This is a 2021 CX-5 and, while it hasn’t received a mid-cycle refresh…sorry flashy graphic fans…it does see a number of updates and improvements. Let’s see, what’s new?
Well, the fanciest Signature trim, like we’re driving here, gets a 360-degree camera system and an automatic reverse braking feature, so you don’t smack the car behind when parking. And across all trims, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity are now standard, as is this 10.25-inch display. I like the screen size and where its position. Plus the interface looks slick. But it’s not a touchscreen. Like...at all.
Using the rotary controller to make inputs works ok but, I would contend, you’ll spend more time staring at the screen vectoring the cursor to a given icon than if you just pushed that icon with your finger. If you feel differently, I’m sure you’ll leave a respectful counterpoint in the CZcams comment section.
Other updates for 2021 include the death of the short-lived CX-5 diesel and the arrival of a Carbon Edition to the lineup. Based on the Touring Preferred SV package, the Carbon Edition adds black gloss trim, Polymetal Gray paint, 19-inch black metallic wheels, red leather seats, and a black honeycomb interior trim that, despite the name, is not made from carbon fiber.
Interestingly you can get the Carbon Edition with either of the CX-5’s engine choices. Ah, I love a convenient segue. The base engine is a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder (187 hp, 186 lb-ft) offered with front or, for $1,400, all-wheel drive.
The Grand Touring and Signature models employ a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine (250 hp,320 lb-ft) paired exclusively with all-wheel drive, though keep in mind these power figures are only attainable if you’re combusting 93 octane. With either engine, the transmission is a 6-speed automatic. And, if you’re curious, here are the fuel economy figures.
    2.5L FWD (25city / 31hwy) morphs into 2.5L AWD (24city / 30hwy)
    2.5L Turbo AWD (22city / 27hwy)
We have the CX-5’s interior, which is among the most premium in the compact SUV category. The materials feel nice. The controls operate with a satisfying touch. And the cargo hold affords 30.9 cubic feet of space, which is less than the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape but still perfectly workable.
Taller folks might wish for more headroom. Thank heaven I am so incredibly average.
That said, I like that the rear seats have a recline function. I like that the rear doors open wide, which makes installing a child seat easier. And I also like the front seat’s comfortable and supportive shape.
In simplest, slightly more than $25k form, the CX-5 Sport trim comes with alloy wheels, LED headlights, full-speed dynamic cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and blind monitoring. Personally, I’d spring for $1,700 pricier Touring trim to get dual-zone climate control, smart key access, and rear-seat vents, which really should come standard.
Among the more alluring features found on higher trims are leather upholstery, a power liftgate, a digital gauge cluster, and ventilated front seats. Live large like we are with the priciest Signature trim and you’re looking at $37-and-a-half thousand dollars’ worth of CX-5.
The competitive landscape includes names you’ll recognize like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, and Ford Escape, plus countless others. Among those names you can roomier interiors, lower base prices, and hybrid powertrains.
But the Mazda CX-5 has a unique allure. It blends solid value, sleek looks, and joy-filled road manners with just enough practicality to justify its emotional charms.
If you need a compact SUV but you want to feel some kind of positive emotion while you drive it, the Mazda CX-5 remains an excellent choice.

I got this car about a month ago, the "reviews" don't tell the whole story. Go test drive one, there's so much small, little refinements that add up to a quite more decent ride quality than the RAV4 or the CR-V.
If you ask me what exactly that makes this car better, I can't point you to it, it just "feels" better driving this car.
    3 months UPDATE:
I bought the Select trim level.
I noticed 2 downsides from this car. There is no button unlock the trunk from the cabin. The cup holders are positioned very uncomfortably. Other than that, I love this car.

Always having to reach up and touch in just the right spots. It was annoying. The Mazda allows you to sit back, spin the dial and just glance at the screen without having to look away from the road for long periods of time. It's very cool.

