    Do you think cis with an emphasis in information security is fine to go into even though I might want to switch marketing or product management in future or MIS is a better route.

    • @in5minutes289
      @in5minutes289  Před 3 lety +15

      In many schools, there’s not much difference between an MIS and a CIS program. Both will qualify you for a role at the intersection of business and technology. If a CIS program is offered by a business school, it’s usually not that different from an MIS program. However, if a CIS program is offered by an engineering college or college of technology, it is likely to be very technical and have very few business courses. If you are leaning towards a business role (e.g. marketing or product management), then you should probably go for an MIS degree: it’s a business degree with emphasis on technology. If you want to do technical work (e.g. security), then you might be better off with a more technical CIS degree. Another consideration is that with a technical degree you can always step up into a managerial role. But it’s harder to transition into a technical role from a managerial background. Most entry level jobs are technical. With some experience, people move into managerial roles (with or without additional qualifications in business like an MBA). Nobody will hire a fresh graduate to be a product manager or project manager.

      Nowadays, many people start with Python and this is OK. But if you are serious about programming, I would suggest you start with Java, C#, or C++. Starting out with these languages can be tough, but this will give you a good foundation in OOP and instill good programming habits.

    Is CIS the best major for someone wanting to be a front end web developer?

    • @in5minutes289
      @in5minutes289  Před 3 lety +12

      I do think that CIS is a great major for a front-end Web Developer. A CIS major is typically exposed to web design technologies, programming, and the business context. Quite often, developing effective front-end solutions requires understanding the business context within which end-users utilize these Web solutions.

      I think both are approximately the same. If you want to be more on the business side of things (e.g. Consulting, System Analysis and Design, etc.), then go for MIS. If you see yourself doing technical work (e.g. Programming, Databases, etc.), then I suggest you go for CIS.
