When I bought and played this game (for countless hours) I didn't think about the graphics ONCE. This game was an endless source of replayable fun. Running around the map was worth it.

At the time of release (2004), and considering the size of the platform, the cutscenes, the AI of NPCs, these graphics are boss af.. Other than The Getaway, this is the best looking open world game of the PS2 era...
Nah, the graphics were pretty bad even for the time. The models looked weird and the shadows and lighting looks kind of flat. It's the sheer amount of stuff on screen that is impressive, you quickly forget about the graphics.
Just play the 360 version.
This wasn’t a game, it was an experience. Considering it was made in 2004, nothing else has ever come close

The amount of effort, detail and love that went into creating this game is staggering. GTA San Andreas will still be played by future generations when all of us are long dead and gone.

Not only is this the best GTA, it is also my #1 favorite game of all time. I got this game back in early 2005 and being in my late teens, it blew me away. I'm 30 now and STILL play it. That's how good it is. My new tie for #1 is BotW.

My favorite part in the game is during one of the heist missions cutscenes where CJ walks out the planing room and turns off the light and woozie just stands there. Priceless.

That's because SA has 3 cities with their distinct "personalities". Although one thing that I found disappointing about GTA SA's world was the military bases. Gta V and even gta vice city had soldiers guarding their bases. In Sa,however the military bases are guarded by the FBI and police.
Simplicity is something that can be desired at times.

+ColourShedProductions You're wrong Rockstar didn't disable the Sex minigame due to bad taste, they did it because they wanted a M 17+ rating rather then Ao 18+ rating. Since a Mature 17+ rating should mean more revenue at least in the US due to all being available in all stores rather than some stores barring sale, which shouldn't really be a thing anyway but that's another story.

One thing that has always impressed me about this game, ever now 14 years later, is the incredible attention to detail Rockstar put into this.
This was definitely their love child of the era, and I still can't fathom how they created such a detailed and immersive world on the PlayStation-freaking-2!
I just finished playing GTA V and I have to say, apart from graphics, GTA SA was better in every single way.
Simple; they wanted to upset PC gamers with the single greatest game ever being made with the PS2's limitations in mind instead of PC's near limitless power.

Compare that with GTA V where the only buildings you can enter are very specific shops and properties.
GTA San Andreas deliberately did NOT output the max graphics it could, and focused more on gameplay.
But lately Rockstar and most big companies,
completely max out the graphics to the last drop they can squeeze out of the game,
they also max out draw distance and size of map,
at the expense of everything else.
RDR 2 is a game that came out in 2018 AD , and it consistently falls below 20 fps in lots of places, for crying out loud.

But even in PC, when you choose lower graphics that doesnt create content which could utilise the spare processing power.
It just increases framerate, up to a certain point.
When a game is designed for PC, they target certain system capabilities (hence minimum and recommended specs).
Those finite specs , they choose to use in the way that they do.
If I want my game to be able to play on a 1080, I will have to go by 1080s limitations.
If 1080 can render 1.000 polygons at a time, and I want one character and some buildings in the game,
I can have a character with 200 polygons, and 10 buildings of 80 polygons each = 1.000
or a character with 500 polygons , and 10 buildings with 50 polygons each = 1.000
and so on.
Another factor is drawing distance.
The more buildings have interior that is interactive and well designed,
the less good they will look on the outside and the less drawing distance you will have.
Everything is connected, and to gain something you have to sacrifise something else.
When GTA V came out everyone was talking about how far you can see, how high you can fly ( drawing distances) , how big the map is and how beautiful the graphics.
Thats because the developers focused on those aspects.
If they focused more on things being interactive (like being able to enter more buildings , having more mini activities, more things being interactive/ destructable) have no doubt that people would be praising that.

Mr Beckegruvan SA is the best in the entire series IMO. GTA 3 is the most revolutionary, VC is the most memorable, IV roughed out all the edges and V lived up to the hype (sort of). But again, SA did everything right and then some; even doing more than V in most places.

