If you want to go on a Hong-Kong / Chinese cinema adventure, there's a whole universe of films to get into.

Sammo hung was known as the biggest brother in Hong Kong cinema, he was called dai kong in Chinese as the biggest of all brothers.. if you see his films u can see why he is the best.

_Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon_ is one of the few _wuxia_ films to break out of the genre and win international, mainstream acclaim. It is an extraordinarily beautiful and beautifully shot film.
Among its many accolades were nominations for ten Oscars, winning four: Best Foreign Language Film, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Original Score; and nominations for fourteen BAFTAs, also winning four: Best Foreign Language, Best Director, Best Costume Design and Best Music.

A beautiful film for sure, but I found it quite boring. Unpopular opinion perhaps, but just my opinion.

As a long-time fan of HK cinema, I honestly find CTHD to be pretty mediocre.
That came out while I was in film school so we studied it.
Almost all of the Masters in this are actual real Kungfu experts, some even came out of retirement for this movie.
The scene where he crushes the soccer ball is a reference to Steven Chow's previous movie Shoalin Soccer. It was Chow's way of saying this wasn't a sports movie and not to expect the same thing.
Bill Murray called Kung Fu Hustle "the supreme achievement of the modern age in terms of comedy."
There are a lot of call-outs to other movies in this film. The blood coming out of the elevator is a reference to The Shining (a movie you should react to-maybe next Halloween). You recognized the call-out to Spider-Man. Another one is the series of gestures that landlady makes toward Brother Sum in the car-Bruce Lee made the same series of gestures toward a crime boss in the movie Return of the Dragon.
I'm older than you, so when I first saw the high-speed chase between Landlady and Sing, I thought of the roadrunner from the Warner Brothers cartoons, not Sonic the Hedgehog.
The actress who played landlady didn't originally intend to be in this film. She had been in some movies, including the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun. But she had retired from acting in the eighties. She accompanied a friend to an audition for Kung Fu Hustle, where Stephen Chow noticed her smoking a cigarette with a sarcastic look on her face. He offered her the role without an audition.
Also him stomping the soccer ball was in response to people demanding he make a "Shaolin Soccer"sequel.
When the axes dance at the beginning the soundtrack is very blues brothers
I love the juxtaposition of her showing up to support a friend but still looking as grumpy as the landlady somehow.

The same creator also made Shaolin Soccer which is also a truly fun movie. Sadly it is only English Subbed. However it is not am a film made in the United States but China so that is 100% understandable.
Its funny during the fight with the musicians and the guy with the rings, you mentioned Shang-Chi. The actor playing the husband landlord is also the the old Archery master from the Ta Lo village in Shang-Chi.
I believe the rings fighter was a Kung fu consultant on Shang-chi

Stephen chow is a genius writer/director. he could have written badass and heroic roles for himself but he never done that. He always came up with simple main characters and made them unforgettable and legendary.
Kung Fu Hustle is more a parody of old Kung Fu movies--but if you want to get into some proper Wuxia (the "floating around kung-fu" movies), Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers, and Hero are all friggin' beautiful (and very accessible to Western audiences).
Nah those aren't it, those movies came later when Hong Kung was trying to be Hollywood with the big budget films, and artsy. Got to go old school 90s. Iron Monkey, Once Upon a Time in China, Swordman 2, Wing Chun, Drunken Master 2.
If you want to see true great kung fu Hong cinema it's movies from sammo hung, Jackie Chan lar kar leung, Yuen woo ping and the great Chang Che! The masters of action.

One of my favorite Jackie Chan movies is Drunken Master 2. His kung-fu is enhanced by alcohol. Comedy ensues. Another comedy Shaolin Soccer. Monks have left the monastery to pursue life in the modern world. The monastery ask them to help so they join a soccer tournament . Stephen Chow, star of this movie also stars.

I’m a lifelong martial artist. “Chi” translates literally to “breath”. Some people will try and tell you it’s an esoteric energy source but that is not true. Basically it boils down to breath control. Chi gung is a method of increasing lung capacity and breath control in synchronisation with movement to maximise power and health.
So that's why they always say "Chi is everywhere"
Qi can be expressed in many ways. In 。 wuxia fictional novels, Qi is a kind of energy that has existed since the birth of the universe. Qi exists in all matter. And Humans are the highest level of matter, so humans can cultivate this primitive energy to fight.
Of course, in reality, it is impossible for humans to use Qi as a source of energy.
The action choreographer was done Yuen Wo Ping who designed the king fu sequence for The Matrix and CTAHD.

