Steam Powered Machine Shop 83: 32" Shaper Work

- Fuel, water and time were running out during the last days of the season before the shop was closed and winterized. I was able to complete a few operations on the new crosshead for the Liley steam engine that I've been rebuilding. The job seemed to lend itself well to the 32" G&E shaper in the front shop. Comments, questions and discussion of old machine shop work, steam power and line shaft power are always welcome here, thanks for watching..............Dave
I have been watching your channel for a long time. I enjoy old machinery that has been cared for. I have to tell you Dave, I had no idea you owned a classic aircraft and were a pilot too. What a wonderful surprise.
I love old tools and machinery as well and they dont get much older than this lol
This channel got me more into machining
HA! Who would've thought of that? Our old school machinist is an old school flyboy, too! Thanks for bringing us along for the ride, kind sir!
20:55 We all knew you were going to fly that plane. Thanks for not disappointing.
What a beautiful old bird! Congrats on keeping her looking and running so well.
Climbs like a home sick angel.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the ride. Prop starting the engine is no less safe than operating your machine shop. Always show it the respect it deserves, and everybody will get along just fine
How does one cool guy, get even cooler. He gets his airplane out. Beautiful airplane Dave.
Gday Dave, this was a total surprise, I never knew you had a plane and I don’t think I’ve ever heard you mention this before, the plan looks like it brand new, thanks very much for sharing more of your interests and thanks for taking us for a flight, cheers
David you are a man full of surprises! But I'm not entirely surprised that you're a pilot, too. What a I lovely little airplane you own. It truly is.
SWEET Little Plane! She just JUMPS into the air! What a JOY! Used to have my Private Pilot License, myself and LOVED to fly, but life got in the way..... Became an aircraft mechanic, but only got to fly occasionally, although I DID fly an F-18 once! But NOTHING beats a small plane!
That was awesome, a pleasant surprise switching from machining to aviation!
Thanks for sharing your beautiful aeroplane, absolutely great.
Kinda jonesing for my next steam shop fix here! I love this channel. Never gets old. The machines might be, and getting older, but this channel certainly isn't!
That was completely unexpected. US is really a wonderful country.
I really enjoy seeing the old G&L HBM in action. I own a 1942 model 25rt and its actually the main machine in my shop. I'd be in trouble without it.
Thanks for sharing your sweet plane Dave! Her engine is smooth as silk, but that doesn't surprise me in the least.
Thanks for sharing that ride along in your classic plane , I have to admit I didn't see that coming. It's great to see yet another aspect of your life and work . Thanks again 🙏
Well, it wasn't a "classic when I bought it, it sort of turned into one.........Dave
Thank you for a journey back to 1958 when I was learning to fly!!!
Keep up the good work!
JIM 🥰
Blimey Dave, a pilot as well, no end to your talents! That is one beautiful aircraft and the engine sounds sweet as a nut. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Cheers, Alan.
Thanks for sharing that beautiful airplane!......
What a wonderful bonus to a very enjoyable video. I have actually turned green. Thank you.
What a beautiful plane that was definitely a surprise! At the hanger into I thought it was a commercial for a second
What an unexpected treat!
and thank You for taking us along Capt. It was very much appreciated.
As others have said, What a pleasant surprise! I owned and flew a 1965 Cherokee 140 for more than 30 years. It got sold and continues to soldier on but I now have a 1949 Aeronca Champ hanging in the rafters and in need of rebuilding. Seeing your Chief just about made me run to the shop and get my arse in gear.
Here’s an interesting fact. I am a helicopter AME and was working in India in the early 80s based out of the Madras(now Chennai) flying club and they used Hindustan Aviation manufactured, Chiefs which they called the Pushpak which was the Mythical vehicle (magic carpet) of Lord Vishnu. I had the great pleasure of going for a few circuits in one with a very progressive young lady, private pilot. By the time I got approval to do some flying there, Indian bureaucracy being what it is, the job finished and I had to go home to Canada. Pleasant memories, none the less.
Thanks for sharing the Chief with us Dave.
Jay, Here's an interesting thing about a Cherokee 140. My trainer was a 64 Cherokee 140 (first year for them), and got my license with it. The tail No. was N6003W. 6001W was a prototype, 6002 was something of the factory and 6003W was the first 140 offered to the general public and was given away on the "Price is Right" show. The log showed where it was partly dismantled to get it in the studio. It had thousands of hours on it before a student finally wrecked it. They flew great and were rugged but hard to see out of.....Dave
@@davidrichards5594 I bet it had no toe brakes, like my 65. The old ones were better, in my opinion. They had less junk in them. Mine weighed 135 lbs. less, empty than another mid 70s one that I flew and it was much nicer to fly.
Nice plane It looked like a ten foot take off run . My dad had a Cessna 120 and he used to have me hold the brakes when he prop started it brought back memories. I bet you have a race bike tucked away somewhere too.
Man it there no end to your talents and interests - I really hope some younger men are following this you make an amazing role model for what a bloke should be - put your hand to anything and nothing mechanical is unobtainable - many respects.
