So have you played any of these? Do you actually...enjoy any of them?
actually plenty of people did in fact like the first two Bubsy games so you are dead wrong about them "not approaching the realm of good" in fact they actually got pretty decent reviews back in the day, i'll gladly defend the first two games on my goddamn deathbed. I'm surprised to hear at how many people never made it past the first world on the first game, I actually beat that game as kid several times, guess I was way better at games as a kid then I thought.
I found a trick that makes the game a lot easier at least on Genesis-use your thumb to hit both the A and B buttons at the same time so that way you get the high jump with the glide.
Woolies Strike Back is good you crazy, i personally loved collecting the yarn balls and didn't get bored at all.
actually some of us were in fact asking for another Bubsy game and i'm glad Black Forest listened.
Super Mario Run sucks IMO
No but the first couple of them look passable enough.
When it comes to snarky characters, sometimes there's 'cheeky', and sometimes there's 'being the entire ass'
Bubsy on SNES seemed so cool at my friend’s place. But when I actually got it myself, the magic faded away quickly and it gathered dust pretty quickly.
Lol didn't your friend warn you or just allowed you to play it for a short amount?
Fortunately, my older brother who owned the SNES started with buying video game magazines in 93 so we never got complete duds
Paws on Fire has a very interesting development history that wasn't covered here, but to put it simply, it was outsourced to Choice Provisions, makers of the indie darling Bit.Trip series. It makes a whole lot more sense knowing that Atari likely found a cheap but successful development studio and said "make it like your best selling game" hence the no effort auto runner.
Though to be fair, Choice Provisions also did essentially the same thing for a League of Legends game they were making, so its hard to say the auto runner is a failing of Atari or the one trick pony style of Choice Provisions.
Was the game also released on mobile? The game looks like it
Wasn't their also Kickstarter drama?
I can explain a few things regarding Bubsy 3D. For the controls, they pulled from Jumping Flash, which many consider to be the first 3D platformer (it's not the absolute first, but the first that was an actual game). That game had similar tank controls and was lauded as being innovative and boundary-pushing, as it predates Super Mario 64 by about 2 years. The controls aren't exactly the same, though. I daresay the controls in Jumping Flash are tighter and there's weight. It's also worth noting that the game is played in first-person.
As for why it was released the way it was? Well, Michael Berlyn (creator of Bubsy and producer of Bubsy 3D) thought they were being innovative, since 3D platforming was still in its infancy at the time. It was to have fully 3D exploration. But when Nintendo showcased Super Mario 64 at the 1996 Consumer Electronics Show, he instantly knew Bubsy 3D was the inferior game. He wanted to delay the game so i could be refined and compete with SM64, but Accolade insisted on releasing the game as scheduled, as they already suck a lot of time, money, and resources into the game. To start over or delay the game would prove disasterous, so they had to make due given the circumstances.
Apparently, the game was considered "average" at the time. Though, again, 3D platformers were in their infancy, so there wasn't a whole lot to compare it to.
They did recycle the 2P mode projectile control stuff for a later game after polishing it, IIRC, so Bubsy 3D wasn't a COMPLETE loss. It's just that the best mechanic they had was the most underutilized one.
Also part of the issue was that they wanted HUGE levels with HUGE draw distance, and the devkit test stations had more power than the retail consoles, which led to having to remove all textures, and the levels being so barren and landmark-less. If the devkits weren't more powerful than the retail console I think they would probably have had better feature spotlighting and pruning, instead of wasting time on things that worked on the devkit and not retail.
Bubsy 3D was a lot more of a tragedy than people suspect it was, it was like they got smacked with the PS1 dev exclusive version of Murphy's Law.
The fact that there are more Bubsy games than Kid Icarus games or Megaman Legends games is criminal.
At least Kid Icarus and Rock man Dash games ended with a high note!
@@haaxxx9 Megaman Volnutt is canonically still stuck on the moon!
@@otaking3582 I mean what's higher than the moon, technically?

Bubsy being revived out of all of the dead franchises was a mistake. Just leave this bobcat in his grave and go revive anything else instead.

You forgot Bubsy 3D Remastered (James Turrell Retrospective).
1:06 Actually, there were quite a few successful animal mascot games and characters that were as least Sonic inspired. You had Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Rayman, Kazooie from Banjo-Kazooie, Diddy Kong from Donkey Kong Country 2 and Daxter from Jak and Daxter. It's just that for every successful "Sonic clone" there were a dozen Aero the Acro Bats, Punky Skunks and Awesome Possums.

