  • Everyone's reading experience is different as it should be. But in the world of social media now I understand the comparison bug can creep up on us -- it affects me too. So in today's video, I really wanted to tackle and discuss how your reading experience, pace etc should always be YOUR experience and about what truly makes YOU a reader!

Whew! Very well said, I’m not a super fast reader at all and I’ve always felt like that was a con? disadvantage? of myself?…IDK! But reading at my own pace and enjoying the story for what it is, is something I completely agree with you on!! Don’t make it feel like a chore!

It's only recently that I've stopped trying to keep up with other readers. I will never read as much as other people, but I still enjoy my reading. I'm currently reading The Lost World, and even though I've had it for over a week, I'm only on 50% through, and I'm 100% okay with that. When I read it, I'm thoroughly enjoying myself and not thinking about how slow I'm going. I'm just immersing myself in the world.

I seem to go through phases.
Some series and authors I can read their books incredibly quickly because I get so sucked into it. Then I have a desire to read more and more of their works and so sometimes do 3/4 books a month.
However, after reading some large books I want to take a break and digest what I’ve read and so take a few weeks break or slowly read a new series.
As long as you’re enjoying it, I think there’s nothing wrong with whatever pace you choose.

I have been an avid reader for a very long time. Once I started watching Book-tubes for some time, I noticed I wasn't enjoying my reading anymore. I got caught up in the " read so many bks. a month"thing. I would take out 5-7 bks. from the library and have to return most be wise I didn't finish them. I have very bad health, 4 auto-immune illnesses, chronic pain, etc. It takes 1/2 the day sometimes to take care of my body. Then there's ALL the dr. appts. I decided to not try to be like the book-tubes and just enjoy my reading again. Whether it is 1or2 bks. a month (depends on size too), re-reads, my old children's bks.; it's my decision and I don't have to be like anyone else. It's what makes me happy, fulfills and satisfies me. I ENJOY my reading AGAIN!

I read Frankenstein and of course it's a brilliant classic that lends itself to so much discussion - there was a lot I liked and didn't like but the point is that it's quite moving but still has that original recipe of gothic crazy! If you review it, it'll be brilliant. Now I'm reading The Angel Maker by Alex North, who's given me a new taste for thrillers. He writes police procedurals with a slight supernatural bent
I love your art and your work here. You've got character, charisma, creativity, presence, and sincerity I don't see in other BookTubers/Tokers - a lot of them don't have skills you have as an actor and storyteller. I enjoy your originality too. But content creation is a real job - so is chasing the algorithm, growing the audience, etc - and consumers don't realize that. And we get caught up trying to read like it's a job. I love how you put it about what really matters in the experience of reading.
By the way, how you use your hands from 5:19 is great, and then at the end is also great.

Ohh I love police procedurals with a slight supernatural bend. Literally makes me think of the first few seasons from Supernatural 🙌🏻 love that show.
Wow, that’s so sweet and kind of you to say, thank you. I’m always working to challenge and improve with every video i make 🙌🏻 and yes as a content creator working with the algorithm is a whole other ballgame. My ex best friend used to get through books in just a couple days. She would make fun of me because I could take a couple months to finish a book. But the thing is I have adhd and autism. My adhd makes it hard to focus and I sometimes have to reread things. And my autism makes it so my brain has to read it at a pace that makes since. You aren’t going ti have dialog that’s extremely fast in real life, I read it at the pace that makes since for me. When I was a kid, I struggled with ADHD--then the hyperactivity vanished, leaving me with ADD. It feels like it takes me extra effort to summon the concentration, but it is ultimately rewarding when I can get into the state where the words on the page go away and I experience scenes in my head. Reading is the most immersive pastime there is.
For a decade, I lost the ability to read fiction because life turned upside down, but a couple years ago, I began to apply the 2-minute rule to reading. I set a minimum of 10 pages a day. Then increased to 15 since that roughly worked out to 100 pages a week. Now I moved up two reading two books at the same time. Sometimes I even manage to alternate between 3-4 books, up to 70+ pages in a day. For normal folk that may be pitiable, but for those of us struggling with ADD/ADHD, I believe there are ways to cope.

    • @AlyLourim
      @AlyLourim  Před rokem

Your first paragraph is so relatable 🙌🏻 and I did something similar to get back into reading. I would literally just read before bed till I got tired even if it was just 5-10 mins to reset the habit. And I think the advice you gave for what you did to build the habit and increase your page count is so great and helpful. Tools like this really help our adhd brains. And I agree, once we are finally able to focus and be entranced on the world, is the best immersion ever 🙌🏻☺️ thank you so much for watching, I’m glad it resonated!

It can be tough sometimes. A random phrase can provoke unrelated sidebars of thought that sweeps me away like a ripetide. Also, I'm internally listening to song clips in my head, interposed with clips of shows or replaying scenes from other books. Last week, scenes from Guardians 3 took up quite a bit of bandwidth.
BTW…I read the Annotated Hobbit last year. It revealed quite a bit of the development and revisions of the book as well as Tolkien's mindset and inspirations. I didn't realize that Tolkien was essentially a triple threat. Not only was he a groundbreaking author and a professor of philology, but a visual artist in his own right.

I hate it here so I will go to
secret gardens in my mind-Taylor Swift. That’s the best way I can describe my reading life. I tried reading faster but it wasn’t as helpful as I thought. A lot of speed reading is only skimming. Then it just turns reading into a chore I have to do? Instead of a choice if that makes sense. Especially when reading fiction, I like to picture it in my head and get to know the characters. Good reading is more about the fluency instead of the speed. Reading at my own pace is much more enjoyable. Also Middle Earth got me into fantasy too 😊

@@AlyLourim oh ok. I recommend continuing to try, it's a learned skill just like anything else and once you're able to do it, it's soooo worth it. There's amazing narrators out there who bring stories to life in new and incredible ways. I know it sounds counter intuitive but if you're having trouble drifting off, especially if you have ADHD, turn up the playback speed. You're drifting off cause your mind is getting bored with the slower narrators, a higher playback speed kicks your brain into gear and gives it something to want to pay attention to. Just try it at least once I promise it works.
I recommend trying Kings Dark Tidings by kel kade, AMAZING narrator, fast paced plot, loveable characters, you won't want to hear anyone else after listening to Nick Podehl narrate it.
