Star Fox Command - Good Ideas Beyond The Garbage

  • Star Fox Command on the Nintendo DS is pretty universally loathed for its touch-screen flying controls and poorly written story with no clear, canonical ending. Much like its GameCube predecessor, Star Fox Assault, it's often forgotten to have even existed by knee-jerk reaction gamers everywhere. But beyond the gimmicks and bad writing, there are some very good ideas (even if just mere face value) that if executed properly in the future could help push the series forward, or at the very least, produce a good spin-off game. This video's purpose is to show examples to that end.

Unlike so many other reviewers, who seem to love to hop on the bandwagon and trash these games, your feedback comes from a genuine love of the series that is clearly apparent. And you know what else I like? You always end with a happy outlook, hoping positively for the future. It's really refreshing, and gives me hope for the IP as well :)

      Either way, it seems the writing team behind this game wanted her out of the story entirely for some reason, it really does feel like there was some spite for her character whenever she was on screen, then they try to reboot the series with Zero, it’s like they’re trying to make up for something, Nintendo couldn’t just let Dinosaur Planet be it’s own thing and wanted it to be a Star Fox game so badly so it’s like there was an attempt to try to get the whole story of Star Fox Adventures out of canon, but it’s too late for them to try anything, the fans love Krystal and want her to stay.
      Of course I’m just making assumptions but man, Command is just so bad and out of nowhere.

    i have a tendency to adore games that usually get hate compared to the rest of their series (dream team is my favorite mario & luigi game and i love pokemon black/white 1 and sun/moon)

    I've been hoping for a long time that Someone at Nintendo would breath new life into Star Fox. There's so much potential in the concept of freely exploring the Lylat system combined with on rails segments of a traditional Star Fox game. Command had a lot of good idea's to fit into that template it just failed (spectacularly) to execute them properly. I'm hoping that on the Switch or maybe the Switch's predecessor see's that game come to fruition.

    I hope Star Fox has a bright future that puts the heat of Solar to shame, the SNES Classic was sold primarily on Star Fox 2 being on the system, giving it the honor of being the last official SNES game ever released, and Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions shot threw the roof once Star Fox 1,2, and 64 where made available on the Switch Online emulator. Star Fox is once again proving to be the franchise that just needs a chance to breath and it could surprise with an Official Switch release.

    fox and krystal end up staying together, fox and wolf settle their differences, leon stops being a fanboy for falco, and venom gets purified and DOESNT become a war planet.

  • @shreksnow1918
    @shreksnow1918 Před 2 lety +2

    It’s really interesting how this game has some really good ideas, but has absolutely atrocious execution mixed with bad ideas. It’s too bad that Nintendo basically killed Star Fox due to their own incompetence. Luckily we have people like UndyingNephalim who’s making his own Star Fox game called Star Fox Event Horizon. It’s basically a reimagining of the main story for the games taking ideas from all three timelines/reboots (now I know that Nintendo never officially came out and said that there’s different timelines, but there might as well be because each reboot has it’s own continuity). One thing that’s really cool is the guy’s added different ships you can play as that all function differently. Unfortunately it’s entirely all range mode with no on rails sections. It will be really interesting to see how he fixes the Command story to make it linear.
    There’s this other guy who’s making a reimagining of Adventures that fixes a lot of the stuff that didn’t work, along with adding in new stuff that makes sense (czcams.com/video/JGEGPeO_RX0/video.html
    czcams.com/video/4WJeCsYPlHc/video.html). I talked with the guy in the comments and he was saying that Andross is dead and it’s just a military alliance, the Krazoa are the ancient ancestors of Krystal’s people (they seem to be native to Saria in this version), the Great Fox will be very involved and he described it as Fox being like Han Solo with his crew and Krystal being like Leia as a Jedi, Scales miss interpreted the Krazoa as being gods and I’m guessing he probably wants to ascend. It definitely looks really cool.
    I think that some of the endings for Command aren’t mutually exclusive, and could be meshed by having the different endings have their events rearranged. That way we could have the best of both worlds. This is only true for the good endings.
    It would be interesting to see a Star Fox racing game. Although, it would probably be much better for there just to be Star Fox themed cars in F-Zero.
    There was this 2 hour live stream UndyingNephalim did where he and this other guy were talking about their work on this game game called Project Kursed. It was supposed to be either a first or third person shooter running on the Source engine (basically a Half Life 2 mod). For the story (which he unfortunately didn’t really go too in depth on, probably because it was mostly just weird furry stuff😂) it would take place as Krystal being a bounty hunter, and she’d eventually learn about her people and their connection to the Krazoa. One thing that was really funny was how they said pretty much nothing ever got done because the lead guy just kept bringing in all these weird people who weren’t skilled at all, and none of them ever did anything. As atrocious as this idea is I think it could actually work. If you were to take the idea for different planets that act as hub worlds and expand it my making the game a mash up of Prey 2 (I am so sad that masterpiece never got made) and Star Wars 1313 where you go after different bounties, and progress the story. If the bounties were procedurally generated, and the missions were fine tuned to allow for a variety of different gameplay approaches then I could see this being really good. Sadly, there isn’t much that remains of the thing, and nobody is going to take this idea and make it work.
    Excellent video! I will have to watch your Assault one.