This is one of my favourite films. I went through a phase of Kung Fu films a few years ago. This is such a wonderful homage to the genre. If you want to try something different the film Zatoichi is great. It’s set in Japan and follows the adventures of a blind swordsman. Brilliant, bizarre and often funny it even has a great tap dancing sequence. I still have the music they dance to as my ringtone 😊
It's only a tribute to the 26 original Zatoichi movies and the Zatoichi tv show though, which you should definitely check out if you enjoyed Kitano's tribute movie.

I'm glad to see others have mentioned Hero (2002), which is the most underrated and provocative Wuxia film of all time. Jet Li and Tony Leung (from Shang Chi) are incredible as the leads and it also features Donnie Yen in a brief but very memorable supporting role. So far only James Vs Cinema has reacted to it.
Agreed. "Hero" got overshadowed by Crouching Tiger, but I felt the multi-version storytelling and color grading for each story in Hero made it a more artistic/beautiful film.
Absolutely. CTHD has impressive choreography and I adore Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-Fat, but the screenplay was all over the place and ultimately felt hollow.
This film spoofs elements from many other films, including "The Shining," "Spiderman," "The Untouchables," "Gone with the Wind" and "The Blues Brothers" as well as general references to Looney Tunes, anime, and characters and dialogue from other popular Chinese martial arts films.
Hero (2004) with Jet Li is one of the best martial arts movies ever made in my humble opinion. I highly recommend you watch it
This movie takes one on a full circle of emotions and legit like a live action anime
the beast name was actually "the evil god of fiery cloud" coming from the same wuxia novel with the budha palm technique, the landlord couple name was yan guo and xiaolongnu, the protagonist of another wuxia novel the condor heroes, sadly many western audience won't catch these reference and many more, partly because the translation, they simply translate the couple name into paris and helen of troy lol

That's what Chow was going for. It's a classical wuxia story mixed with Hollywood Looney Toons. He said he imagined Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the Roadrunner as kungfu "perfect masters".
If you loved this, you should check out Stephen Chow's other movie Journey to the West. It doesn't have as much silly humor as this movie does but it has a beautiful story and some incredible music. If you want something just as silly, he also made a movie called Shaolin Soccer.

Shaolin soccer is right up the same area as this movie . That is another classic movie
Fun fact: Yuen Wah (the landlord) fought both Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung in Dragons forever.
He was also the stuntman that did the famous backflip kick in Enter the Dragon after Bruce Lee injured his back.
Yuen Qui (the landlady - no relation) was a retired actress who accompanied a friend to the audition, but got hired when someone recognised her.

@@XaeeD There's been outcry from many mainstream publishing and Asian American media about how it's racist; such as a review when it opened from Model Minority magazine. As an Asian American, I walked into that film expecting good-natured fun like Big Trouble in Little China, and what I saw was mean-spirited and perpetuated negative stereotypes throughout the whole film. If you have to ask me why I found it racist, I think perhaps you need to take another long hard look at the film.
It's actually more fun to go into this as a newcomer- every other actor here is well known in kung fu cinema, so as soon as you recognize them, you KNOW you're in for a good fight scene hahaha (the landlord for example, is from the same school as Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung hahaha)

Shoalin Soccer with subtitles jn mandarin is fantastic!
Fun Fact: Pig Sty Alley is based on the Walled City of Kowloon in Hong Kong which was basically a giant slum of interconnected buildings where poor people and immigrants would scrape by. The buildings were town down in the early 90s but the citizens remmember it quite fondly, the Japanese are obsessed with this place and there is a replica theme park in Japan.
The original choreographer for the film was Sammo Hung who grew up with Jackie Chan, he choreographed the first fight scene in Pig Sty Alley and eventually had to withdraw due to illness, Stephen Chow then brought in Yuen Woo Ping(legendary fight choreographer who also did The Matrix) to finish the rest of the film.
Really glad you enjoyed this film, it's one of my favourites and perhaps the most accessible Hong Kong film
I'd recommend the kung fu movie Five Deadly Venoms 1978. The Kung Fu fighters employ five different animal-based styles - centipede, lizard, scorpion, snake and toad. These different fighting styles result in some very unusual techniques and battle scenes. Like the Toad, his skin can not be cut, His skin is like armor.
Martial Arts are the unification of Kung-Fu, Karate, Judo, Aikido, Juijitsu. . . . .just to name a few those those. If I recall correctly Kung- fu got like 18 different Combat Styles. Snow Leopard, Tiger, Dragon, Crane, Eagle, Snake, Monkey. . . . .and so on
The first time i saw this movie i saw those 3 guys who looked harmless but skilled masters was cool and that was the first time i ever saw anyone use those rings as a weapon :o this movie is a gem :D

