- ( www.TFLcar.com ) Many of you pointed out that Mike's GTI had some nasty exhaust tips. Embarrassed by his carelessness, Mike decided to find out what causes that buildup, and the best way to clean it.
Special thanks to Harvey from The Boost Creep Ltd. Link to his site: www.theboostcreepltd.com/

The cleaning starts at 6:00 , thank me later
Haha, I was thinking the same thing. Lots of foreplay.
Thank you later
PHAHAHAHA!
Thank you, sir!
This video could've been a one minute video.
Exactly too much pointless talking
Yup
😂
I came to watch how to clean the tailpipe, I watched a guy google how to clean a tail pipe.
Don’t knock the guy. He has 300k + subscribers, you don’t get that with simple one minute videos, it’s called content lmao
video was WAYYY to long for such a basic task.
It's 8 minutes it's not WAYYY to long now 6 hours is WAYYY TO long
It's all about that CZcams watch time revenue, short videos don't produce revenue.
@@mpa1931 below 10 minutes and your revenue is next to nothing. Over 10 minutes and you are in the green zone. Watch hours contribute to it as well as sub count. Last but not least is viewer retention meaning how long people actually keep watching. If many skip and/or leave soon you can have everything else in the upper half yet YT will pay you little again. The YT content creation rules are crazy and TBH I am still surprised that people can make any money off of CZcams to actually bother doing videos.
So if you do a "straight to the point" video that will be about 2-3 minutes long you can forget to ever get any money from YT :D I mean like literally never. Even if the video will have one day tons of views then it will be collected over the course of many years plus you won't have a steady production to keep up with YT rules of monetization. Simply because short videos are being skipped the same like long videos except when you have a short video then the skipping will hurt your statistics way more as if you had a redundand yet longer video. Crazy that if you think YT (and other platforms) want you to waste time and if you create opportunities to waste others time you get rewarded in the end. Ridiculous...
Hadn’t cleaned my tips in a year. After watching this video I went out and bought the the product and within 5 minutes they looked like new. Thanks for video.
What's the name of the cleaner?
Get on your knees and buff that tip😂😂
CARLOS LOS 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Always clean your tip.
That's what she said.
@@jasonkresock2196 that's what she did, lol
@@triggr74 That's what she does!
@@blam9346 that’s what she’s gonna do!
You must got your tip cleaned with rubbing alcohol with latex gloves at a spa..... happy ending lol
I used a old piece of clay bar on my stainless tips, works amazing & leaves them shinny & smooth.
Great tip thanks! I’m constantly trying to keep the nice shiny exhaust clean on my focus ST.
Nice to see Harvey!
For the grimey bits underneath use a scourer which has been used and nearly ready to throw out so it is not too abrasive
Good one Mike,..I'm constantly trying to keep those tips clean on my Escape and Mini Cooper,...they look great when they're clean!
That stuff really is incredible! Nice job buddy!! Love the TFL pro tips
I have a Focus ST with a Borla exhaust. I have to clean the tips every time I wash the car, otherwise they start to look like your GTI tips.
Thanks for this tip brother. I have a Volvo S90 and it took no longer than 5 minutes to bring those exhaust tips to a brilliant chrome shine. Cost me 5 minutes and $3.00 for a bottle of that stuff which looks like it will last a lifetime. I've seen recommendations from detailers using steel wool, expensive chemicals, drills with sanders, etc. This worked for me; cheap and quick. Thanks again!
Steel wool is all you need . Grade #0000
You’re welcome
Edgar Diaz that’s what we use at the detail shop
Exactly that and a metal polish
Edgar Diaz does that affect burnt tips?
my exhaust tips haven’t been cleaned in 10 years because of the previous owner and they’re dirty asl and I tried steel wool and that barely does anything
Steel wool with the built in soap, and chemical guys wheel cleaner get it all a little damp and scrub.
No Gloves?! I used the powdered version and it explicitly said don't get it on your skin. Now that this video is almost 2 yrs old did you find a better product to clean the carbon off or keep it off?
Its visible that you put alot of work into the making of this video. Good work, jeep it up.
Here’s what I’ve used on my ‘15 with great success. It’s called Mr.Metal. It’s a white cream very similar to what you used. The added benefit is that it has a protectant/wax in it that will help against further corrosion and help bead water, etc. I used a dot or two on an old microfiber towel and “floss” each tip. They always look better than new.
I never cleaned the chrome tips for my range rover in last 8 years and they were in pretty rough shape. This thing cleaned everything right off and the tips look brand new!!
I always use Never Dull Wadding Polish on my GTI. Quick, easy and shiny. Works great for me.