Bubsy keeps coming back again and again, but just think of how many great franchises have been dead and buried for generations with little to no hope for revival. It's downright criminal!
Bubsy is like herpes. It’s irritating and unwanted, but it just keeps coming back.
We have 6 games in total. Looks like this bobcat has 3 lives left. Lets see, if it take 9 tries to make something decent.

Imagine telling me as a huge Mappy fan. Mappy is a really great series by Namco, and I would love for the series to be revived. Namco is a huge company that can afford to revive their classic franchises. Great franchises made by Namco like Mappy, Wonder Momo, Bravo Man, Sky Kid, and Rolling Thunder are collecting dust for no good reason.
I think you're onto something. Busby feels to everyone like Sonic feels to non-Sonic fans. I wonder how much more bearable it would've been with the ring mechanic and no fall damage.
Modern Sonic feels like Bubsy to me.
@@caucasoidape8838except modern Sonic’s at least bearable. Yeah, he’s an annoying dick, but at least he’s not ear-grating & makes you wanna put a bullet in your ears.

Kudos to Nitro Rad who fully reviewed Bubsy 3D, and yeah It as bad as you think.
It's funny how even HE said 'yeah, I ain't doing that shit again' after finding out he had to go back and collect all the rocket parts to get the alternate ending
Which STILL sucked
Yea it’s one of the first 3d games ever so it should be given some slack.
Literally one of the forerunners.

