on again depending of the type of polymer that was in the screw and cylinder. Some low melting temperature material like PVC tend to burnt and you'll get more problems if trying to obtain a decent product

I have a small extruder and the entire barrel moves in a circular pattern maybe 1-2mm or so - which makes it very difficult to maintain tolerances on the product extruded. I thought it was due to a screw that was broken and repaired and assumed might not be 100% straight, but the same thing happens also with a new screw... what could be the cause? The motor and the gear box? A bent shaft that connects to the screw? Maybe the extruded not being level properly on a hard surface (it is on a wooden pallet)? A bent or worn out barrel?
Check the bearing. If you not have a bearing, then that will be the problem.
Basell corp has one. I rebuilt it.

Yeah that’s a mono screw design most likely used for compounded materials from my experience.