It was just marred by awful touch-screen controls and really bad story-writing (and I happen to enjoy Star Fox's storytelling too, it's like a cross between 80s mecha anime like Gundam and Macross fused with American Saturday Morning Cartoons).

    I actually didn't hate Star Fox Command. I think I got all nine endings. It seemed like a breath of fresh air after Star Fox Assault, whose on-foot run-and-gun-focused gameplay I did not much care for at the time (though revisiting it via let's plays I like it more). It was back to flying Arwings, with some strategy stuff from Star Fox 2 mixed in. The stylus controls weren't terrible (everybody thought Metroid Prime Hunters was such a gamechanger but they can't brook steering an Arwing with a pen?) and plotting the ships' routes on the map with the stylus made perfect sense. The writing was a bit naff, but I've read enough Sonic fanfic to be used to that kind of thing (and it's *tame* compared to Sonic fanfic).
    It was a good game. A quasi-return-to-form for Star Fox. I'd like to see a *total* return to form, but Nintendo considers Star Fox an experimental property to try out new gameplay ideas, and after Star Fox Zero I'm not sure they want to do even that anymore.

  • @nintendsoad
    @nintendsoad Před 2 lety +5

    Creativity in storytelling just seems to be at an all-time low right now, and I completely agree with you about how cool it would be to jump out of the Arwing and explore the planets of the Lylat System. But much like modern Star Wars, we are confined to the same known locations, we have to do deal with character inconsistencies (Krystal and Fox's relationship in this game), and the plot cannot evolve beyond what is already familiar to fans of the series.
    If I may, I would like to ask fans of Star Fox a question:
    Would you prefer the series remain the stagnant, but mostly inoffensive experience it has been since Starfox 64, or take the weirdly experimental approach the Sonic the Hedgehog series has endured since gaming jumped to 3D that has (in my opinion) produced mostly crap games...with the occasional gem?

    • @GoodOldDaysGaming
      @GoodOldDaysGaming  Před 2 lety +3

      I would like neither, as it has been in its own camp of experimental for its entire existence. Star Fox 1 was all because of the Super FX chip. 64 was for the Rumble Pak (though was also a game without it thankfully). Adventures was a reminder of the characters in an otherwise different game they weren't supposed to be in. Assault was very brief and had bad sound design, but it's the only one without a gimmick that also pushed the narrative further. Command is all about the touch screen. Zero is all about the Wii U game pad.
      I want a Star Fox game that isn't a technology gimmick, but just a good game that listens to many of the good ideas from fans. I don't want to hear the internet majority crap on the franchise anymore with knee-jerk hate because of how it controls. Like Star Wars, there's immense untapped potential, and it's time they start exploring it.
      But I refuse to ever agree with people who say "Battle for Atlas is the only good Star Fox". What I want most is an actual Star Fox game that people can't stop talking about. But I think the series has become something that is cool to hate, tainted by internet opinions, and not helped by Nintendo's gimmick decisions.

    I think the game had good ideas, but dropped the ball so HARD with the characters.
    I think all Star Fox had to do was make an assault sequel that continued developing the franchise we love rather than continuing to reboot 64 100 times or change the narrative so insanely like command. Assault had its flaws, but also its pros and the story was great to me. I personally loved it and see so much potential in it to continue the series. The characters, the gameplay, the local multiplayer, and story were all great for the most part. Personally the thing from command I disliked the most was the story. The fox and Krystal drama was so unnecessary and bitter like a drama fanfic. Fox and Krystal had been developing their relationship for over two games just for it to be put in the shitter. Fox abandoned his entire character for this whiny douchebag and Krystal became a bitter ex girlfriend.
    Command dropped the ball on very crucial aspects and while it had some good ideas like the unique starships and some of the lore, it failed at the more important aspects.
    Overall if Nintendo ever wants to bring Star Fox back, it needs to walk the balanced line of new and still feeling like star Fox. Command was just an abandonment of everything we loved about the franchise with some neat ideas tossed around and Zero felt like a lifeless reboot.

    The original concept for Adventures was a continous switching between Krystal and Saber (who, in later developement got mutated into Fox McCloud LOL) ANYWAY (so WHY the fuck did they do away with that?), and I think that in Assault it was annoying af in several missions, but ESPECIALLY in Sargasso, that you had to constantly switch between fulfilling the mission objective IN the base, but ALSO going outside and helping your teammates because apparently no one can fly and shoot properly besides Fox and the bad guys.

