  • Sean's 1988 BMW 325is was leaking coolant out of the water pump gasket. After about a week, it became a steady leak with noticeable puddling. We decided to perform a water pump and timing belt replacement with minimal tools, on the curb in front of his house.
A timing belt and water pump replacement can be done for 1/3 the price with these links and your hard work.
The parts we needed can be found here.
    ContiTech Timing Belt Kit
    amzn.to/2kCAkYt
    Water Pump Kit
    amzn.to/2lSO57s
    Genuine BMW Antifreeze/Coolant
    amzn.to/2kC6BPA
    Bentley Service Manual
    amzn.to/2lWP31q
    Or
    Haynes Service Manual
    amzn.to/2kClRfh
When completing a full tune up on your 325i, here are some other things you may need to replace some ignition system parts, depending on your cars service history. These 4 Bosch parts can be replaced for less than only the OEM BMW ignition wires. Doing this work yourself with these parts would save you more than 75% on the service.
    Bosch Ignition Rotor
    amzn.to/2lWNCjB
    Bosch Distributor Cap
    amzn.to/2kWBEJk
    Bosch Spark Plug Wire
    amzn.to/2kCul6e
    Bosch Super Plus Spark Plugs
    amzn.to/2kCw6Am
I own a 1987 325e. Keep in mind, if you have a 325e, some of these products will be different for the different models. Follow a link, then find the vehicle fitment selector toward the top of the page. Select the exact vehicle that you own.
    THANKS AGAIN AND GOOD LUCK!!!

Good job guys! Just some minor critiques, maybe explain what you guys are undoing or removing and what it does as you remove it. I liked the annotations you guys added for clarification. Thanks for the good content!

If we knew why, we would say! Just wanted to show that you don’t have to be a technician to do the work with the right instructions. I think that being Tim is or not finding good instructions is a main reason why people don’t get fun old cars. First time doing a timing belt and water pump!

Great video! Quick tip: remove the Air filter housing in the beginning. It takes literally a minute or two, and it opens up a lot of working space on that side of the engine bay. Cheers!

Thanks man! We enjoyed learning a lot of what to do and not to do with this project. The big air box coming out will definitely be high on the list next time!

Nice Vid.......Thanks for posting.................I have not had the pleasure of doing a T belt yet but will in the near future. I have been told to remove spark plugs and the engine will rotate easier - while they are out you might as will change them and do valve adjustment and replace the valve cover gasket.

Yes this is true! Thanks for the feedback MrCukoobox! Most of the spark plugs were relatively fresh. The priority here was to fix the water pump leaking issue. But we will be doing a similar video on my 325es soon!

How long did the repair take from hood open to close? Appreciate the video! Will be digging into my IX over next weekend!

This is how one of my best friends and I get along when we're working on one of our BMW's. It's about having fun, sharing an adventure, and well, drinking plenty of beer. Honestly, I have to keep my nerves lubricated, or something is going to meet the working end of a hammer.Just bought a 91 325i, and it has over eight years on the timing belt and water pump. Jeez, I don't know how it's made it this far. My other Bimmers are M30 and M54 powered so I haven't known the delights of timing belt maintenance. Guess I'll need to restock the beer fridge.

Pelican parts had instructions for just about any job on an E30. Also, the Bentley Service manual they have on there site is AMAZING as a resource. If we had that, we would’ve been more prepared.

No need to take the plugs off, just get the entire cap off.