@@AL-lh2ht
I mean, don't give it slack, the ither 3D Games that came before it were infinitely better, Jumping Flash, Mario 64, Crash 1, and various Psudo 3D games were all leagues better, ans Bubsy 3D is still one of the most dreadful to play games to date all these decades later.
Their time is not an excuse, but a reason, the game should be bashed still, but the context it was very unkown ground shall be aknowledges for how it ended up so bad.
If only he had good commentary as well.
Fun(?)fact: Bubsy on the Genesis has a different cartridge shape than most other games on the Genesis. Not many games used this shape, but a few companies used it for one reason. The standard cartridge was part of Sega's licensing costs, which some companies, namely EA, didn't like and reverse engineered the Genesis and its cartridges to make their own games. This is kind of a sign of companies just wanting to sell a product for cheap, rather than quality. It's not exactly foolproof, but a good way to know if a Genesis game is terrible is if it has a similar cartridge to the EA games, with or without the odd yellow piece on the side.
Yeah the Road Rash cartridges looked different as well, they had this weird yellow thing.
Another fun (?) fact: Because Accolade were cheap bastards, they published a large amount of their Genesis games without a license by reverse engineering the lockout code on the console. After Sega found out and sued them for it, Accolade filed an appeal and WON the case leading to a landmark decision that still affects companies to this very day regarding reverse-engineering. So you can thank them for that too I guess
@@officialFredDurstfanclub good for them on winning.
@@officialFredDurstfanclubyou’re joking me. My question is: WHY!? Why would Accolade even do that anyway?
@@AlastorAltruistGaming Because they didn't want to pay the fee for bypassing lockout and IIRC they lad legal precedent thanks to I think Game Genie fighting Nintendo for their rights to make the Game Genie a thing.
Also because Sega required quality control for the license before allowing games to get to manufacture, and each re-evaluation costs money and time.
You can hear GameHut talk about why the Level Select code triggers when there's an error loading a level on Flicky 3D Island, where the devs "disguised" the error trap level select code as a "secret bonus", so if the SEGA testers found a bug they'd think it was a feature and it wouldn't need another round of evaluation stalling them.
Something I noticed in Bubsy 3D is that Bubsy has a drop shadow. This technique is used by a lot of 3D platformers to make it easier to see where you're going to land. That's at least something that the game got right!
I remember playing the Game Boy version of Bubsy 2 ages ago, and unless I'm misrembering, the B button lets you exit the level you're on entirely. It doesn't even ask "Are you sure?" it just drops you out of it.
it is ironic how a character who literally dies with one hit survive this long
you say, what about alex kidd? he is also a character who dies in one fell swoop in his games and in any case he was appreciated more than bubsy, you must learn to have a sense of humor and have love for characters like this instead of always being sarcastic!
@@user-wj8sl5ue1z sorry
It was just a funny commentary
I didnt knew alex kid also died in one hit
The franchise itself has much more resilience then Bubsy's character
I remember really liking the first game on the SNES when I was a kid. I could only get as far as the Western world but then me and my little brother found it funny to just see the craziest way we could lose a life in the game. One of the funniest that sticks in my head was when I was gliding and a manhole cover came flying up from the ground and sent me crashing to the ground only to land in one of the cars that carry you away. It was really funny at the time but I was never able to recreate it.
Atleast we can thank Bubsy for inspiring many great videos about his existence such as this one :D
To this day, I'm still confused how Bubsy of all game characters got so many chances. I get if it's games with a cult classic or seen as an underrated gem, but how many people out there are actually demanding more Bubsy games?
I guess it's because... cats have 9 lives XD
people actually did like the first two games back in the day, check out magazine reviews.
We are dozens, DOZENS
Its because some chinese holding company got the rights in a fire sale atari had to avoid bankruptcy and thought he was well known enough to garner some attention. All it takes is is an ip to fall into the right hands to spearhead a revival as i guarantee you something like ty the Tasmanian tiger would never have returned if the creators weren't smart enough to sign a contract where rights to the ip would revert to them if ea decided to drop the series(as ea published ty 1 and 2, activision ty 3 and ty 4 and the remasters were self published by the creators themselves) meanwhile banjo kazooie will remain in limbo because microsoft doesn't care.
It wasn't just Bubsy's corpse that was dug up from the Ash... Accolade itself was dug up from the Ash thanks to a Chinese holding company named Billionsoft.
True, the only reason why bubsy even got a revival was because atari was having a fire sale to avoid bankruptcy and billionsoft just so happened to aquire the license for cheap and felt he was famous enough character to garner some attention. Just goes to show you that all it takes for a franchise to be revived is just one person in a high enough position who cares as ty the Tasmanian tiger and kao the kangaroo were able to be revived because thier creators were smart enough to not sign a contract where a megacorp keeps your ip forever while banjo kazooie will remain in limbo because microsoft doesn't care.
Before even watching the phrase that entered my head was "Oh you poor man..."
Bubsy is a game made for a TV that somehow looks like it has the screen crunch of handheld port
The fact that you have Little Nemo: The Dream Master music in the background for the Manta Sleep advertisement is too perfect.
Finally someone got it
To quote Bubsy, "What could possibly go wrong?"
my guess as to why the gameboy version played so slow was to reduce the ghosting, 6 golden coins can be a little hard to see sometimes from what i remember on the og gameboy
You mean a glitch in SML2:6GC ? I remember slowdowns in some levels but that's all
They mean how the original Game Boy's screen made pixels move with a blurry transition effect@@napoleonfeanor
I loved the first Bubsy. Yeah it was hard as hell to play, but it was so pretty, each level had interesting mechanics, and I really liked the effort of the different death animations. I truly believe that if Bubsy's controls and whatnot had been tweaked enough, we probably would have had something. I honestly would love to take a crack at making a Bubsy fangame that's both playable and enjoyable someday.
People are way too mean to those 2D Bubsy games. Claws Encounters is fine.
Rose tinted nostalgia goggles would make you think that. I used to think the Gameboy Pokemon games were good.
@@elin111I mean in all fairness, the GB Pokemon games are still extremely enjoyable to this day. Sure, they show their age like a sore thumb and it is hilarious how the programming is being held together with a couple of pieces of duct tape, but the games themselves were still fun and entertaining.
You know why Bubsy survived? Jon Jafari. He's the only reason. Anyway good video as always Gilly!
no
CZcams game reviewers is probably the only reason why anyone remembers a lot of dead IPs
Apparently, the reason for Bubsy 3d's graphics looking like a test level is the developers decided to implement the PlayStation's "high res" mode.
I get the impression they originally intended Bubsy to be some sort of flying squirrel, hence why it can glide, but "Bubsy the bobcat" was just too much of a catchy name
To me the weirdest aspect of the whole Bubsy comeback is how it would seem Bubsy as a franchise can only be a "decent" game if it becomes a reskin of a another game from a rotation of indie developers (Giana Sisters, Bit.Trip Runner) instead of carving an identity of its own, but I guess that all Bubsy can really aspire to be
You know the guy who created Bubsy died earlier this year, maybe that might deter us from getting another Bubsy game.

I like it and the second game. I got pretty good at both.