Neat plane. Thanks for sharing
Yet another string to your bow Dave. Lovely plane. Just knew you wasn't going to settle for just running up the engine.
Watched for a steam powered video and got a bonus flight video. Thank you sir for all the enrichment of knowledge.
What a sweet plane! Thanks for showing us this part of your life Dave. I live on the Whetstone Airpark in Arizona (but I'm not a pilot). A couple of my neighbors fly vintage planes out of here.
Dave, You Sir are one talented man. Your hobbies/work are amazing. Thank You for sharing with us.
Not what I expected when I clicked on this video. Very pleasantly surprised. Great preservation of a classic airplane. Hit home with my love of flying. Maybe some day I’ll own one too!
Thanks, I hope you will subscribe and be a regular commenter here....Dave
I remember watching these machines when I worked in factories 60 years ago, I found them hypnotic then, and still do, fantastic machine. Thanks for sharing and regards from across the pond
Beautiful plane Dave it must be a joy to fly, but also a steam powered machinery shop to keep you grounded. Hard work and persistence always brings rewards in life head down arse up ,have a day mate Australia.
Thanks Les, Great to hear from AU........Dave
Dave your a man of many accomplishments. Thanks for sharing another with us.
I was expecting to see you chucking some wood in that plane to get it started.
You are a wealth of surprise’s! I never would have pegged you as a aeronautical type of guy! I personally hate heights, unless there is something mechanical involved. Keep sharing your secrets, we all enjoy it.
Nice David, I did not know you were a pilot and aircraft owner. Your Aronica is beautiful. I am a pilot and an A&P. Not an aircraft owner any more. Thanks for the quick flight around the patch. 😃😃😃😃
Hi Randy, I don't fly to much any more. I don't know why I keep the Aeronca , guess it's like an old dog......Dave
@@davidrichards5594 We had a Cherokee 180, my wife and I love flying. Yep hard to part with.
I love your chief. I have a 46 Cessna 140 I keep at Dansville. Like you, I have now owned the plane the longest. It's been in the Rochester area its entire life and have talked to two of the former owners'sons. Tail draggers are the most fun. Yours is beautiful.
Hi Joe, Is anyone flying much at Dansville? There are a lot of airplanes based at TriCities, the hangars are full, but nobody flying much, hardly ever a soul around.....Dave
@@davidrichards5594 Hi Dave. I thought your field looked like TriCities. I have in-laws in Owego. The hangers are mostly full at KDSV and in nice weather we get some activity. With McDonald's across the street from the FBO a lot of people stop in for coffee. But like you said in the video I don't get up as much as I should. I put my 140 together from a pile of parts then got my ticket in it. It's painted white and red similar to yours!
Hello Dave your a man with many talent’s thanks for sharing look forward to your next post
Great little plane... Can't wait for the landing.
Can't beat an old plane ride to clear your head. Very nice tail dragger Dave, thanks for sharing the ride. Looking forward to seeing more. Regards ....
EXTRA LIKE DAVE. Thanks for sharing the moment in your life.
Thx for the surprise ride in your very nice aero machine.
What a beautiful, well original preserved airplane. I love it, congratulations 🕊
Dave, you are the gift that keeps on giving! Next we assume you will be racing a car! Thanks for yet another great addition to your channel.
BTW my wife will say "What are you watching now"? Once she sees you fly, she'll be hooked. She and her father worked their entire careers in aviation. Thanks again
Hi Dave, what a surprise you fly too. All I can say, I am envious, I had a chance to fly with a friend a couple of times, back in my early days. But it wasn't in the plans at the time. Now I am to old and tired.👍
I recently sold a G&E 24 inch shaper to a friend. Didn't use it enough to justify the space it took up. One thing I read in the owners manual is after starting the motor to let it run without moving anything for 2 minutes. This is to allow oil to circulate throughout the machine and to properly lubricate everything in them.
Love the chief as I'm also a tube and rag plane owner however mine is slightly faster as it's a 1974 Bellanca Super Viking with the IO-520 300hp engine. This next February will be 10 years I've owner her and love every time I fly her.
Very cool nothing better than taking a day and doing what you enjoy. thanks Dave
sweet ride . . . pretty old bird.
[ was waiting for you to say "i can see my house from here" ]
Don't know why I was suprised you owned a plane. I was driving home from working on a pipeline last week and found a 46 chief in a cow pasture, actually looked pretty good.
Thank you for the post. Always a pleasure. What an interesting guy.
You sure are an amazing man David!
Another reason why I wait (patiently) for your videos and this one did not disappoint. Thank you as always for sharing.
Neat! There was a single Chief who made it to the Ranger TX fly-in this past October 1st. Every day you get to see or fly in a no-nonsense pre-1950 aircraft is a good day
Awesome job as usual & loved the watching you fly the aircraft & walk around & explaining the instruments, operations, etc.
