Well, when I took some electronic engineering technology one of my professors quoted the K.I.S.S. rule, if Alex was an engineer, he should have thought of a "desktop" case with the components laying horizontal. Actually, both teams should have. I don't understand this obsession with building towers as towers don't really fit in entertainment systems as much as desktop computers and I was glad that my HP's Elite Desk system and even my older HP Compaq have the option of tower or desktop modes. The older one the drives could be swapped out and rotated 90 degrees without tools to flip from one orientation to the other.

I would love to see them build a case from stuff at IKEA or some other kind of shop. Fix budget but they can buy anything they want to make a case.
Yeah its the reason why scrapyard wars got so big...its fun seeing them scramble for janky shit.. Also at the start it really looked like Linus is going to loose big time and thats without accounting in that he seemed to be the only one doing anything in their team :D

@@peters.7428 damn I have a ps2 and gamcube collection and these games are not more reliable at any extent.... sure I prefer actually owning the game, it's why I made a collection... but digital is still king.
I even run my modded ps2 off an ethernet cord, directly to my computers HDD to play games. It's really worth modding a ps2 like this because you can also just put a HDD in the back of the ps2 and load them that way. When I want to feel the experience of opening the case, peeking at the manual as the disc loads in the tray, I do that. But for most part is easier/ faster to use the software "opl" on ps2.

and hardline watercooling
easiest and probably "best case" is still a motherboard packaging at all. I fitted a midclass blower style cpu cooler (which is also the only intake fan!) and a regular psu and a 3,5" HDD in such a package, only for GPUs a low profile card is needed or probably a bigger box, at least all my motherboards had barely the same size of packaging.
I ended up with a GPU sticking out a bit of the box,but it was a damn nice small casing and also "portable" with the handles of the original box. Still all i needed was a more silent media PC and everything lying around was also no real option. Since everything fitted tight in the box, the cooling was also efficient since the only fan, the CPU fan blew air with more speed over the whole mainboard part.

I was thinking that too. You really could build a awesome PC case out of cardboard given unlimited time, tape, and some nuts n bolts to hold the motherboard up.

Ok, I have to admit, this is one of the coolest things you've guys have done since pc scrap wars. I too, have been forced into using cardboard boxes until I could get a real case, I fully appreciate the effort you put in.

I'd love to see a remake of this where each team has like 12 hours. I feel like there was potential to make some really good cases here, but not enough time. Could even combine it with scrapyard wars, have a week long competition where you buy the parts and then make the case of of cardboard.
This is like the Top Gear of the tech world. I would watch a whole series of these sorts of challenges!

@@totallyunoriginalusername well first, if the coolant were ever to leak we need a whole new case for it, second I don't think cardboard can hold screws that hold the weight of a radiator filled with coolant...the cardboard may get ripped off
Last but not the least since neither cases are stable enough cause they don't have glue in it there is structural integrity issues as the cardboard is relying solely on the grip strength of the overlap and the liquid cooling kit may be too much for it to handle

I love this video! It reminds me of a friend who passed away years ago. He would make a new computer each time he went to a lan party using a cardboard box as a case. It's a fun party trick and somehow it always outperformed everything anyone else brought.

maybe not a whole week. I think they could have completed their case if more organised time management was enforced. So a 2 hour phase where teams plan a design, and their design is presented and graded. Then another 2 hour phase where they build their design, after which they are judged and penalised for differences between expectations and reality.
I agree with the whole day, rather than a week, I'd love to see what they could come up with! And lets agree that double sided tape is allowed.... some parts just need adhesives :D