I've played GTA San Andreas probably the most hours of any game I've played, around 300 hours I think? I've played it on PS2, PC, Xbox and even Xbox 360. I love everything about it, story, freedom, music, variety... Too much fun and still my favorite GTA.
how come you haven't played the mobile version yet? it makes the game look so much better you just have to get used to the on screen controls that is if you don't have a controller to use with your tablet
I DESPISE THE MOBILE VERSION. Really, it sucks. On my Honor 8 lite it has insane graphical bugs, (stretching lighting issues) and it crashes quite often. Considering the fact that my phone should be perfectly capable of running the game technically, it is so bad. AND it has a bug which prevents people from finishing the game. The controller support is also quite poor, it uses the same mechanics as touch when you are using a controller, for example shooting is retarded with a controller and some buttons are in the wrong places when you are using a PS3 controller.
This is all from my personal experience btw, except the finishing game bug i talked about.
If you count samp aswell I've played about 2600 hours of San Andreas lol

I so agree that even before gta5 San Andreas is rockstars greatest achievement and game in my book, and if anyone payed attention to just how much was implemented in this game would realise just how amazing it is! The PC version is where I customized this world and made it unique and great game the best ever, and it will be a timeless classic and never get old game great review on a great game💯
This is probably my favourite in the series. Every time I replay it, it just amazes me with the story, content, and addictive as all hell gameplay. Although I love 3 and vice, this game gave me something that no other in the series did. There’s such a wealth of different content compared to previous entries. I could talk for hours about how much I love it. It’s the one I played the most, for sure.

Love everything about this game it’s an absolute masterpiece if you ask me. Still play it to this day the story the characters and the setting are just so memorable. Not to mention the amount of all star talent they assembled to do the voice acting.

GTA SA was my intro to the series and I believe it was a good intro. I remember going to my friends house to play because my parents wouldn’t let me play rated M games and I remember playing the game for hours with cheat codes just flying around the map

dankmemerboi -also a trippy boi I played Vice City again recently and maaaan Tommy is so slow and fragile compared to CJ lol. He falls off motorcycles with the smallest bump, he stumbles while running and loses health, he can't swim, can't climb, can't maneuver while aiming, etc. Even though that's the case because Vice City came first, it also works because Tommy is much older than CJ.
Rockstar needs to make the next GTA more animated graphic. The realistic graphics take away from the game. GTA 5 is an amazing game on its own, but San Andreas qualified as the greatest free roam game of all time. There's just something about it

Oh man, San Andreas.... one of the best games ever. I played it on pc first, enjoyed the story and the open world for countless hours. Then I started using cheats and had the time of my life. The possibilities seemed endless and every day in San Andreas was different. Some years later, I replayed it on Ps2 and enjoyed it again. And the last time I played San Andreas was on Ps4, I played without cheats and earned my platinum trophy for this awesome and unique game. All of these playthroughs felt fresh and fun.

I still remember the insane amount of hype and build up to this coming out, in fact I still clearly remember skipping school to pick up and play my pre-ordered copy and the incredible feeling of "holy shit, it's actually living up to the hype" sinking in. Seeing this review has stirred up my nostalgia and love for the game and inspired me to fire it up on PS4 and go for 100% and the platinum trophy. :D
this has to be the game with the most content in ever? i've completed it about 3 or 4 times and i still see new shit i didn't know you could do to this day. like i didn't even know you could ride the train. one of my all time favourite games.

To me this game is still great. I did find some missions hard(because i played on the play station2) but it was still great. I would always wake up, do all my chores so that i wouldnt be disturbed while playing, and play this game for the rest of the day. Sometimes forgetting to eat or take a bathroom break(especially when i am at the peak of beating a hard mission). I will always love this game. But i wish they bring a remastered.

PS3 version HD version exists. Use a PC and emulator to get high res. For PC version use mods to get high detail.