That’s the best
Tips look good. Off topic, what roof carrier box is that? I am shopping for one for the new GLI.
perfect timing for this video, I was just looking up how to do this because I was going to clean the exhaust tips on my car tomorrow.
Yeah, my 2013 F150 Ecoboost does the same thing to the tip. I finally just got a new tip... It's a black powder coat dual outlet tip.. Looks much better and no need to try to keep it 'clean' now.
Damn that mechanic tech knows his stuff! Awesome video 👍🏽
I recently cleaned and polished the exhaust tips on a Ford edge with a ecoboost engine. The tips looked to be in a similar condition as yours. I used Garry Dean chrome cream and I got them near perfect in less than 10 minutes per tip.
I actually really like this video, good vibes, great info, subscribing!
I recommend P21S Metal Polishing soap or P21S Finish Restorer. It will get better results much faster. The Bar Keeper's stuff is more readily available and is probably good enough for regular maintenance.
Autosol is great for getting Gti exhausts nice and clean, I have a Mk7 Gti and use this regularly to get the edge of the tips clean from the carbon.
Bring that awesome car by the garage and we can get to it with some Wizards polish. How about a full detail? I still have some Adams ceramic coat. Just did the MINI for winter and it turned out awesome! Love to have you guys back! Franny
Does your car have front suspension creaks when going over bumps
Excellent no nonsense video, will definitely try this soon
You watched that entire video and genuinely believe there was no nonsense?
How about a video or aggressive vs subdued driving with the GTI and assess the mileage
I love Bar Keeper's Friend for a lot of tasks. It cleans burned stains out of Corning Ware cookware (cassarole pans) really well if you use them in a really hot oven and meat juices get burned on. By the way, TFLnow, I love your local hardware store! Hard to find a store like that nowadays. I so want to go right out to the garage right now and try this on my 2007 VW Jetta Fahrenheit's pipes. They're black as coal - never been cleaned in 12 years, so you shouldn't feel too badly about only three years! Thanks for this video! And very interesting input from your friend, the mechanic in this video, so I thank him too.
I used mr clean magic sponge it works really good
Im having the same thing with black tips. Despite cleaning it, give it few days it’ll be black again. So is this a normal thing on a gti? Ppl say car is running rich that causes it.
"This would work better if you don't leave it for... (checks watch)... 3 years." LOL!
How many dead hoo mannequins can you store in that roof box? ;)
5:00 Try not to shake the bottle when showing it to camera please. Thanks for the video.
"pause" Since 1998
Two things: Never Dull works great for this and never let them get this dirty!
Eagle One Nevr Dull will do it as well. Just keeping the habit of cleaning them often should do the trick as well.
Looks amazing. I like the P21S polishing soap for the heavy soiled tips or the P21S total auto wash. A clean exhaust tip makes a massive difference and if you want the easiest way to maintain them after a polishing is use a ceramic coating like CQuartz UK and they will be SUPER easy to keep looking clean and shinny
Doesn't those coverings normally made for paint just burn off?
To hot for coating
the boost may have something to do with the extra carbon, but VW's and audis have catalyst emissions control systems that work differently than the exhaust re-burn systems in every other car. the owners manual mentions some of the extra maintenance their emissions systems require, especially as they get older.
I used to clean these tips with KC12 chemical. It worked really well. Very shining, looked just like brand new. Will last about 2 weeks. :)
Great video 👍
Wow, couldn't of come at a better time. Mine suffer from the same at 3 years. Time to clean, now chip that thing!
How is the reliability been???
I have used the same bar keepers friend stuff on my mom’s 2011 Acura TSX exhaust tips and it looks good
Seen a rip in the jeans, I know he was scrubbing for real !!! The EFFORT WAS THERE INDEED ! Lol, thank you.
Nice job now you made me feel bad because I have cleaned my exhaust tip in months Lol!
Try tar remover for the remaining spots
Awesome video straight forward👌
I love Bar Keepers Friend for cleaning stainless steel pots, pans, and sink. The oxalic acid in it is kind of harsh (dry peeling hands) so I recommend wearing rubber gloves when you use it. I do.
So that's why my hands are dry and peeling. Thank you! I've got nitril gloves for the next time I use it.
well... my e34 has a really really dirty chrome tailpipe .. from the last owner ofc but i can't clean them good, any other methods?
same the last owner of my car never cleaned them 😭
@@markhart6855 ohhh some people never take care about any shit for their cars man this is soo sad to see
What am I watching? Ask this old house? 😂
Thank you thank you thank you!! I’ve been trying to figure out how to get my tips clean on my MK7.5 GTI and have been failing miserably. My friend told me the only option I had was to buy carbon fiber tip covers. So I made one last ditch effort to look on CZcams. I can’t wait to run to Home Depot later to see if I can find this stuff. Thanks again! Btw, I’m a fellow Washingtonian too. 😊
SOS pads work great, I didn’t do mine for like 6 years, and they cleaned right up.
