  • Some excellent queries this week from you guys, thank you all! Today I'm asked what the worst experience I had a support band for another big band...this one experience with Disturbed in London is memorable, but maybe not for the right reasons. Some more guitar based musings also for those of you who enjoy that too!
Thank you SuperThanks folks - if you weren't featured in this week's episode and you've done a SuperThanks it was just because I filmed this before you commented.

I have a question. Even the great Eddie Van Halen has said that he can't play guitar and sing at the same time. He said it's like patting your head and chewing gum while roller skating. I've seen that you mostly sit out on the guitar during most of the song before catching a guitar sent via lightning strike from God above to do a face-melting solo. 😉 I wonder if this is because you have the same trouble or does it just depend on what suits the song? (BTW I play drums and can't keep a beat and sing at the same time. No judgement.) Be well.

But the way that influenced your performance was just amazing and I don’t think I will ever forget it. You were just superb and my friend and I still talk about it to this day. Fuck the haters, you sir are a legend.

To answer the question about reaching super high notes, a lot of it has to do with the natural voice of the vocalist. My husband is a vocalist (he minored in voice/vocal performance at University) and he has a very deep voice. His speaking and singing voice is a deep bass. He finds it difficult to sing in higher keys because it's beyond his natural range. He can if a certain song calls for it, but it really strains his vocal chords.

Can you explain how songwriting credits work? some songs will say "Written by Paul McCartney" but its well know that John or George had input creatively on the song either with the music or the lyrics. Surely when you bring a song to the band you don't have the solo or drums fully fleshed out already? so wouldn't them contributing a solo or whatever it might be count as a writing credit? How can a song be credited to one person in a band? Thanks!

I am of the mind that starting on a cheap acoustic will help with strengthening the fingers up and getting callous. The first time you play a nice low action electric becomes very freeing.

Hi Justin! Love the show!.. just been listening to Friday Night, and I was wondering how the hell you got that sweet guitar sound on the solo section. I don’t know what it is about it, it almost sounds synth like in parts and I find it brilliant!

Oh hey Mr Justin Hawkins, thought you might be interested to know that all the way over in Australia at the 3/4 time break in the Sydney Swans game they played I Believe in a Thing Called Love.
I thought of your channel and then thought of the few extra cents you might get from having your song played to 26k people

Question for next time - have you ever found yourself getting frustrated with playing music, and if so, how did you come out of it? Did you carry on and let it pass or take a break for a bit? Thanks and love your channel!

    Good day, Justin!
As usual, I really enjoy and look forward to your posts.
It's like Christmas morning - waiting to open a present. :-)
I was wondering if you would consider talking about the voice of TAYLOR MOMSEN of the band "Pretty Reckless". I love her soulful, husky voice - would really like to hear her do one of my favorite female singers, STEVIE NICKS!
A quick history, Justin: Pretty Reckless was touring with Soundgarden when unfortunately, and tragically, we lost Chris Cornell. It set Taylor into a dark pit of despair and depression for years - which as songwriters, we know those emotions can produce incredible lyrics. She took a break after Cornell passed away. She 'soldiered up' (an American tern, of course!) and started singing again but her best friend, her guitarist, tragically died in a motorcycle accident. Back down that horrific, black, empty hole she was thrown again.
After a few very tough years she emerged with her band and they are back on the road now, having come to terms with her grief and demons - which is represented in her dark lyrics and visuals, etc.
A good song to review for you would be her tribute to Chris Cornell:
The Pretty Reckless - The Keeper (Chris Cornell cover feat. Alain Johannes)
Searching that will take you there. It's just the guitar and her unique voice.
I really hope you give it a listen to and share your feedback with us!
    Cheers, Justin!
Love your Channel, engaging personality and humor, and your stories!

Hi Justin.Thoughts on guitar synth pedals?Treated myself to a Roland GR55 couple years ago but not finding it easy to hop between sounds then recently discovered Electro Harmonix (amongst others) gone mad with all manner of accessible synth pedals(polyphonic synth, mono synth, piano, organ, strings, etc) in their “9” series.I seem to go for increasingly dynamic extremes.Super clean verses (my telecaster is rapidly becoming my go to guitar) and then everything including kitchen sink, dishwasher, bespoke coffee maker, talkie toaster and pizza oven thrown at the chorus.

    Hi Justin.
Really big fan of your channel. Great opinions, advice and musical talent. My question is; I am a songwriter and have made a lot of high standard demos both with lyrics that are complete and ready for a band to record and some instrumental songs ready for a lyricist to put their own stamp on. Trouble is, where do I send these songs? It' s so hard to get them to a record company or a publisher as there are so many out there who just want your money. So where do I send my songs and demos?
Thank you for entertaining me on my lunch break every day.
    Adam

I love that question around the six minute mark about the best year or mini era of music because you're gonna get a different response largely based on how it affected the listener. '84? Huge. '93? Equally so. But for my money it was '76-'77, the year that gave us the Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, and Elvis Costello just to name a few. My record collection is very happy about that year, as am I.

Hey Justin. The first album I ever bought was "Permission to land" by this band called the Darkness. I think to this day (now 33) has forever influenced my taste in Music. What was the first album you ever bought? And how much does your taste in music now align to that album? Thanks
