I get the need for realistic avatars in vr but like common I don't want to be ugly in VR too haha!
Bro that's what I'm saying, I already see my face enough...
why be yourself when you can be kermit right ?
I feel this, why have the same glorious beard you have in real life, when you can have an even MORE GLORIOUS beard in vrchat? Don't suppose the hyper realistic avatars would have crazy crazy customization? Like head shape, eye shape/ type etc. Yanno, still hyper realistic, but however we want it to look
I can't think of many people who would prefer it over a webcam. Most regular consumers aren't going to want to look the way they do in real life; at most it'd be a novelty that isn't worth the cost. And I can't think of a type of company that would prefer an expensive photorealistic headset over a laptop with a webcam. The only market I could imagine for that sort of thing is maybe military. The next closest market would be companies that produce physical goods, using them to demonstrate concepts for prototypes without having to actually build them, but they wouldn't need a photorealistic avatar. The most they'd need is some company-standard blank slate avatar or something.
The point of realistic avatars is to cater to certain eventual VR demographics and/or social apps. How many people are gonna put the funny meme avatar they use on twitter as their LinkedIn profile pic?
The hyper real human representation inside VR is probably being aimed more at businesses. Aside from being able to make some really cool Ted Talks and eLearnings, I suspect many companies Meta is trying to sell to don't want to buy into the concept of doing all their meetings in VR using cartoon avatars.
That is probably the objective, but more representational avatars will eventually have to be adopted by the community eventually for it to expand to the main stream. My prediction is that many businesses will use dress codes, rather than mandating hyperrealism, but the technology is very impressive.
This is almost a requirement to do business in VR. Otherwise companies will stick with video conferencing (zoom, etc.) because you can read peoples reactions much more intuitively with real faces and expressions. VR has other business advantages (such as using virtual white boards, etc.) but one of the main things that VR will have to compete with the ability to see real reactions/expressions. Outside of business, the real avatar probably has less value as many people don't even like using their real name in gaming, etc.
If businesses all used cat girl avatars, meetings would be a lot more bearable.
@@Teddingtin I wouldn't be surprised if there was at least one company already doing that. Though outside of indie game studios entirely staffed by gen z employees, it might be a tough sell. xD
@@o6dukeleto I agree entirely. I also suspect most companies will stick with video conferencing regardless because it's easier to set up and has less steps. Even after the widespread availability of inexpensive VR headsets with accurate facial capture I doubt the technology will be trusted. :/
I kind of love how goofy the Quest looks with that attachment for color passthrough. Like a mad scientist vibe.
There is a kickstarter going right now for Virtue One, XR Glasses. Those are something I would use for travel work to potentially be more productive with a smaller ultrabook.
very good idea of use for such a small headset
They look really cool, but it's not true XR. It's a display in a pair of glasses with no sense of 3D.
I'm not really a fan of VR glasses for two reasons: No way to block out outside light. Also, the FOV is bound to be bad. I want MORE FOV, not less.
@@Powerbyte7 I feel ya. For me it would be more of a replacement for using small screens when traveling and working.
@@Powerbyte7 it seemed like it supports 3D and the virtual screens you see are not right up against your face they are something like 3 meters in front of you. But yeah no 6DOF or even 3DOF .
I work for a VR company and they scanned my face to be used as an NPC. It doesn't freak me out as much but I wish they could scan my body as well because the modeler attached my head to a weirdly-shaped human body. I like the hair they gave me tho.
i’ve always thought humans were weirdly shaped as well 🦎
how are you gonna drop a bomb like that and not tell us what game it is lol
I wish they can scan my whole body in 12k resolution along with 4 inch little man...
@Lil Yeet Dang gottem. Mom get the camera!
How does one also work for a VR company. I'm willing to work lol no but seriously I will.
This was an exiting video. Holographic lenses that reproduce reality even better. And I thought just two pictures are enough. Amazing. Yes I'm looking forward to be able to use this technology. Don't care much for avatars as I use my VR to escape reality, not to meet people...
A pair of glasses sized VR-spectacle would be a dream come true.
Tuesday Newsday on a Tuesday! A miracle! Fantastic video as always!
