My assumption is that the filter actually filters out things like hair, dust, and other relatively “large” physical things that can fall into the water. It does not filter out bacteria and other chemicals that tap water can potentially have. I personally always use “human” drinking water in this fountain for my pets, and by the end of a month the filter is covered with hair and dust that naturally accumulate over time in a house

I believe they recommend changing it once a month. That’s what the first model of the device suggested.