Honestly the strange thing about Bubsy to me is that if the writing and gameplay was better it could probably be an honest to god good video game franchise, especially with how influential of a voice actor Rob Paulsen is even today.
Well, if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle. You'd need to change pretty much everything from the ground up for good gameplay.
I remember from another content creator that an American or British magazine created huge hype for the game to a degree I found suspicious. Don't remember the name anymore sadly. I remember it got a bad score from German Nintendo magazine "TOTAL!" ( I still have all issues in boxes and from time to time read them as well as other old video game magazines)

Anyways I was looking for the Rom to relieve those memories and found it thanks with some CZcams help. ❤ have a special spot for that game in my heart
I am probably one of like twelve people that actually enjoy playing Bubsy 1. Partially because I learned how to control the thing (Basically always hold the glide button and don't try to constantly run). But once you do, it's a platformer that's not too bad in most ways, and somewhat enjoyable at times. And if you do progress, you even learn that the devs put in some effort with the various worlds.
For example a general thing most of them got: The levels are LAYERED. You got two or three routes on every level where you regularly can swap at certain points (down is usually easier and may happen by accident).
Along with that, each world got their own gimmick, too.
The first world is a plain grass land from whatever 16-bit-platformer you want, with the mentioned layers (ground VS floating platforms and waterslides). Second is an amusement part (lower level is flat but got more enemies, upper level is a platform chaos on a rollercoaster you can sometimes ride). The wild west is not layered, but each level is split in two...
Also, despite people claim that, in Bubsy 1, he is *NOT* chatty. He spews a one-liner every time you load (re)start level, and that's it. No mid-level-commentary.
Gilly: I actually have no idea what the atom goal is for the stages, if I'm being honest.
My brain: Don't say it.
Me, a wrestling fan: ATOOOOM GOOOAAAL, BAYBAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!
Clearly the publishers are following the same mantra first spoken by Bubsy himself: what could possibly go wrong?
And everything does.
I might have to check out that Manta Sleep as I work the graveyard shift, its hard for me to get the required hours needed to go right back to work 12 hours later, even with a custom made mattress. I Appreciate it, Gilly.

I rented Bubsy for SNES so many times. Never got past the first stage and yet I loved it. I have no idea why. I think I was just charmed by the fact that you fight the enemies in a cartoony cloud of fists when you jump on them.
And now bubsy is getting a purrfect collection
As a person whose deepest connection to the franchise was watching the animated pilot one time, I was disproportionately giddy to see Arnold get his own special spotlight in-game
There have been more Bubsy games in the last 10 years than DK games, and there have been far more Bubsy games in the last 20 years than F-Zero games.
The games industry is completely beyond me...
Fun(?) Fact about Bubsy's Devs: Pretty much everyone who worked on Bubsy hated Bubsy. When the team got around to Bubsy 2, they were so fed up with it that they got their aggression out by sticking pencils through Bubsy plushies, and were hanging them via a noose. And these were special plushies that were only given to the staff as well, so you KNOW they hated it.
BumblesMcFumbles made a video talking about this, so go watch that for more context.
Bubsy is so weird. It feels like it was devised in a similar board room to the one in the episode of the Simpsons that brought us Poochy the Dog. The games were advertised HARD in magazines...countless pages were wasted on strategies for playing Bubsy...whole maps for levels...it doesn't make any sense. It genuinely feels like the corporations that be wanted Bubsy to be a hit, and threw way too much money at the problem, instead of anyone actually wanting these games in the first place.
I'll still maintain that the games look kind of nice. If there had been any actual heart put into the design of the games, we might have gotten something memorable like Rocket Knight Adventures, or at least something passable like High Seas Havoc.
I thought this was a journey through the games, not a toe-dip into every game. I demand a full playthrough of Bubsy 3D!

I really liked the first game as a teen...It was playable you just need to take thing slowly and get as many live as you can (there are so many of them),

The fact Bubsy lasted as long as it has/did is a marvel in its own sense. Just a mess of a series.
Bubsy for SNES has a special place in my heart....a hidden gem

It's definitely the best bubsy game.
Agreed. I was so close to commenting bubsy two is probably the best of them and is overall not that bad of a game. It definitely improved on the first. Not saying it was great or perfect, but seemed more balanced and fair. I genuinely enjoyed it as a kid and can't say that about all the bubsy games. It's a solid platformer especially at the time.

