    Gym shoes don’t need to be durable because lifting doesn’t wear on the shoes. I’ve had my medium priced Nike gym shoes for 8 years and in that time I have wore out at least 20 pairs of running shoes.

    • @orlog3343
      @orlog3343 Před rokem +35

      It’s probably also better to not have thick cushioning because that will just compress faster under the weight you lift

    • @popuppete
      @popuppete Před rokem +16

      I think that depends on what exercises you choose to do indoors. I do most my workouts at the gym, so that includes agility training, rope work and jogging. All of which can all wear down shoes.
      If you make an error in agility training you can easily tear the uppers if they don’t have some toe/heal cover.
      Sounds like you only lift inside and do other things outdoors so the durability wouldn’t matter much for you.

    I love my Xero HFS, for all the "bad" reasons you said lol. The upper is very breathable and the eyelet straps let you adjust the fit, the more you pull on them, the more secure the shoe is around your foot. I actually use my HFS without the insoles because I want the shoe to be super flexible and be the closest to the ground as possible. It was my first barefoot shoe, and once my feet gained enough strength I found them to be more comfortable than thicker shoes. I got some Lems boots after watching your video and while they're ok I can't feel the ground like I can with my Xeros. I think if I can feel the ground I can adjust how I stand and not feel tired, and to me that is very comfortable.

      I also take issue with the ratings for these to be gym shoes. Properties like stability and roll are not accounted for, and that was one of the things I hated about the lems and like about my HFS. The rubber on the lems doesn't create a flat, stable base.

    That was a strange video. The HFS are by far the most comfortable shoes here and possibly the most comfortable barefoot shoe ever made.
    Also these Vivos are the trail model (it's in the name). It's an offroad shoe with a tough sole and you're comparing it to the road shoe version from Xero.
    Either compare HFS to Primus Lite or Mesa Trail to this Primus trail. Even when you realized the HFS is the most flexible (which makes it awesome), you just disregarded it as "cheap".
    That's not the point. Barefoot shoes ARE MEANT to be flexible with a thin sole.
    Also you rate the Lems as "most comfortable", even though it's barely considered a barefoot shoe and many people dislike it because of the thick but unstable sole.
    Viewers would get the wrong impression from this video and possibly even disregard the HFS which is by far the best barefoot shoe in this lineup.
    The Lems is the least minimalist shoe here, the HFS the most minimalist with the best feel and the Primus Trails are a trail shoe not a road shoe..
    Overall I think you need to change your perspective and train your feet to properly utilize these shoes until you can review them properly.

    The idea behind barefoot shoes is that the natural pronation of your feet provides the cushioning as nature intended. The outsole and any minimal cushioning is just designed to provide a small amount of protection when moving on artificial surfaces like tarmac and pavements (seeing as we evolved to move over earth and through forests).

    • @michaeldoe4805
      @michaeldoe4805 Před rokem +1

      Most shoes (even so-called barefoot shoes) will not let the feet flatten upon impact. They claim to support your feet and squish them, but feet does not need side support, what it needs is freedom to collapse and flatten out upon landing. Landing on outside section and progressive flattening of the feet is your natural suspension, key to running barefoot.
      That is why anybody that switches to comparatively wider barefoot shoes experience their feet spreading.

    Please include a pair of Altra shoes sometime this month. They’re popular trail runners / hiking shoes, they’re sold at REI, and I think their manufacturing quality has decreased over the past few years. I’ve been lifting in vivo barefoot shoes and love them. I was originally going to use them for deadlifts but I also love them for squats (heeled weightlifting shoes just don’t suit my weird proportions well). The contact with the ground helps the cue of gripping the floor and keeping the weight over the middle of the foot as well as not smashing the lateral side of my foot. I was using Nike Metcon’s as my main all around gym shoe and socks for deadlift but the increased grip helps me feel more solid and the Metcons didn’t have much give but at higher weights you can feel it give a little. They seem like they’ll hold up well but it’s only been 3 months but I think I’ll be sticking with these for awhile.

    Would've made far more sense to include the infamous Vivo Primus Lites in this gym/running shoe comparison, instead of the much heavier-duty Vivo Primus Trails, which are meant for trail runs/hiking, and not the gym or flat roads. But you're forgiven, for being a little out of your element. :) FWIW, after almost 2 years and 1,000+ miles running in both, I enjoy my Xero HFS's and Vivo Primus Lites almost equally, but lean towards the HFSs due to better value and a snug sock-like fit.

    I bought some Joomra barefoot shoes off of Amazon a few weeks ago for 40 bucks. Honestly, I like them a lot. They're plenty comfortable for walking around the padded gym floor, I feel more grounded doing leg work, and they take up a lot less space in my gym bag. They're just cemented construction, but for 40 bones, I'm not mad about it.