I scrub the tips on my F150 Lariat with diet coke and a wad of aluminum foil when things get this bad (or worse). After the coke/aluminum treatment, I'll follow up with soft scrub. Then rinse with water and dry with a microfiber. They come out looking brand new every time.
this worked great, thanks! never thought of using bar keepers friend, already had some in the house
😀
i just got a gti and i’m cleaning it and getting it all good looking and saw ur plate covers and i did in fact used to live in puyallup and i feel like that’s funny
About 2 decades ago I experimented with a grill cleaner on my exhaust tips, inside and out, it worked wonders. Sprayed it on the outside and inside and let it sit. Most of the buildup simply dripped off on its on. Then used a simple rag to wipe, wash, and wipe again. Looked brand new.
Great video, the production effort was 100%
I liked this. Fricken great video and very descriptive and awesome
Great video. THis stuff works like a charm!
Great video and informative.
Good video I was thinking on cleaning my exhaust tips as they are dirty but not that dirty lol
Mcguckins is still there, my dad used to take me there all the time when I was really little until we moved like 10 years ago
What if it’s black and brown , will it remove the brown dirt or rust ?
White vinegar also works well to clean chrome & chrome plastics
Matt Ward yea i use white vinegar bakin soda salt am lemon juice lol
Simple Green works well for me, straight, not diluted with water.
I like this video. Looks like fun. Good work! Keep Up!
More videos with Harvey!
Are those GTI wheel rims considered "aero" rims? I like the look of them - think they'd go well on my Alltrack.
The wheels are called "Austin". I have a set for sale actually.
I did the same method, it worked fantastically. I had to use the abrasive side of the sponge and a butter knife for some of the worse spots.
Yeah Colorado people. I work out of the airport in boulder . And I live in Thornton. But I like the video. Good content. Maybe we will be and cruise one day. I drive a 16 sti my boss has a 18 rs. Good work
That is so mad I was just cleaning my brothers GTI and tried to clean the exhaust tips with no luck. Thanks for the helpful video
SOS Pads do a good job as well.
the bottom of mine were impossible to clean normally. Over the years they have been sand blasted rough so the carbon sticks solid. A wet sand with 800, 1200 then polish to mirror finish
I use acetone to remove the black stuff on my exhaust and mother’s metal polish to polish it up
Why do you have Washington state plates when you live in Colorado?
college
Yep ^
Great video, do you think soft scrub will work?
nice video
I was so happy to find this video. This is the easiest time I have had cleaning my exhaust tips. Thank you for a well-made video.
Great video!
Wait you did a video of you looking at a video of how to clean exhaust tips???
CLR 50/50 solution will cut your time drastically & much less need for scrubbing. It will cut through it all, I've used it on my exhaust tips and by far the best thing to dates.
Autosol Marine Shine works a treat! Pretty much any metal polishing compound in fact.
Toothpaste works well. Using COLGATE - you get a ring of confidence!
Toothpaste is a very fine abrasive. Cleans light paint scratches, plastic headlight covers.
Nice SKX
Oil Eater and a ScotchBrite pad to clean.
Then apply Wheel Wax to keep clean longer and making future cleanings easier.
Thank you!! It really works!!!
Great video
I like the explanation part, its nice to understand why my tips get so dirty
What is that black thing on your front licence plate?
Looks like an EZPass or a toll pass
@@BernonCars Thanks. In Norway they are beige and on the inside of the windshield, so I would not have guessed that.
It's for tolls!
Thanks Mike this was amazing help. I tried it and it really works
LOL, I was wondering about the Washington Plates with the CU Buffs sticker. An hour and 1/2! OMG. No wonder they look so clean! But I guess that is a really long time since you cleaned them. I was in my garage and spent about 4 or 5 minutes using some blue Windshield washer fluid and a rag and mine came out pretty good. I'll probably pick some of this up though. Thanks for the "tips". PS. Boost Creep is where I got my car Dyno'd a few years back!
pretty much any car used for short journeys get soot in the exhaust.Turbo or not.
baking soda may work just as well or better and won't scratch . i haven't tried it on my tips. but i use it on my nice pans and it doesn't scratch.
Thanks for another informative video. Your pipes look 👀 amazing
Thanks alot it did help me alot
I love Flitz, doesn’t take much! Reminiscent of the old Neverdull wadding, makes a super black paste in the process.
Very helpful
Tldr: Barkeepers Friend polish in the Wal-Mart kitchen cleaner aisle.
Ill have to try it
Good job dude thank you
I wonder how that stuff works on wheels with brake dust build up. hmmm
