    I definitely relate to this, I used to be a working student when I was 12 and I was tasked with watering the barn , teaching lesson students how to tack up and bring horses in and out of the barn (plus occasionally holding a horse for the farrier) I was not payed, I was promised that I would be able to exercise a lesson pony in exchange but it rarely ever happened. Plus most of the horses I was handing were ottbs and otsbs (off the track thoroughbreds and Standardbreds) these horse were often no older than 3 years old and would regularly rear or try to bolt off while leading and had terrible anxiety, the experience definitely made me able to handle those situations better now but no 12 year old should have to do that. And the most ironic part is when I got my horse (who is an ottb) the barn manager said I’m “too young to handle that much horse” like girl you had be handling far worse horses when I was 12 😂

    Agree SO MUCH with no shortcuts in training. I had a tb who was super green and everyone told me I needed to get a harsher bit for him but just took some time to help him understand gently and he was looking so much better in his plain snaffle🥰

    I was at one barn and they constantly said "smack them" "beat them" and I thought that was normal until I got to my new barn and they give better instructions to not rely on a whip and tell me when I'm using it too much, I much needed that switch

    Btw, I actually just moved barns because I was paying for lessons to exercise their recovering horse (walk/trot when I’m able to canter and jump 2ft) and then doing 5 hours of barn chores with no payment, many other boarders were pressured into caring for the horses, but only the kids, and so many have left because of the pressure even though they are paying the barn. Will miss them but it’s for the better haha

    • @justinepalmer
      @justinepalmer  Před 7 měsíci +2

      It's so easy to carry that guilt, however we must try and forgive ourselves. I know how saddening it is looking back on things, but when we're being taught to abuse horses and thinking that's "the way", the fault stems from the bad trainers and guidance.

    Thank you for posting this! Love that you love horses and not just use them. Finding the right trainer who is fair to the horse is extremely important. At the barn, I got my horse from the one trainer who taught me right and the other told me to pull on the outside reign to stop him bucking. It did not stop him and he had a pelham. now he had a bitless bridle and rarely bucks.

    This is my first time commenting on your channel but I’ve been following your journey for over 5 years, and I too had this realization around 3 years ago after leaving an abusive barn, and I was always secretly hoping that it would happen to you too since I enjoyed your vlogs and videos so much! I absolutely love your ability to reflect back on past mistakes and experiences, and keep in mind that it doesn’t make you a bad person, but rather it allows you to move forward with more knowledge and self-reflection on how to do things right. Very proud of you and you should be very proud of yourself for this, keep going!! 💕🙌🏼

    • @justinepalmer
      @justinepalmer  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Thank you! It's super respectful of you to have maybe seen things I was doing wrong but also didn't hate on me for it. We all need to work through various experiences and keep learning until we find what's best. It may have taken me years and years to finally be properly exposed to horsemanship, but now I will hold these values for my entire life. I stress the "you don't know better until you know better" because we're all learning and can only be held accountable for what we've been exposed to. And it just took me a long time until I was finally taught it! So I hope by making videos like these, it will help others come to find it as well, and to recognize abuse when they are being taught it as "training".

    A thing that I want to add to the forcing your horse into stressfull situations: competitions are often a huge stress factor for horses. As prey animals, the many people, noises and horses they don't know along with a completely new environment that they're immediately expected to perform well in can be very overwhelming for horses

    Oh my gosh, I totally understand what you mean about the bad working student positions. I checked out a barn once who's going rate for lessons was 50$. They said that if I wanted to be a working student, I had to clean stalls in order to get lessons if I couldn't pay for them. They said that each stall done was worth 2$, so I had to do -- count 'em! --25 stalls! Not to mention having to compete with other working students to be able to get that many stalls, because they only had 13 and plenty of other people trying to grab the same opportunity. I'm so glad I decided to pursue other options, cuz my gosh that was crazy!

    Quick note: I do not agree with hitting your horse hard, and doing it continuously, but a small tap with the crop will not do anyting to affect them negatively. I can wave the crop in my pony's face and she'll basically fall asleep. I do NOT agree with tapping a horse with a proper lunging whip, because those can actually hurt badly, no matter how much force you put into it. Your horse should be okay with you stroking the whip along their back, and not be afraid of it. Respect and fear are 2 different things

    This is interesting! I feel like I haven’t had any exposure to any other barns, so sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s good and bad.
    An issue I have with my barn is the lease prices, as you have to lease to show. Is this normal? Luckily I have IEA so…

    • @justinepalmer
      @justinepalmer  Před 8 měsíci

      That's exactly why I made this video, I'm glad it reached you who may not have had the chance to get exposed to other things yet! I would say leasing to show is not the norm. Usually, from my experience/areas at least, if you want to show they will let you show on a lesson horse. You may have to "rent" the horse for the day but I've never seen where it is required to have a monthly lease to show a horse.