      I went through all the barefoot shoes when they first came out over a decade ago. They all more or less work. But since I wear them all the time and I walk a couple of miles a day on concrete, they all wear out in 3 or 4 months. When Amazon started carrying the Joomra/Whitins/Aleader/etc. clones came out, I started buying them instead. They last the same 3 or 4 months, but cost about a quarter of the shoes marketed as minimalist. You do have to be careful with the sizing though. Be sure to read the comments about the exact model you are interested in.

    Also have 2 pairs of Altra, mostly for running and casual wear. They are phenomenal for these areas. I workout at home and usually with nothing at all on my feet. When I go inside a gym it's with 1 of these 4 and this will likely not change. No shoes in BJJ. Spend the money, the vivos are worth it.

    For what it's worth, I bought the exact Vivobarefoots that you reviewed in May and I was frankly disappointed with the durability over time. The outsole began to separate from the upper around the ball of the foot (after 3 weeks) although it hasn't progressed since then, the TPU paneling on the upper has a hole on both big toes (after 4 months), and just now I noticed that I've fully worn through the lugs on the ball of the feet. These shoes have since been marked down from the price I paid, but it is still a lot of money for what I got.
    Important to note that they use recycled rubber for the outsole, and while I've only taken one intro to material science course about polymers, I suspect that the rubber used is just not that durable compared to other products.
    All that aside, I'm glad you're doing these reviews this month! I recently began down the barefoot path and it's cool to see more recognition for something that is still such a niche market. I'm excited to hear your opinions about the high arch shoes next month!

    My favorite shoe for exercise-after wearing various vibram toe shoes for more than a decade (after transitioning in college)-is the vibram furoshiki wrap shoes with a pair of toe socks (the injinji ones are my fav for their build quality). Yes the furoshiki wrap shoes won’t work for sprinting because you’re foot will slid a little bit (in which case break out five fingers) but otherwise just ran a 15k & feel great 😊 My feet like other muscles can get sore as they strengthen but I haven’t had an injury in years (though if curious transition slowly over months/years because will need to get to running on midfoot with shorter stride & need to build up muscles since shoe cast isn’t doing the work.

    I've had those vivos for a year or so. They are decent, but I only use them for weightlifting because within the first month the glue on the outsole failed where your right foot is bending at 7:58. I think the fact that the outsole is cupped at that spot is partly why they failed, because when your foot bends the outsole is prying itself away from the upper. They should be stitched to the upper like the Tracker Decon Vivos in your previous barefoot video, as it would greatly improve the durability. Kind of disappointed for how much they were. I still like them, but less so since they were damaged.

    I have WHITIN’S from Amazon and they’re the most comfortable cheap shoe I’ve ever worn. For 40 bucks on sale they’re basically the only shoe I’ve worn that don’t smash my toes together. They’re reasonably durable and comfortable for being cheap and I recommend them sooo highly. The toe box is actually wide if you get the ones that say wide and if you’re apprehensive about getting into barefoot shoes because they all look like they’re flimsy and that doesn’t inspire you to want to spend 120 on shoes, then go for WHITIN’S they’re good.

    I own two different pairs of feelgrounds. You get the benefits of barefoot shoes without the weird styles that are on the market. Had them almost a year now and the soles under the balls of my toes are wearing quite a bit and the sides of the sole where my toes bend when walking are cracking. I’ve used them nearly everyday though and am honestly happy with them.

    I have to say I love road running in the Xero HFS compared to the stiffer Prio. All the negatives mentioned here like comfort and 'lack of protection' are positives for me. I want a thin sole that is barely there. Once I had a sharp nail or something puncture the sole and cause a small wound that healed in a few days, but otherwise I can run close to the ground with some protection.

    Xero is far superior to both Vivobarefoot and Lems. Vivo's hinge at the forefoot, slapping the ground and tend to squeek a lot (on 4 different pairs I've tried). Not a fan of the rather flat top area of their shoes like primus lite that fit too tightly for even average volume feet. Sold my pair of Primus Trail SG, as the sole hurt my feet, as it was too stiff and didn't let my feet flex like a barefoot shoe should. Returned a pair of Gobi boots, because both shoes made a very irritating loud squeek with every step. Lems soles are perhaps too thick to be considered barefoot, but are zero drop minimalist shoes for sure. Xero's look good, fit well and are a joy to wear. I originally got the HFS and was so impressed that I also got the Meso trail 1 & 2 and Zelen. Groundies are also very good and I have 5 pairs of them too. Probably would buy more if I could afford it. Very stylish, lovely fit and well made.