Favts
I really hate how no big tech company mentions fov. Oh yes smaller headsets higher clarity. Making everything look better but never have i ever heard any improvments in the fov department. They're probably going butcher the fov for clarity. I prefer high fov. I do not want to play games looking through a spetsnaz helmet. For the love of vr please, please dont butcher fov while trying to achive better clarity
honestly, I think valve an pimax have been the only companies that have pulled off high fov headsets so far, I wish more companies would make that a priority too
Yeah I agree. I'm all for higher clarity but it means less if it feels like I'm looking through a scope
Amen!
Agree. Smaller FOV ruins immersion completely.
I'm pretty sure the glasses and such are close anough to your eyes that they don't have to be massive for good fov. idk tho I know nothing
Well I mean these glasses cant really stop me from looking stupid in VR…
xD
LMAO
You don’t have to wear anything to look stupid

The "into the metaverse" movie name drop was pretty sick, also this is exciting news as always. Thanks Thrill :)
Having the ground shake while playing a VR game would be so cool
Honestly, even if VR glasses would be the new norm, I’m still using headsets because at least people can tell you are in a different world rather than just thinking you have gone insane
@Lil Yeet how do you know. Headsets probably have even more potential than some glasses anyway.
If the weight of the glasses is less than the weight of current thick models then I think that's essential and could make the lightweight holographic glasses far better. Still I don't want to fry my brains with an increased amount of microwaves (guessing the glasses might be cordlessly connected to PC).
Future of VR is looking WILD
The best VR youtube channel. Love your material Thrill. Keep up the work.
Can't wait for that kat walk video I've been real excited about it ever since I saw its release trailer.
Really eager to hear your thoughts on the KAT Walk C2!
The hyper realistic avatar will be great for work and seeing family in the Metaverse. Definitely paves the way for more formal or truly personal connection.
Totally! And I think it also can be a great base technology for realistic looking avatars that don't look like yourself for games as well.
@@CakePrincessCelestia That just made me think of scanning cosplayers in full body outfits haha
holographic displays, mixed with cloud computing will be an interesting mix from a stand alone all in one stand point.
But it wouldn't be standalone
@@watson15243 Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
@@TheThorns like standalone has to run stuff alone you know if it needs 1gb connection to work properly it's not alone ..... It's nice yes but juts has other definition
I know the "mobile vr" was a floppy but the problem in it was the lackluster controls, bulkiness of even the simplest setups and the fact that you actually needed compatible phones.... But a tech like that on the video would be the perfect to pair with a phone. Any glasses would be mobile vr and pc vr at the same time without actually needing any of the internal bulkiness from the needed component of processing.
I’d like hyper realistic characters for games and such. That may be a lot more processing power though., particularly if the mesh resolution say quadrupled. The current state of characters look rather cartoonish, even in Replika. It would just be more interesting if the characters looked like real life people
For PCVR it should be possible and things like VorpX give a taste of that, but following the money it's better for a studio to cater development to things like the Quest 2 which doesn't have much power thus the PS2 graphics. A standalone headset able to render modern graphics would basically have to be an Xbox Series X strapped to your head.
Processing power may eventually become a non issue entirely. The reason being that the rise of 5G and game streaming services (like Stadia or GeForce) would allow anybody with a good internet connection to stream ultra graphics. Once this is streamlined, hyper realistic characters wouldn’t be too much of a problem. All your VR would have to do is focus on its tracking and screen quality
In my opinion I really like the idea of having a hyper human representation of myself virtually. Sometimes I do just want to be myself, and in Virtual Reality I find that difficult when I have to look like a skeleton or whatever.
It’s also huge and useful for serious business and social uses. It’s something VR has, but is hard to realise through for the average person through avatars. In a pandemic world, imagine seamlessly transitioning into VR communication just by launching a ‘classroom’ app or something, while being able to read peoples face expressions. It feels minor but it’s actually a huge step in the right direction for a lot of people.
this but I want my face to open up like the doll in Ghost in the Shell 2 in the middle of a business meeting.
I wouldnt mind if we had reaaaally realistic avatars that were also stylized, cartoonish, or even anime. Im a big fan of Miko and the work done on her so im hoping someone develops avatars for vr like this
@@MyFictionalChaos Honestly virtual stylisation could also be possible one day. Just like filters do already on snapchat or tiktok.