It's difficult for me to choose which is the greatest game of all time between GTA San Andreas, and Red Dead Redemption.
If i had a gun to my head, i think i'd have to give that title to San Andreas.
Both games were masterpieces, but San Andreas blew people away with it's sheer scope. I can't think of any other game that packed as much content into one game, and did it so well. The missions were all fun, and kept the story going at an exciting pace.
The map was incredible in both size and variety. Every place had it's own unique feel, and while it is dated by today's standards, it was mind blowing at the time. GTAIV and V are both great games as well, but are missing most of the cheats and over the top features that made San Andreas so much fun.
Gone are the ability to control the trains, and crazy cheats that added so much to the free roam. Vice City was great as well, but most of it was due to the undeniable feeling of nostalgia that was driven by the music and atmosphere that made up the map.
San Andreas was equally as effective in delivering on the nostalgia as Vice City was, and in my opinion took it to another level.
Last but not least, San Andreas delivered more hours of pure fun than any game i have EVER played.
Rockstar overwhelmed you with a relentless attack on your senses.
You earned a Sub Mate - I've bought this new for my Ps3 - Never really got a chance to play it on the Ps2 and when I did play it, I never completed it, and that was back in 2005, I'm looking forward to playing this right now :)

Great review! This was definitely my favorite and my most played PS2 game. I have such a great memories of this game... my sitting there and being entertained for hours :D This game had such mystery to it :D For example, I was so thrilled when I saw the yellow arrow while cruising around the town.

What's even more interesting about San Andreas is that it's the Grand Theft Auto title with the most cut content. There's plenty of videos on CZcams that show how much stuff didn't make it into the finished product and they're still finding cut features to this day. If they had implemented everything the game would've been even larger and would've probably been the biggest videogame of it's era. This game really had it all...
@Jon Jones fan That was the main problem, if they had implemented all of the cut content the game would've needed two CDs. Still, would've really been interesting to see everything the developers had planned into the final product.
Too bad they couldn't release the game with all its content for the next consoles after ps2/xbox. Sort of like what the movies do with director's cut. That woulda been dope and made them more money, but hey...

16:07 Small correction; burglary missions are not required to be completed for %100, but are still good fun to do and also give you infinite sprint. Nor do you have to compete in lowrider competitions except for the one in the mission "Cesar Vialpando".
I just desperately hope that in my lifetime Rockstar will go all the way the hell out and make a single map that covers all of the US in a Rockstar manner from Liberty City all the way to Los Santos including other unintroduced city representations like Chicago, New Orleans, Houston, Minneapolis, Atlanta, Denver, Seattle, and everything in between... ugh! And to make traveling not so much of a hassle except for maybe a few missions that require ground travel, include airport travel (which San Andreas had) taxi rides, train rides, bus rides, ugh! The sky is the limit! A map like this can exist and it does in The Crew, but with the level of detail GTA always offers. THATS what I want.
MAN_ON_WHEELZ it took five years to make los Santos (gtav) to make all the states would prob be more than 40+ years unless they partner up with other bigger companies like Ubisoft cause if you don't realize rockstar only has about 3-4 hundred staff Ubisoft has 8000 staff so it will be difficult to create the US rockstar alone and also you will need heeps of cash but its not impossible with Ubisoft its possible but hard

My mind was blown, i just couldn't believe how much content there was, it's impressive by today's standards but keep in mind this is 2004.
It's one of the games i played the most.
As a kid i was just rampaging,years later i finally finished the story and loved it.
My favourite GTA, Vice City takes the second spot.

This game will always be the best GTA, its crazy when I say this but even the GTA V doesn't beat it , probably GTA 6 wont either, and its probably down to the pure nostalgia that this game gives off,

Yes the Air Raid on PS2 was the hardest mission. The sticks made it very hard to hit a target on distance. I failed this mission so many times.

In SA, you can customize other vehicles, given they are able to enter the custom shop... you just need to edit a txt file that governs which vehicles may be customized in which shop...
My favorite is the tractor with lowrider wheels!!

definitely one of the greatest games of all time, when I think of fond childhood gaming memories this is at the top. It brought so much to the table and evolved gaming by itself, it's just amazing really everyone should have played it by now
My refurbished PS2 served me well and lasted 9 years through alot of playtime.
But, it tore up a month ago and i hadnt played GTA San Andres a few weeks prior to that, so this is the longest i haven't played GTASA since i bought it 11 years ago.
I feel dead inside.
