This was honestly my favorite Midnight Club game. In my opinion it was the most challenging with the most interesting race routes. Learning to dodge traffic and learning the best routes made every win feel like I really managed to overcome something. The characters' taunting, the high speeds, and the enemy drivers really add to the pressure. It gets really frustrating but that makes it all the more satisfying when you win.
I kind of missed the characters having voices in MC3. The taunting and chatter added personality, but also made it feel good whenever you shut them up by finally beating them.
    Also, motorbikes are overpowered.

About the motorbikes, you are 110% correct with that statement. Although i don't really like the Monsoni. The thing is way too heavy, and it has slow and bulky handling. Overall not fun to ride. The L.A. and Tokyo bikes are good though (I forgot the names).

True. Midnight Club (especially LA) was always one of my fav racers, just because you have to start as a noob with bad cars and slowly, with effort, you would get better and better. Almost like a racer-RPG. It's hard but never really unfair, the tracks are fun... damn, just gimme a MC:LA for the PS4 with even more content. I would love it.

Midnight Club always had a dope soundtrack and very fast gameplay, the checkpoint system is so much more dope than Underground series where you had fuckin walls for each track making racing repetitive after a while. And the city felt much more live in MC series, with pedestrians and all that. Meanwhile Underground you'd be driving in a dead ass city with some minimal traffic bothering you from time to time.

Midnight Club doesn't hold a candle to Underground, the worst thing about this game is that the game mode with random checkpoint scattered in the area is not skill based, it's just trial and error, and i personally hate games that use trial and error at such a degree. I got to Tokyo and then gave up, it wasn't that enjoyable for me, and when Underground 1 came out, i finished it a couple of times.

The soundtrack in this game is one of the huge selling point imo. It gets your adrenaline pumping like no other. Especially in a racing game as fast paced and intense as this one.
Compared to the other Midnight Club games in the series, one of the things that I liked in this one is that the 3 cities featured in this game has totally different vibe and feelings to one another. Unlike MC3 which did feature other cities, but they all felt the same. From the slower paced Los Angeles to the batshit crazy and intense Tokyo. The pace in this game jumps drastically as you progress, with appropriate genre of osts in different cities matching the progression. I liked this very much and its something no other Midnight Club game or even other racing games has achieved for me.

    • @hanzo7616
      @hanzo7616 Před 4 lety +12

They literally made this game like a drug lol. Short cutscenes but enough to make you appreciate having a bigger purpose to the game than just racing, high speed racing, traffic coming from directions you can't see, big jumps, crazy fast nitrous, electro music to do your head in and if you fuck up, well, the game has a restart button that puts you back in action immediately. This game just doesn't quit bruhh

It's a game clearly focused on the gameplay, on the racing, in an intense, fun and unique way, rather than a cool, hardcore or realistic one. It provides ridiculously fun physics with a rather enjoyable story and a cool multiplayer mode which... RIPs for most of us.

I can still hear Hector’s chicano voice instigating me; Tre Little’s Put Your Top Down playing faintly in the background while I follow homeboy to the race all to see the cops surround us and we having to make a run for it in a stormy midnight. That shits engraved into the back of my mind lol

I always loved midnight club 2 and it will stay the best game I ever played. the cool atmosphere, the unrealistic but yet enjoyable driving physics, and the early 2000s techno music combined with various opponents you have to face during your run made the game a masterpiece to be honest, it made you feel like you are actually participating in illegal races with notorious drivers all around the world and each time you beat an opponent you look forward to discovering what is next, what is the car you have to acquire and who is the next racer and his background. You beat them one by one until you meet the world champion, that moment when you feel you are ACTUALLY challenging a real racing world champion, not some easy typical AI.
and then it comes the last checkpoint of the final race against Savo, that moment when you realize it is pretty much your first start point to the whole game, and then when you cross it you feel sad because the game is over but happy because you feel you accomplished something after some real hard work, and proved yourself to be a real professional driver. Another note that is worth to be mentioned is that the girl at the beginning of the start line of the last race is exactly the same one from the first ever race against Moses...
MC2 will always stay in my heart, #LetsKeepMC2Alive

I found Driver Parallel lines to be kinda boring. The cops are super easy to loose in '78 but stick to your tail like mad in '06. The later would be great if they didn't all have shotguns! Driver 1, 2, and 3 did it a lot better with the cops just trying to ram you.

@@scottthewaterwarrior I don't recall having too much trouble handling bikes in DPL. I just loved the Harley sound of the choppers. In this one they were much tougher to handle. Not because of the bike but because of the race layouts.
I skipped MC3 but I did buy MC LosAngeles for PS3. The bikes handled perfect there. I even got through the entire game on a bike. I think there were only 3. One of them was the Ducati Monster and another the Kawasaki ZX. Which was ridiculous OP.