You can glide in Bubsy 3D by just holding the triangle button. You can even break this by holding select for a second during the glide (while still holding triangle) to get infinite jumps/height, making the glide insanely overpowered... Just don't do it over water. You'll die instantly because the game acts like you've landed for a moment and it uses the properties of the surface directly below you during the said moment.
I wonder how much Caddicarus would like this video! 😁😁😁
As a kid, I actually really liked the first Bubsy on the SNES. I think I played it so much, I had most of the game memorized. I surprisingly got pretty far in the game because of that. The only level I don't remember in your clips of the game was the space level. Had I know I could use passwords, I probably would have actually beat it.
I only saw that space level using passwords from a magazine. The furthest I could get normally, was the Canada stage. I usually died on that train stage though.
I beat the first game on Genesis multiple times, it's not nearly as hard as Gilly makes it out to be and it's actually good, I think he just sucks at the game and does not want ot admit it.
Gilly, nice video as ever. But I think you could also have mentioned Super Bubsy (Windows 95 remastered edition of the original) and the failed cartoon. Now please do a journey through ALL Streets of Rage games (all Genesis, Game Gear and Master System edition - the last two actually differ -, Bare Knuckle Mobile, SOR Remake and SOR4 - and maybe some more I forgot).

Edit: when you want to glide on the fans you have to have his shadow be over them and the shadow is locked to right below Bubsy's feet
You poor, poor man
Now Bubsy he's long forgotten now
I remember getting to a space station level on Bubsy (1), never played it since for fear that my past self is better than current me.
Whenever I played bubsy 1 on my SNES, I just held down R the whole time so I could see what's in front of me, but it seems you can't really do that on a mega drive
I tried to play Bubsy 3D on my PlayStation 1 for nostalgia and to hear his ranting.
To my surprise, the disc no longer would play. It is in pristine condition without any scratches.
Should I be grateful that it refuses to play?
I will not at all deny that Bubsy one could be on the difficult side. I do recall it being so. But it's amazing how far being a ten year old that did not have a ton of other sega genesis games and actually kind of liked the game will get you. I don't think I could beat the game if I played it again though. Older games and more current feel like they require a lot more of different skills from the other and I'm out of practice. I am so sorry you experienced Bubsy 3D though.
I think Mario 64’s camera hasn’t aged well but then I see Bubsy 3D’s camera
I was 10 when bubsy came out and actually enjoyed it.
I was 13 when bubsy 3d was released and found it frustrating as hell
Fun fact. In Bubsy 2 in hard floor shump level is the easiest. You see, the more hard level is the more it's complex and toughter to find the exit. But in shmup section exit hidded right at the start point. If you don't know it - you will be scanning this level very long
YEAH BUBSY. I FUCKING LOVE BUBSY
Bubsy 3-D doesn't even have the slight interest one gets in seeing how a new level looks, like you have in the Jaguar game, because, despite each level having a punny name and supposedlly connected visual representation of what it's about before it starts, every single level is the same barren hallway with just the occasional different placement of some platforms to jump up to or the location of a body of water that kills you.
I wouldn't be half as mad as I was playing this if they gave the remotest bit of a damn while making it and just tried to make the levels actually themed in some way, as opposed to looking like an unfinished pre-alpha concept demo for every single level.
I remember watching a video covering its development and it was apparently a mess with weird demands and all sorts of problems
Actually, they did care. The issue was the team was unfamiliar with developing a 3D platformer. Michael Berlyn wanted to give the game more time after seeing Super Mario 64, but to do so would put Accolade in financial danger, due to the amount of time, money, and resources they pumped into Bubsy 3D. They were essentially between a rock and a hard place and just had to make due with the circumstances.

Maybe not a great game, but they likely thought they were inventing the 3d platformer-then while they were still developing it, Crash Bandicoot *AND* Mario 64 come out and completely steal all your thunder, doing it way, way better. Bubsy 3D was roughly 4 months too late to be a revolutionary game, for better or for worse.
I used to rent Bubsy 1 when it came out, and yeah, the criticisms are valid.
But to a kid in the 90s, that rental was your whole weekend, so I kept playing it. I then rented it again another weekend in the future, and slowly but surely I got better and made progress.
Eventually I knew it inside and out, collected all the extra continues and beat the whole game! And looking back, I did have fun, learning its little quirks, discovering secrets and racking up lives to counter all the deaths.
Bubsy 2 was fine, made easier by the health system, bonus levels and once you figured out how best to use the power ups (such as equipping the diving suit and jumping into a body of water to find a new bonus level, or just going crazy with the nerf gun), there was some genuine fun to be had there too.
Fractured Furry Tales and Bubsy 3D, though, I played years after they came out, and...yeah there's really no defending those ones, I couldn't stomach those past the first levels. Utter rubbish.
i got both games from my cousin and enjoyed them
Now that’s impressive
great vid.
I had Bubzy 1 on pc as a kid and while it was extremely hard, I do remember making it to level 2. But not past that. I'm surprised you couldn't
Hard, or Bullshit. There's a very distinct difference.
Oh, Gilly, you poor soul…
He didn't force himself to actually finish them though
Thank fuck