@@MyFictionalChaos It would be reality, if realistic avatars catch up. Why I'm sure about it? Because this seems like easy way to monetize
that picture of the gears through the headset lens had me tripping it took me a few to realise its vr
my brain: why are we looking at gears
Dude same XD it's incredible how good it is!
Ohhh, looking forward to the C2 review!
Great video once again I get so excited when I see a new upload!
Fascinating, Thrill do you ever think you'll design your own hardware?
It's possible he might but he would need the money to do so. And time
Even if they move to holographic displays, you will still want a goggle type form factor. The immersion will be lost completely if you dont block out your peripheral vision and outside light. Lighter screens that produce less heat are great, but we desperately need some more ventilation while still blocking out the outside light.
Exactly this. Maybe they could design cups to the glasses similar to swimming goggles. Something like that anyway. The future of VR does look amazing though, if implemented correctly
Super excited for the Katwalk c2 review!!
Holographic displays have actual depth which gives realism.
But the most important thing there is that it should *drastically reduce eye strain.*
I look forward to your Katwalk C2 preview
Man, I still just can't wait for when either gloves or hand tracking become universal enough to just replace joysticks and buttons altogether.
And don't forget about perfect inside-out tracking on all headsets, because, let's face it, tracking base stations will either become obsolete or the enthusiast's hyper precision tool in a couple years..
7:40 this also got me thinking, with how flawless airlink is if you have the right setup, I hope oculus makes a PCVR set in the future that's extremely small and practically saves all space for battery and screen resolution and has all of it's power dependant on your PC through airlink
More likely force feedback gloves so they can emulate buttons. Lucid gloves can present as index controllers. Once those take off, it won't be long for others to follow, esp given they're cheaper to make then buying the controllers. Apps will need to stop using grip as just another button but that's just a matter of software.
Until Meta or someone creates fbt with inside out tracking, we'll always need outside tracking for that. I have yet to see anything replace base stations for that purpose. Even cameras on controllers still lack what base stations can do. In fact, I think Meta still hasn't found a solution that can be all in one while there's been one since 2018 now.
@@stormvr1070 Would be possible to have base stations with cameras as well, though. And I guess that will come eventually after the cams on controllers.
@@CakePrincessCelestia yeah
I bet that's what Valve will do. Have both.
Yes! I often forget I’m using WiFi to stream Vr, although the xr2 is still working it’s ass off to decode the video custom silicon for that work load would be a must for that use case
I believe VR will go from goggles to glasses, just like technology gets smaller as time goes on (phones, computers, etc)
Someday I bet we'll be able to enter vr completely without any goggles like in SAO maybe
@@kuma8039 the only way to do that is to have some kind of brain chip interface. Who is going to volunteer to have their skull opened up for vr games

Thank you Thrill, great content as always!
PS: That game Valem did wasn't that stupid, maybe when we get more XR headsets, that could be a good idea xD

I can see why some people would want those hyper realistic avatars but for the most part why would you want to look like yourself out of all the possibilities?

I love the idea of realistic avatars, will definitely just have that in case when needed, and for the rest just have my own avatar
I’m really looking forward to the super compact car displays. Imagine the amount of features that a company could cram into a headset if lenses and displays didn’t take up an enormous amount of space.
Can't wait for your Kat Walk C2 video!
Good job a Tuesday news day on a Tuesday good job thrill!
One of my concerns regarding the glasses is how well they will stick to you, and also the part of the community whom sleep in vr.
For how they look right now, I'd assume that they would put either some sort of curved frame at the ears if it's too heavy, or straight up just weights at the back. Given how the holographic strips are hanging up off the lenses, if they can be curved then they likely would either be curved around the top of the head, or the sides by the temples or the frame of the glasses. I'd assume you wouldn't want to sleep with these on (as you would with normal glasses) as they probably won't be sturdy enough for if you move in your sleep.
@@fordalels yea exactly, i like the size of the index or aero cause you can just sleep with them on without having to worry about accidentally breaking them
i didn’t know people slept in vr? what games do they get on and what headset do people use?