Fun fact: Midnight Club II is the only game in the franchise to have a PC release. Surprisingly, it still works on Windows 10, complete with widescreen options. Hell, I don't give a damn about the soundtrack, despite I got my own mixtape with some rock, Synthwave, Japanese City Pop, and Metal Gear Rising's soundtrack in the mix.
One thing I criticize was the bikes can be a bitch to master. Directly quoting from GrandTheftAero's Midnight Club documentary: It's a High Risk = High Reward kind of ordeal. Yes, it's also quite frustrating, but more visceral than Stuntman if you've ever play that.

This is one of my favourite games in my childhood. I remember when i saw the first screenshots in a magazine, i was blown away. At this time, the only racing game i owned was Midtown Madness2. I loved the foggy style and idk why but i was totally impressed by the street lights. The following month i got a demo of the game, but unfortunally my pc was to weak to run the game. But i was so in love with it, that i just enjoyed the menu, espacially the background Music of it. Every morning when i was getting up and preparing for school i started the demo, just to listen to the menu music. A while later i upgraded my pc and was finally able to play the game, and listen to its outstanding soundtrack. Still today, 18 years later, i have an mp3 of the menu music on my pc and let it frequently run, relax and get nostalgic.

Somebody gifted me this game back in the days and I really enjoyed it playing on my pc... The two wheel drive was really lit for me and kind of mastered this technique... Being said that the races where they got random checkpoints and you have to choose the best way to win them was really frustrating for me but later as I played the game remembering shortcuts in a map become easy and I started dominating... I really started to love this game and after watching your review just made me to reinstall it and play... ✌️

I started playing MC2 two days ago on my PC using an XB1 controller with a PS2 emulator and I swear this is harder than it was on PS2 but this is honestly a very fun, but very hard game.
I was always passionate and lived my childhood playing through MC3DER, hours just customising cars, and from time to time I'd change over to MC2 and it was a lot harder to say the least. In fact I've never finished it.
As a young kid, the trance began a love that carries on today and so did thr car styles and whatever else, it's highly influenced my life.
Over these past two days though I have, like many people gotten stuck on Tokyo, Ricky's second race to be specific. I thought it was harsh filling the previous race in the bus depot BLOCKED with like 16 buses and ruining the run then and there.
Paris was pretty challenging at times and sent me into a few frustrations and bringing me back to the raised voices, with more swearing, and I haven't felt like this in a lonnnnnng time with games.
But yeah... that is the weird thing about this game is you just want to finish it.
Unfortunately it doesn't feel rewarding anymore, unlike MC3 where you'd unlock a whole class of cars but in MC2 even if it's a favourite song and it really suits the environment, well you either get that one song or music off which is annoying.
Like I'd persist so hard and go over a race so many times that when I finally beat a racer and win their car it didn't feel like the pain was worth it unlike MC3 when you see that screen freeze for a split second and then the car key icon appears after winning a race (usually after a tournament) and that was the thrilling brain chemistry release. MC2 just doesn't do that unfortunately and racing doesn't feel worth it.
Tokyo in the DUB Edition Remix is a breath of fresh air compared to the walled up nightmare that Tokyo was, which I found quite disappointing when comparing the two.
Like in the fish market and wharf there's so many boxes and containers to navigate around in MC3 you just don't have those obstacles and floor the nitrous up the ramp. The cut outs in corners of buildings are a lot more forgiving in the north west side of the map, like there's not one large support but many pylons to crash into and ruin the race. Not to mention the buses and traffic, I swear are planted to really fuck up the run. Sometimes they are in 3 but this is ruthless.
In my head from memory I loved the game and the music but now that I'm putting in thr hard yards and not just the cheat code howhardcanitbe0, I'm really seeing how brutal and unforgiving this game is.
Possibly due to the emulator but when I turn pushing the analog stick all the way to the side, sometimes the car barely turns and refuses to go into a powerslide, making a race even more infuriating. I know in the pause menu I cannot scroll down and can only scroll up, and in air controls do not work when wanting to roll the car backwards, so a car will only nose dive.
However cruising around in MC2 is fun because the feel and aesthetic without the pain, it's still a fun game to drive in... especially when you get more than one song to listen to

Midnight Club 2 is the Racing Game I grew up playing, it holds a special place in my heart. The Difficulty is what makes it great in my oppinion, it doesn't get boring. You can win any race in any car if you're good enough, but if you're not good you'll loose no matter what car you have. Soundtrack is perfect for the type of game. Only thing i somewhat miss is the costumization options, but I'll overlook that gladly for the more rewarding and more difficult gameplay compared to NFS
