I've always looked at plushes and toys in general as a form of art, however it is true that many of them are made purely for marketing purposes. Many companies released plush toys to advertise their brands and franchises, no matter how iconic they are. In this video, I'll be going over some of the wackiest and craziest brand promotions I can find, or at least ones that I find interesting. We're covering plushes like Bonzi Buddy, DeviantArt's Fella, Tony's Pizza and even Bubsy, along with many more you may find interesting. While these are purely marketing material most of the time, many have fascinating stories, and that's what I'm covering today.

If you've ever wanted a PatMac video where I talk about the history of plushes of characters like Bonzi Buddy, Bubsy and more, you've come to the right place. Believe it or not, this was originally intended to not go up on April Fools. I was originally going to release it yesterday, but I realized since the subject matter is so strange compared to my previous videos, it worked perfectly. In that case, HAPPY APRIL FOOLS! But don't be fooled, this video is no joke.
This will likely end up being one of the strangest videos I ever make, so I hope you all enjoy it! This was really fun to research and create, and it was a blast collecting what I needed for this video. Yes, I do actually own the Bonzi Buddy plush. I own a Fella plush as well, as my dad actually worked for deviantART for a few years. We have super llama as well, and even deviantART emoticon stress balls. Fella isn't in the best quality right now, but he's still our little fella. I actually had no idea until now that the deviantART store closed, guess the merch we own is kinda valuable now.

When I worked at Target if we got guests to sign up for enough redcards we could win a prize like a free CD, free snacks, or a Bullseye dog plush. I always got the plushie. I love how you described plushies in the beginning. A well made plush is just so aesthetically pleasing!!!

I found an original DA Fella plushie a year ago at a SWAP MEET and snatched it for $1. It's one of my most prized plushies in my collection and I love it. Nowadays they're like $50~ online. I'm a sucker for plushies in general, so getting a physical merch and reminder of a mascot is very special to me
If you wanna see weird brand mascot plushes, the toliet paper brand Cottonelle had a dog mascot that they released a plush of. It's pretty well made and came in a plush dog house/carrier and had accessories. Still pretty weird though.
At least it wasn't the Charmin bears.

I actually have one of these. Specifically the Big Fish Games one. Turns out they're still around and haven't changed a bit; I got that plush of their silly-looking fish mascot within the last few years. Using their site feels like stepping into the past, but somehow it's still maintained and they're still making goofy (but fun) PC games which look like they're about 15 years old.
fun stuff for the bubsy plush stories: JennyN is actually a youtuber! her name is Jenny Nicholson and she covers topics like wild books sold on amazon, star wars, and my little pony! she was actually the voice behind most of the cast of friendship is witchcraft (along with sherclop pones). she recently-ish (a couple weeks ago) tweeted about the bubsy plushes she owned! she still has both and isn't going to sell either of them. she's pretty entertaining to watch and i really recommend her- seeing her mentioned in this video is pretty wild considering i've been binge rewatching her videos lately lmao

I would honestly love a Fella plushie, dA was where I started art for fun, and ended up going to college for it. Very nostalgic!
Probably the rarest promo plush I have is the Green Cybunny Neopets one. The older one was officially released, but this newer one was limited to a 1000 release contest. I’ve had her for years and love her, but it’s very clear she was on the lower end of the Cybunny plush scale (and yes, I collected them all as a kid). Notably, her ruff markings were painted on, compared to other Cybunnies that had different plush colors on them. As such, the twelve-year-old “Millie” (as I call her) has almost no sign of the pink spots that used to be around her neck, and her tag has since fallen off, but she is otherwise in excellent condition. I suspect very few of the sweepstakes Green Cybunnies still have their spots.
I actually remember having a Christmas version of that Taco Bell Chihuahua. It would say "Feliz Navidad, Amigos!"

It's designed as a promotional item by BD&A (Now BDA), which now does gaming stuff under their "PowerA" brand. I hate how the people who made my Switch controller also made Bonzi plushes, lol.

Steven Smith's Toys made a plush of the NBC Peacock off all things. It was released in 1998 for NBC Studio Gift Shops in New York. I have one of these and I loved it.

Its amazing how sometimes stuff like this can be so rare and then one day someone finds a storage unit full of them and suddenly theyre significantly more affordable on ebay. its what happened to a mail in kid cuisine furby. was suuper rare until suddenly a listing with a bunch showed up on ebay
smh i'd keep them all in storage and pop one up on ebay for a little under market when i needed some extra cash
This happened with the gold star shiny Entei, Suicune, and Raikou pokemon cards that are supposed to be 1 in every 72 extremely expensive booster packs, a while ago some dutch dude on ebay got a binder of 5000 of them somehow and pokemon card investors called them illegal and inauthentic when tons of them have been graded by PSA with no problem. I think it's far more likely they got printed for some tournament that got cancelled than the conspiracy theory they're spouting when they were only worth like $10 when they came out in 2005. They're still worth like hundreds of dollars now so it didn't really drive the value down. Rich people never want anybody to be able to enjoy anything without having to pay a fortune so they throw tantrums over something as simple as an extra copy of an extremely limited pokemon card granted to the person who designed it.

I love collecting weird and obscure plushes and action figures. A few months ago, I was at a retro toy shop and found plushes of Batfink and McGruff the Crime Dog, so I couldn’t NOT buy them lol. Wish I could get my hands on that Bubsy plush; I’m currently writing a Pixels sequel that features him as comic relief and really plays up his dated humor and personality

It's interesting to hear about people's experiences with DeviantArt from the 2000s. I didn't know about the website before 2016.
My grandma has owned that Aflac duck toy for at least like 14 years. It was my favorite toy to play with at her house because it would speak when you squeezed it. I have no idea where the duck is now. I am 17. Nothing ever seems to leave her house, so I'm sure he's still in there somewhere. One day, I plan to find him again. Wish me luck!

Nya, The world of rare and promotional plush is quite a journey, a continuous discovery of things that you would never imagine existed.
I still remember my perplexity when I accidentally found a plush of Geoffrey the giraffe, the Toys"R"us mascot. (in his 80s design) A toy store mascot plush? Inception! Needless to say, to this day it still occupies a preferential place in my house.
My mother was working in a dairy company, with a very close relationship with the marketing department and once she brought home two Millaquito and Millaquita plushies, the Millac milk mascots. If I hadn't seen them with my eyes I would have had a hard time believing they were real.
I once heard about the supposed existence of a plush of the clown Nikki, the mascot of the Nikki toy store, and another one of Moncho, the mascot of Monchitos, a puffed rice snack, but at the moment they are just legends. Who knows?

Fun fact this is exactly what I do, I'm from the UK and I collect promotional plushies from UK and USA and it's really strange but fun 😄 some of my rarest are hoops & yoyo from hallmark and the funky pigeon from the English card website.