Martial Arts are like art of fighting, defense etc.
And Kungfu was a Chinese Martial arts and yeah Kung Fu was not solely for fighting, I think it also has philosophical or spiritual side(Note: I am not a Kungfu practitioner)
Martial art/arts just mean any form of combat in the same manner that moving through Water is swimming. Kung-fu (Gung fu) is a specific style/form of combat that is a martial art. It's like being more specific in how you swim, like saying the breast stroke, the butterfly, or the doggy paddle in swimming.
Kung Fu Hustle was a great surprise for me going to see it in theaters pretty much blind as well-did not expect it to go as it did, and I and my siblings and girlfriend back then laughed at and enjoyed the silliness and comedy. The turn at the end was an awesome twist of character. This movie is one of my all time fun favorites.
Highly recommend another Chinese film that was popular along with others already mentioned in the comments-Hero, starring Jet Li. An awesome film with beautiful cinematography and intriguing storyline, but alas, no comedy, but plenty of action. Even back then though, I thought perhaps there was an amalgam of political and cultural aspects of the nation in the ultimate message of the film, and I am unqualified to say what was cultural, or what was political, or if there was any difference. Looking at current world events, it's easy to see some of the sentiments that drive some of the themes of that film. It's an interesting discussion to be had about the movie within those contexts, which are obvious if you watch Hero.
You'd like a lot of other Jackie Chan movies. Especially his 80s and 90s movies. Lots of humor and creative fighting along with probably the most insane stunts ever put on film. The Legend of Drunken Master (1994) and Police Story (1985) are amazing!
You've probably been told this already but just in case, please watch Shaolin Soccer. It was released before Kung Fu Hustle. Fun fact, fans were asking for a sequel but he wanted to do Kung Fu Hustle so he put in that scene of him smashing the kid's ball saying, "No more soccer". His following film CJ7 is not as popular but I like it 🤷♂

'Martial Art' is a western term and broadly refers to any combat art. Boxing is a martial art. Fencing is a martial art. Archery is a martial art. 'Kung Fu' is a general term for a variety of Chinese martial arts, also known as 'Wushu'. The western term used to be 'Chinese Boxing'.
The actor of landlord, Yuen Wah, starred in Shang Chi (2021) as the old man in Ta Lo.
The actress of landlady, Yuen Qiu, starred in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974).
They are living legends of Kung Fu.