Gosh Dave , You are a man of many talents hard work and dedication sure pays off
Also had no idea you were a pilot ,the plane looks like it just out of the factory just like the rest of your equipment in the shop.thanks
For the ride see you at the steam show.Mike McEwen
Well now we know how you get to Florida and back! Lol years ago, my father in-law tried to get me interested in an Ercoupe he had, but I was more interested in stockcars and figured if I was gonna put my money into something it was going to be those! Lol I wasted a lot of money back in those days, but had a lot of fun too.
in all honesty, I’d like to have that airplane now. Thanks for sharing Dave you’re a man of mystery indeed! Lol.
Ercoupe is a very impressive airplane for a lot of reasons, ahead of it's time, always liked them......Dave
Dave that was a pleasant surprise , thank you for taking us along with you in that beautiful A Chief. A friend of mine had one also , we called him flat turn Eddie. 🤣🤣 Ronnie in Clifton Colorado
Wow Dave…..
We must be cut from the same metal…. I graduated with an aeronautical engineering degree years back. Fabric and wood were still important to service these old planes. Your plane is just lovely. And NO glass cockpit… when flying was a skill. And hand propping it….that brought tears to my eyes. It’s been a while.
That's one beautiful old plane Dave
Dave, what an absolutely fantastic and fascinating video! I had no idea you flew. I could watch a whole 40 minutes of the flying process. That engine sounds great! Awesome!
What a BEAUTIFUL Aeronca! That engine noise was absolutely purring! Thanks for sharing a short flight - would love to see more!
Wow! Beautiful aircraft 👍
What a beautiful plane Dave!!! Thank you so much for sharing it with all of us! Enjoy your time down south...
Would never guessed and thanks for taking us up for a short hop🤗😎🤗😎
What a nice surprise!
Nice that 1940’s era planes have a predictable safety with mature design of the A&P.
Thanks for the ride man!
Dave, I remember coming across your first two videos while laid up after a knee surgery. They really helped beat away the cabin fever. I've watched all 83 now, and continue to learn from and enjoy the last ones every bit as much as the first. Keep up the fantastic work. P.S. I'm sure there are a lot of others that would love to see some more of that Aeronca, that's a beautiful old bird you have.
You certainly are a member of this channel fraternity. 83 videos works out to over two days of watching..The Aeronca will be out again next spring.....Dave
I was part owner of a Chief for a while. I learned to land a taildragger in it and also how to hand prop the engine. That's a rare skill anymore. I was flying it with the windows open and one piece of plex cracked and let the window pop out and hit the horizontal stabilizer. Scared the crap out of me! Thanks for the memories.
I've flown it with the doors off a couple times for a photo shoot. It gets pretty "airy" in a slip....Dave
Very very neat Dave!! Thanks
My father flew an Aeronica after the war. Never knew what one looked like until now! Thanks!
Love the Channel ........Merry Christmas from the UK
You are full of tricks. Thanks for the videos.
What a beautiful little airplane! I love the original appearance and just basic cockpit! And it sounds great. I'm a retired pilot. I flew for over 30 years before becoming disabled and unable to pass a medical. Lord I miss flying! You made my day.
Hi John, You know, "Light Sport" Category might be something to think about. The Chief makes it with a gross weight of 1350#. You don't need a medical.......Dave
@@davidrichards5594 I hear you Brother, but so far my wife isn't convinced.
Have been looking forward to your next episode but this one is a real surprise. Happy Christmas Dave
GREAT I love the flying segment... I knew you were gonna... Just sayin'.
Love the thrill of feeling the tail lift off the runway.
And an aviator too! Wow what a special treat this episode was. Beautiful airplane. Thanks for the ride along.
Wow, very cool surprise indeed.
Really enjoyed seeing your airplane. Love the simplicity.
Love the plane Dave. Nice to see you
Love the Aeronca segway!! Thanks for sharing Dave!
The precision that is required in the machining world is mind boggling for me. Amazing work.!
Very Cool...., Dave. Thanks for sharing.
Russ
I love the hand painted operating zones and redlines on the gauges.
Wow nice airplane and a great pilot!
Nice air plane have a great day
Nice little plane David. I half expected it to be steam powered😁
What a surprise to end You 2022 season David . Nice to see shaper work in these modern times.
Is there no end to Your skills ? Lovely little aircraft , a credit to You .
I Hope You're keeping warm down south as it's freezing in East Anglia U.K. !
I'm sitting here in Ohio, it's 5 degrees outside and I never thought I'd get to go for an airplane ride. Fantastic!
That was a fun flight and thanks much for letting us ride along. The engine ran VERY smooth for a cold start.
Thanks for another interesting video.
I love small planes, thanks Dave for getting us high.
Beautiful country - Thanks for sharing
Dave you are an awesome bag full of surprises. Wonderful.
Awesome thanks for the plane ride 👍
Most enjoyable. Thanks for the ride!
Outstanding. Thanks, Dave!
A few years ago I picked up a set of calipers like that Starrett, but Mitutoyo from a used tool place, beautiful condition for $100, they have come in handy number of times. Edit: Guess I should have watched all the way through before commenting, what a treat! Didn't realize you were an airplane guy. I have been thinking real hard about getting current again after 20 or so years of not flying.
