    I feel like bringing on your girlfriend as part of the business is equally as dangerous as buying a house with a girlfriend... What happens when you break up?

    A lady in our group married a senior executive at our big company(global). Our skills are VERY specific to our program/site. It was amazing how everytime he got promoted/reassigned to a different site/state, she was able to follow him all over the US for 15 years (or was approved to work remotely).

    There is a reason that nepotism at a company creates resentment and is generally a really bad idea, its because most of the time, regardless of how "qualified" the hirer feels their nepo hire is, they are not, they take advantage, most times are not qualified, are shown favoritism, create friction, have a holier than thou attitude etc...many times in a big, big way...and most workers know this, have had this as their experience, while the hirer is blind to it, it is a really bad idea for a company. I have worked for a few family run companies with way too many family members taking from but not contributing to the pie, bad business and the amount of fighting and unprofessionalism was unreal.

    I realize it’s way easier to say than do, but if you’re working somewhere that can’t or won’t promote you then it’s time to move on. But often times that not easy or might be nearly impossible. Best thing to do then is be in a financial position for the day you can walk off the job when it hurts them the most.

    Yes with a capital YES. No nepotism. It causes more problems than it’s worth.

      Some people don’t care about getting married and that’s fine. Ricky gervaus has been with his partner for over 40 years and they’ve never married for example. And being married to someone for that long in show biz is probably quite rare.

      @@Drenwickification But you bet he uses the term wife and viceversa, when they are not.

      Being together for so long without being married is a sign of a very strong relationship. She's not having one foot out the door, because if she had, she would be gone by now. This relationship probably is better than the average marriage of 9 years, when you don't know if people are still in because of the quality of the relationship or just because they are married.
      I'm in Europe and here it's getting more and more uncommon to get married. I'm 45 and I hardly know anyone in my group of friends and family who got married. And the ones that did all got divorced by now. Most of the people in long term relationships without marriage are still together.
      My brother and his girlfriend are together for over 20 years now. They have two kids. When they wanted to buy a house they got a registered partnership so that they could buy together. That registered partnership is on better terms than the average marriage, when the 'special day' often overshadows things like prenups. By not being married you can keep the romance and the legal stuff separated and most of the time that turns out much better than a marriage.
      I don't really understand why it apparently is so hard in the US to manage the legal aspects of a relationship without getting married. It basically forces you to get married. It sounds backwards to me.

    9 years? And he's annoyed that her parents don't see their daughter as his "girlfriend" as the same thing as if she was his "wife." People Have so many commitment, issues and weird ideas about marriage these days. For real, paint or get off the ladder. In other words, marry her, or break up.

    I personally see right through all these corporate bullshit. Company mission statements, pep talks, nepo/crony hires. It's super obvious, if it works on most employees then sure. But I've always seen right through it.

    • @KarlDag
      @KarlDag Před 4 měsíci +1

      See what?
      If the new hire isn't qualified, sure, that's crappy nepotism. But if the employees don't have the stuff to climb the ladder and the new hire is qualified, then why not? Peter's principle is a real thing, and it needs to be avoided.

    • @oshkoshbegone
      @oshkoshbegone Před 4 měsíci +3

      @KarlDag see through speeches and the veil of fake gratitude. I'm mostly speaking about medium to large corporations. Gratitude and valuing employees is done through actions.
      Trying to not come off to your employees as unqualified nepo hire Is impossible. People just have to get over it. That's how business works

    Never ever, EVER bring a GF into your business! You and your business will SUFFER beyond your wildest dreams! If you have been with her for 9 years and haven't married her there is a reason, now you think it's a good idea to drag her into the business? WTH Dude! Put down the crack pipe and step into reality!

    My daughter works for the small business that my wife works for. My wife is two levels above my daughter, but she did not interview or hire her. It's working out great!!

      Yeah sometimes it just works out so well, I worked with my mom for a while she didn’t hire me I just started working during my free time and I ended up spending time there like I would a 9-5. I was definitely respected and I respected whoever respected me, just because my mother owned the business didn’t mean I did anything I wanted and it didn’t mean I was family so I was on her level. I just worked hard, did what I had to do to keep the business moving.

    Adding family to a business Is okay as long as they, like dave said, work incredibly hard and honour the team.
    It's not easy to pull off but it can be done.
    Adding a girlfriend? Now you're just asking for trouble. If the two of you just randomly break up it's going to be hell on Earth for the company. Dude freaking 9 years.
    I can't imagine being with somebody 9 years and be willing to make them the COO of my company but not marry them lol. This guy is asking for disaster