@@crindee717 Quests, Indexes, Vives. heck ive even seen someone sleep with a pimax on. mostly happens in vrchat friends+ instances
Isn't one of the reasons for the bulky headset designs to block out external light? Even on my quest 2 which is quite small in comparison is it annoying when light comes in through the nose groove. I wonder how the holographic lenses will deal with external lighting.
Awesome vid as always!
I'm more excited by those tiny VR lenses because I might never have to buy an updated pair of glasses again, just turn a knob or tweak a setting to change the focus on the screen.
5 minute Kickstarter goal for an expensive VR peripheral?? I'm so glad VR is taking off like it has been the last few years. I got an index around it's launch and haven't really put a lot of time on it (due to not having many games to choose from). I wish we had a steam-like platform where every game creator could mutually come to some kind of agreement and get rid of all this exclusivity and get us access to more titles to play.
Steam is trying to be that. It's everyone else thats trying to be exclusive
@@pixelfairy Well it's good to know I'm already in the right place. I wanna play Lone Echo, I was stunned when I found out it was exclusive.
Those holographic VR glasses from NVIDIA look great! Let's create the demand they need to put money and research in this system!
ngl, some super compact headset/glasses which i could just wear like glasses on the top of my head, and some super small controller (which doesn't need alot) just to basically use as some computer to wear on the go etc would be absolutely cool. It would be a really neat way and something we could maybe even use as often as our phones, just having a full on visually stunning system (which probably wouldn't have alot of functionality initially) however would be something that would interest alot of people in the industry especially if it's reasonably affordable and produced enough for people to casually wear/use in public.
I'm pretty new to VR and I've only ever used the Valve Index and Oculus Quest 2, but I wouldn't even mind using a full on helmet if it meant an amazing FOV, higher resolution, and was wireless, so these holographic glasses form factor "headsets" are super exciting.
About realistic avatars, I think it would do a lot for me if I could hang out with people I already know in real life in VR with these avatars. Nowadays I live pretty far away from my friends and family so it would be cool to be able to hang out with them and see their faces. I already play games online with my friends, so while hanging out in VRChat does wonders, after some time it doesn't feel very different than just hanging out with them in any other game where they're represented by a game avatar.
I'm GREATLY looking forward to your treadmill 2.0 video. It's not super high on my desires list for VR, but if it ends up being really great with little downside, I could see myself paying $1k for it. That's what the index itself cost after all.
That said, what IS super high on my VR desires list is lighter, but more importantly, much clearer headsets. So the holographic thing interests me. I have to wonder though, will it REALLY kick off and be the new standard? I've never heard of the "light has depth" thing before and as far as I knew stereoscopy was THE way your eyes/brain interpret depth. It seems to work perfectly fine as is, so I wonder if the extra complexity and presumably expense is even worth it. However, if they are right in that this is the best/only way to get hyper-resolution on small and light lenses to the point of glasses form factors, that alone would be worth it, absolutely.
Facebook's hyper-realistic avatars: big old NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to that. For the reasons you said, and also for the reason that there is NO WAY that won't be uncanny valley nightmare fuel in the real (heh) world of VR as opposed to their lab demos.
I've never really been an attention seeker and have looked down on that kind of stuff, but I gotta admit seeing myself in a video feels pretty cool :D
I don't believe glasses will replace VR headsets, but I do believe they will be essential in the mixed reality industry.
I agree. With glasses you still have interference from your peripheral vision.
Disagreed. Most people and I are waiting for vr to be way more comfortable and practical to wear. Being able yo use ar and vr paired with my pc on the same lightweight comfortable device is all I want. The headsets are wayyy too heavy currently, adding over 1 pound of weight on your head. Will we jump straight from vr headsets to ar/vr glasses immediately? No, they will continue to get smaller incrementally just like smart phones. All the way until contacts come out. Now do I think contacts will overtak glasses? Not at all. They never will. Even colored contacts are uncomfortable, stuffing them with tech sounds even more uncomfortable, but they will exist, and after that? Replacing our eyeballs with vr/ar hardware. Maybe 50 years in the future I predict we will go straight cyberpunk. But for now I'm just waiting for better lighter more comfortable ar/vr hardware.