Just wanted to mention, martial arts did not originate in China. It was developed in ALL civilizations. From wrestling in greece, to boxing as early as Egyptian times. Kung fu was originated in China. Love the channel!
From what I've heard, the term "Kung Fu" literally means the muscle memory built from constant repetition of a series of physical movements -- any type of movements. So a musician playing an instrument is practicing kung fu, to build their muscle memory. I think it is only western media that has relegated it to meaning the varied types of martial arts.
The best way to translate Kung Fu is probably art of craft... It can be referred to anything not just martial arts
I think your comment earlier is probably a good comparison. The 'chi' based kung fu movies powers are kind of like the super hero abilities of this genre.
But you'll find there are a lot more serious tone movies through the years as well, but the fantasy kung fu powers aspect remains. Many Chinese martial arts styles are also inspired by animals, so you'll see them described as such.
One thing I was curious is if you noticed any difference in the phonetics of the language the characters were speaking. Many of them were speaking Cantonese, but others in Mandarin. I can only understand one of them, so to me it's like hearing people speaking French and Spanish with each other without skipping a beat in comprehension, and that seems so odd to me.
I never lived in China, so I don't know if that's what happens on a regular basis or not. But my understanding is that Mandarin is the common spoken language.
If you enjoy the comedic/slap stick variations, Shaolin Soccer or Tai Chi Zero, or any of the Jackie Chan movies are great choices
If you want to look at a more dramatic kung fu movie, then I'd recommend Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, or the Ip Man movie with Donnie Yen.
An interesting fact the actor for the Landlord was in Marvel's Shang-Chi he was the old archery man that gets his soul taken.
Easter eggs in Kung Fu Hustle
1. The Chinese cow boy at the openning scene is a very famous Chinese director Feng Xiaogang. He rarely in acting role, just support Stephen Chow.
2. The beggar in ending scene is Mr Yuen Cheung Yan, brother of famous martial arts director Yuen Woo Ping. He holding many books are Hong Kong popular martial arts novels….some kind of pulp fiction in martial arts.
3. Landlord lady named, Yuen Qiu, she learned martial art from the same master as Jackie Chan.
4. Landlord lady is ace as Bruce Lee in the car.
5. The Beast, the original name in Cantonese is 火雲邪神 (Evil God of fire-clouds), the villain of popular martial art novel 如來神掌 Buddha’s Palm, Bruce Leung Siu Lung acting the Beast, he was one of the famous action movie star at 70s, earlier than Bruce Lee era.
6. Stephen Chow had destroyed the football, he said “No more Soccer!”, he was self-deprecating his last movie Shaolin Soccer - Kung Fu Hustle must better!
7. Some Kung Fu moves styles like landlord lady - Powerful screaming, the Beast - Frog style rocket, the Bmaboo stick style of noodle master, these are tribute to the legend writer Jin Yong 金庸‘s literature.

I flat out love this movie. It's so damn fun. It's corny, but FUN and entertaining. There's some amazing action. As others have mentioned there are some great wuxia films like 'Crouching Tiger' and 'House of Flying Daggers'. I assume 'Ip Man' qualifies as well even though it's a tad different (but still terrific). But I think my personal favorite may be 'Flying Swords of Dragon Gate' . There are quite a few. Although the one thing I must mention with some when it comes to dub/sub....when it comes to things like anime I'm almost always a dub first because it's just easier to get into the arc when I can listen instead of having to read, but when it comes to foreign movies -- especially this movie in particular -- I'm so glad you went with sub. There's just something special about watching movies how they were originally intended. I just find it makes this movie more enjoyable.

Stephen Chow's 2001 movie Shaolin Soccer is very much in the same style.
Almost as good, as long as you watch the subtitled version. The English dub I have seen was badly done. It may be a little less aimed at a western audience than Kung Fu Hustle, with more references to Chinese culture and media. But still enjoyable.
There's even a small reference when Chow's character first appears in this movie, flattening the kid's football and saying there is no more of that. Maybe the public had been hoping for a sequel to Shaolin Soccer, and this was his way of saying "No!"? Still hoping though. Shaolin Soccer - 25 Years Later, the Next Generation

if i was to cast a live action Uncle Iroh for Avatar, i would most definitely use the big bad guy from this film. Siu-Lung Leung with a beard would be perfect. he's still more than capable of pulling the physical feats, that Iroh would perform through the seasons, in his 70's. he holds a great cadence to the characters that he portrays. Just a magical aura of "fuck with me and find out", while still being able to portray incredible kindnesss and understanding (in his other roles)