    Man, this video makes me want a new starfox game. It's been so long, (I'm not counting battle for atlas), and the series has so much potential, and this video just proves that. Since apparently none of these endings are Canon, if they were to make a new game, if they did it right they could perfectly close off the franchise in a number of ways. (But starfox must live on! Unless they start making garbage, but even then if the game isn't good it may still have ideas like this one.)
    Anyway, great video Bill! It made me want to play starfox lol.

    My only problem with command is the art style. Star fox 2's sprite art should always have been the standard. Though I wouldn't mind if the next game featured the characters as the creepy marionettes from the original game cover.

    I played this game back in the day but didn't like it very much, found the gameplay too hard and it wasn't fun enough to try harder. As opposed to Star Fox Assault wich was kinda lame too but I had great fun with it played it multiple times trying to improve scores and get the medals and even played the multiplayer with some friends. This franchise has been overlooked by Nintendo, imagine if they did for Fox Mccloud and company what they do for Zelda or Mario, at the very least let Retro Studios give it a go..

    This is Why the Games Should’ve stuck with the On-the rails gameplay before Adventures and Assault Updated gameplay with the On-foot to Vehicle Play!
    Nintendo pressed this series into nothing but Gimmicky Toy/Hardware Functions for Waaaay Too Long!
    And the recent Offerings with Starfox Zero and the Toys to Life StarLink Game didn’t help that either!
    And now Nintendo is right Back where they started! As much as Miyamoto wants to
    Continue pushing Hardward gimmicks onto the Starfox series, it’s not going to Do the Series any good by Continuing to Double down On this Design sensibility!

    I have to say, the artwork in this game is not the best at times. The bizarre soap-opera endings are what ruin the game the most for me.

    9:54 Even if one of them is canon, it won't be used anyway, making it useless.
    10:04 It's a generic answer, they don't even know what the canonical ending is, they most likely thought that the default ending is canonical because you can't make other choices on the first playthrough.
    10:49 - 13:37 Well, many of these endings don't seem plausible at all, some are pointless and others are literally fan fiction where they don't even know what they're doing.
    In conclusion, this game doomed the Star Fox saga, due to bad writing, bad character characterization and endings.
    In fact, after this game, we didn't have obteined any new original Star Fox games that aren't based on Star Fox 64, and the cast of characters post Star Fox Adventure didn't even appear after command was released.

    It's a shame that we never got a Star Fox game to succeed Star Fox 64. The closest to it was the Nintendo 3DS remake. Star Fox Zero would have been better had it not been for the Wii U gamepad controls which were mandatory

      I literally faced palm when I read your comment. I'm sorry but you can't say that the closest one to live up to the expectations of sf 64 is sf 64 3D. That is literally the meme of "MM yes this floor is made of floor". Of course it's going to live up to it because it is literally the same game with just a graphical overhaul. It's like saying the only zelda game that is as good as ocarina of time is ocarina of time remake on the 3ds. COMPLETELY different from saying botw is just as good if not better then ocarina of time.
      That's not even mentioning Zero which besides the controls (which I learned quickly) the story is basically the same as 64 3D, 64, and the original.
      Can we not have another good star fox that isn't 64 again?

      I agree! Elements of 64 in gameplay would be great to have, but rehashing the Lylat Wars from the Original and 64 would be Overkill!
      Honestly, I just want a new Star Fox Game without it being tied to a Stupid Hardward Gimmick! But if Miyamoto is going to Double down again, then honestly I don’t see the series progressing till After he get taken off the reigns of it, or the Game is given to a Team willing to do something With this Small franchise!
      I mean better that than killing the series outright.

    Ugly character design, the prologue is just sad, mean spirited characters, retconning krystal's character even forgetting that she's telepathic (which means she would have seen through fox's bs) new ones falling flat (amanda and lucy) while redesigning old ones for he worse (katt and bill), bland story, forgettable villain thats a major step down from Andross and the aparoids, the soap opre stuff between fox and krystal is so pathetic. It repeated the rival helping the hero trope that assault already did and did better, gameplay is repetitive and goes on for too long, not warranting multiple playthrough's (and you don't get anything for doing them all, just new menu music) and I remember how it made my hand cramp, awful graphics, had fanfiction endings where i've seen fanfiction do better, BUT i did like how you could play as multiple characters with their own designed ships that had their own attributes, and falco had a couple of funny lines.

  • @shreksnow1918
    @shreksnow1918 Před 2 lety +1

I talked with the guy in the comments and he was saying that Andross isn’t a ghost, and it’s just a military alliance, the Krazoa are the ancient ancestors of Krystal’s people (they seem to be native to Saria in this version), the Great Fox will be very involved and he described it as Fox being like Han Solo with his crew and Krystal being like Leia as a Jedi, Scales miss interpreted the Krazoa as being gods and I’m guessing he probably wants to ascend.
For the story it would take place as Krystal being a bounty hunter, and she’d eventually learn about her people and their connection to the Krazoa.