Much love 💜
To think that we're already this far in vr in just a few years amazing. I bet there'll be something like full dive not too far in the future maybe like 30 or 40 years
If Vr glasses fit as well as normal glasses do then this is going to be amazing
The headset part of VR definitely has to go if they want VR to be a mass market
I think goggles is the obvious sweet spot for the technology
Hi Thrill
Just want to say a huge thanks to you for doing these, i absolutely love them. I have my Quest 2 in repairs currently because of a dead pixel and the right controller joystick drifting. I had it in repair for a month, and during the past week, i watched the past monthS of Tuesday Newsday and i feel really caught up, excited for VR, still hating Meta, and became actually excited to try out the new ASW 2.0 update, cuz the 1.0 had tons of issues. I saw that you're in the movie and chill discord server, so in that world, if i'm looking at the screen with a camera looking from inside a moving car trough a window, the moving image messes up ASW 1.0 and sometimes slaps the image out of the screen where the video is actually playing. I'm excited to see if this huge update managet to fix that, and also all the other stuff they did to the software in the past 4-6 weeks. (I didn't play much VR before i sent it in for repairs, so i'm out of date with Quest 2 software.)
Question: How often did joysticks break for you and friends? And how do you repair the joysticks, stopping them from drifting like crazy?
Anyways, much love, excited for this week's VR news, and have an awesome day! :)
Sorry if the wording is weird and confusing, i sent this from my phone.
(I wish i could pay you in more than just likes and watchtime, but i can't really. Love your vids.)
Always love me a good Tuesday Newsday.
I like the differentiation between reality and VR. Once you start to make characters hyper real you loose that and it will just merge with reality.
I guess this is more for business meetings. Can’t imagine them being done with cartoon characters.
I am never going to let my job create a 3D model of me for work purposes. That's way beyond requiring you to consent to company policy.
There should be an option for a basic skin.
Still, imagine if all your colleagues were just basic skin avatars. Would be pretty hard to connect with them on a human level
@@GT-tj1qg or, crazy idea, you don’t spend your whole day in VR and talk to a real person face to face for a change. We made business in the nineties, with only phones and real people. Unimaginable

The music at 10:30 ish is a bop, love the choice of music
QOTW: Do you think all VR games should have a full body/avatar connected to the player or do some games work/feel better with just floating hands?
I feel like screaming.

Isn't what you are after the vive eye headset with a mouth tracking attachment?
Rally really cool concept
I really dream about those glasses. It's very interesting to try them. I hope to be able to save up someday)
QOTW: I dont really like how meta is kinda cockblocking a lot of new games to their pcvr software, your thoughts?
I think it's odd too that they have abandoned their PCVR development, they believe they need to focus on standalone. Might also have something to do with their layoffs.
How are they doing this? Are they blocking steam?
@@pixelfairy no.
@@pixelfairy no, they’re just preventing newer releases from going onto rift software and making it quest exclusive. Take RE4VR for example.
Just open up the sales section in the Rift software. It's broken since early 21 and there basically haven't been any proper sales anymore on Rift games either on the website. It looks abandoned, it feels abandoned, it is abandoned. It's especially sad since the Oculus exclusives like Lone Echo, Asgards Wrath or Stormland belong to the best VR games that do exist. I just hope that they'll put more focus there though with the AirLink going, especially with the dongle they're going to come up with to get it going hassle-free. I mean, what's the point in all that when they don't deliver software themselves?
I'm really hoping that as valve works on something new for vr that that they also come out with a wireless solution for the index
Wireless but not Standalone pls.
Love the music man
national day and Tuesday Newsday. What a combo!❤
We're in the deciding time for the ultimate direction VR will take. We're seeing some of the most powerful tech companies in the world dive in and push it forward as much as they can. Pushing and improving the hardware, the software, the usability, the features and the experience to the limits of current day technology. So whether VR becomes cemented for a long time as a niche pastime or as pervasive as it is in something like Ready Player One I think will be decided in the next five years. The main hurdle to overcome, for me, is convenience. The ability to pick up a small pair of glasses, pop them on and and go is what will suddenly widen the audience, most people simply don't want to strap a large headset to their face, but a pair of glasses? No problem.