There is a number of chinese break down of this film on youtube. They went more in depth with the explaination with frame, shooting angles, tributes and tempo. One thing you mentioned that, alot of people missed out is the fact that the same goes for "Mr Beast" and "landlord", they all have no names, yet you are invested in all of them. Even "Jane" is not a name, it is just a meme term for girl of certain appearance.
Mary, the old man with the kung fu book's isn't actually ripping people off. the movie implies that he can see the potential of someone and so he offers them booklets they have potential learning, Sing had vast potential he was just a late bloomer
I think you’d really enjoy Shaolin Soccer. Stephen Chow did that too. It’s just as crazy.
The palm he did to the toad man at the end, was from the little book he bought from the homeless man when he was a kid. So, he technically did not get scammed. At the end when I saw the homeless man with more books. I GASPED so load. Was awesome.
For something like this but even crazier watch Kung Pow: Enter the Fist.
What I love is how the Boss battle ends
It doesn’t end with the Beast defeated with the traditional beating or death
All the Beast ever wanted was to have a new challenge. He learned so much kung fu, what else could he learn.
Because when you’re simply the best and you’ve learned everything, life seems boring and meaningless.
Nothing else matters except the next fight or death.
Sing showed him that you can still learn something new. And it doesn’t have to be fighting. It can be something as beautiful as a flower trick.
So when the Beast asked him how he did that trick, Sing said he’ll teach him something new.
The Beast found new meaning, purpose and a worthy master.
Fun fact: Gong Fu just translate to mastery of something, so doctors and scholars can be “Kung fu” masters too.
In Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Shaun has this poster on his wall. And then his final move against the evil dragon was very reminiscence of the buddha‘s palm move at the end of this movie.
The fighting choreographer is Yuen Woo Ping, and the beggar, Yuen Cheung Yan, is his brother. Their father was the late Yuen Siu Tien, whose most famous role was the Beggar Su in Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master.

In the movie, the two assassins hired by the Axe Gang play an instrument called the "guzheng." This traditional Chinese instrument produces sound waves that can be used to harm or even kill people. However, director Stephen Chow visualized these sound waves using specific imagery of knives and swords. For instance, quick musical notes represent sharp blades, while muffled notes resemble blunt weapons or fists.
Through this visualization, the director emphasizes the varying skill levels among three characters: the coolie, the tailor, and the noodle chef. The coolie has the lowest skill level, evident when the assassins play the guzheng four times, cutting a tree branch, a basin, a cat, and a street lamp. The coolie remains oblivious until the very end, turning around too late, unable to perceive the sound waves, and ultimately losing his head.
The tailor's skill is slightly better than the coolie's, able to recognize the sound waves only when they are very close, reacting urgently to evade. The noodle chef, with even higher skill, can see the sound waves from the beginning and adeptly uses weapons to counter and dodge them. The landlady possesses the highest skill level, able to clearly see the entirety of the sound waves.
The Raid and The Raid 2 are two martial arts movies that are a definite must watch. The fight choreography is insane

FYI. In Hong Kong, there is this famous writer, Jing Yong, a novel book writer, wrote a series of Kungfu style stories, which based on ancient Chinese history. This movie took many references from the book of Condor Heroes.
First there is this Xiao Long Nu (Dragon Girl) and Yang Guo (Yang family name, Guo means regrets) reference, the Lion Roar from a hero Golden Hair Lion King, the Yin and Yang symbol on the ground from TaiChi. The Frog Style, actually called Toad Kungfu, which is a powerful and poisonous skil created by the Master Ou Yang Feng (frictional). The Buddha Palm is reference to another story of the same name, where a hero learn the 9 styles of Buddha Palm.
The beggar selling secret kungfu manual scripts, is the same actor of another flim the King of Beggar Sect Su Qi Er of the same actor Stephen Chow. Su Qi Er in the story is a champion martial artist, but is illiterate, his father bought off the examiner so he can have a post in the Emperor's court. But was found out and as punshment, he will be a beggar for the rest of his life.
Do you know the 3 kungfu master in the flim is actual masters in real life who won many kungfu competition in China. Plus the Beast is also a Champion Master Kungfu. Stephen Chow himself also practise Kungfu, but no many know, as his style of acting are more comedy then martial arts.

Dear Mary This is Hong Kong movie not main land Chinese movie. Although the studio set was set up in China. But all it's creation, script, production is Hong Kong . Even language is.
BTW the Landlord is also in Shang Chi in a much grumpier role lol
"Older brother" is like an Asian thing, usually with maybe 5 years age difference or less.
In Cantonese, "Tai Lo" is older brother, "Sai Lo" is younger brother. Could be like in a martial arts school where you have a student younger or older than you. Same applies to a gang or a "family".
In Korea, the equivalent would be "Hyung" for male to older male (like coworkers or in a gang), "Oppa" for young females to older males. I don't recall if there are words to address the younger person in Korean.
In Japan, something like the gangster use of "Aniki" for elder brother but not a real brother could be used, similar to Korea's "Hyung". Alternatively, Onii-san could be used ("chan" instead of "san" if the relationship is closer) from a young female to an older male (not too old like an uncle though).