For me, the Quest 2 solved the convenience issue. The main problem I see now is space, such as what the Kat walk aims to solve. Not everyone can afford to dedicate an entire room to being completely empty for VR, so until they can make something that makes full immersion VR not require full amounts of space, be it using a omni-treadmill, or an anime-esque Nervegear, or something else then I don't see it growing much more. Yeah, having nothing but a pair of glasses for VR would be great, but it doesn't change the fact I'm going to punch my wall if I don't force myself to remember it's there.
0:28 They actually should hire some guys to fix the terrible UI that keeps getting worse with every update...
0:31 Probably, again, US only... :/
11:04 What a deal though! Anyone who's got access to the sales and is interested without being against Metabookulus and their current account policy, should definately take a shot at it right now.
But since I'm not in the US and want to get a 256G version, that's off the plate for me.
12:58 I wanna have a hyper realistic pone avatar!

This is what it's all about. New stuff, getting better all the time. Big VR fan 😎
The small vr headsets are really starting to give me Sao vibes, which I'm super excited to see in the near future
This doesnt make any Sense at all. In SAO they use a Brain-Computer-Interface with a fat helmet. This is more like an AR and Portable Vibe.
I think I would dislike work more if they forced you to use a hyper realistic avatar. Work would be pretty cool having a cat girl for a boss

My favorite are diving vr experience- the mask just makes it more real.
Weight and size of a ski mask seems ideal to me.
It's going to be fun to see what people choose as their vr look. ( avatar)
As somebody who lives far from my family and has a community of real-life friends scattered around the world, the possibility to meet "them" (i.e. an hyper-realistic avatar of them) in a virtual environment (maybe even with some haptic feedback that allows the illusion of "physical contact" would be bliss.
There are more uses for VR than just fun and work...
Huh neat I was just checking if a new video came out and bam
Amazing news!
Accommodation is one of the reasons I have a hard time in VR right now. I've always worn glasses and had sensitive eyes where I can feel the focus, and I can feel my eyes straining at the incorrect focal plane of objects outside of the single flat focal plane presented right now. It's wonderful if everything I have to focus at stays this offish distance away from me, but anything comes closer and my eyes strain and I become dizzy almost instantly. I mean I push through it, but it's never gone away.
This is really cool. I never thought of standard Vr as being only binocular disparity, and that holo uses light tracing as well as binocular disparity. I'm so curious how it mimics this on a 2d plane. Are holo lenses fully 2d? Do they themselves have depth or parallax? I think if, of course, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is if we can make sure our FOV is beyond our peripheral vision (no light leak). Thanks for vid!
I am looking foward to the small glasses like ones for sure. I cant really do vr cause it hurts way too much and if i do it for long periods. i can have lasting pain and head aches so i really stoped all together
It makes perfect sense. Slim down the headwear and move the sensors to moving extremities, fingers included .
My favorite part is probably the treadmill and smaller head sets. The thing that I am looking for in a head set is clear vision and light weight.
I gotta say the notion of a smaller much comfier pcvr headset excites me. If we do get anything tiny in the coming years I hope we can connect it wirelessly like over wifi for instance. Would be fantastic for just hanging out in vr.
I really need the Tuesday newsday intro in infinite loop 😩
YES, i will buy this for sure! The pressure and rubbing of the headsets on my face gave me acne!
When I get paid.. And if I can sell a couple more things I got.... I'm getting the kat walk c2+. I also decided to buy a kinect for the very cheap full body tracking experience just to get my foot in the door in that aspect!
Good morning to you to :)
That video was incredible. You've surpassed Hollywood.
One thing I did like is the avatar system for the Xbox One Kinect Sports Rivals game. Using the Kinect 2.0 to do a face scan then using equivalent prefab parts to reconstruct the scanned face, and the ability to change the avatar back and forward from an adult to a kid and vise versa. Can also allow for using that data for applying the scanned face to various avatar characters. Like putting the scanned face on a Na'vi from the Avatar movie or a khajiit from Elder Scrolls Online. And various other types of beings. Could also scan a hamster or a dog face or other something like that and apply it to a human avatar or a Na'vi or other types of beings. Could also use the stereoscopic cameras on a inside out tracking headset to do the face scanning.
Those shoes look dope af
holographic display + affordable treadmill + haptic glove controller = I'm interested in VR. Can't wait for the tech to mature a little more.