This is a never ending theme in Mazda reviews where the reviewer complains about the control knob and then Mazda owners in the comments (like me) swear by it and say they'll never prefer a touchscreen again. I know it's their opinion, but I wish reviewers would catch on or at least acknowledge our ownership feelings because they're so consistent. I feel like it you switch cars often then touch screens are more convenient because they have a much easier learning curve. But the benefit of the rotary dial is that once you get used to it, you can navigate the infotainment based solely on feel and don’t have to look at the screen. I have a last gen Mazda and navigating with the rotary has become second nature. A touch screen would be nice to compliment it, but they’re definitely saving money by not including it

No, on occasion it’s not as simple as pushing on a touchscreen, but I find it much less distracting than my other vehicle, a GMC Yukon Denali. I wish the transmission had one more gear, for the turbo model, and I’d also like a bit larger fuel tank. Other than that, I can see why it tops all the buying guide best compact SUV lists. Great video - Love having the two presenters both of whom were brilliant, informative and entertaining!
In terms of the great infotainment system controversy.. speaking from personal experience, having had a BMWX1 and CX 5 over the last two years, I prefer the rotary dial option.. In BMW I hardly ever used the touchscreen, I generally stuck to the rotary dial especially when driving.
When I changed to the Mazda, I did not miss the touch screen at all. I also tend to use voice commands whilst on the move as it is less distracting than looking at the screen. But whilst on the move, given a choice between rotary dial and touchscreen - for me, rotary dial every time. I found it so quick to get used to where the buttons are/how dial works.
I will concede that when using CarPlay you have to ‘turn the dial and press down’ (rather than ‘swipe and then press the screen’) .. press is slightly easier, but that’s really not a problem in my opinion. I quickly got used to turn/pressing dial..
Maybe one concession would be (like on the previous cx5 model where you could use the screen as a touchscreen when in park) to enable the new look screen to be touch screen when at a standstill. But there’s no way I want to be jabbing my fingers at the screen when driving I definitely find that more distracting.
I tried several different systems out before getting a Mazda, and the rotary dial system was actually one of the key points that sold me the car.
I tried a VW which I hired for a couple of weeks - which was full touchscreen - even for things like the climate control/heated seats/fan speed (which is a nightmare on the move).
I really like the quality of the new screen on the Mazda, I think it stands up well with all the other systems out there and the actual simplicity of the whole system is another thing going in its favour and makes the rotary dial very easy to live with.
Just my opinion from experiencing BMW, VW and Mazda systems over last 8 months 😀

I am 2 weeks into my 2021 CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve lease and I’m mostly happy with it. I came out of a VW Tiguan lease. The seats in the Tiguan were better. There were better breaks on the Tiguan as well. I wish Mazda would give the CX-5 some grabbier breaks. The CX-5 is smooth & refined. There is a little too much piano black trim in high touch areas of this CX-5 so I’m always using Micro-Fiber wiping the finger smudges away. The Tiguan had a few more storage areas that I miss but the CX-5 is more nimble and firm and I can take corners more aggressively lol. I don’t haul anyone or have passengers to cargo volume isn’t a big deal. I wish the Mazda had wireless phone charging and a panoramic sunroof. I do love the power folding side mirrors and power lift gate so much. I also have ventilated seats and a heads up display as well as paddle shifters and a heated steering wheel and the VW Tiguan didn’t offer any of those things. I’m fairly happy but wish I would have spent more and picked up a Volvo XC-40.

After being in a few of these, one thing that stands out is how rock hard the headrests are. I guess it’s a matter of preference but it seems like most import cars have painfully hard headrests. If you ever sit in a ford or similar, you can actually get used to the nice cushion of the headrest and use it whereas on Honda and Mazda products, they’re so hard it’s more comfortable to not rest your head at all. The MPG is also a little disappointing on the turbo models. A Ford Edge that is significantly bigger and heavier achieves the same 21/28mpg on its 2.0 turbo.

Polite counter to touch screen 😆 if you own it, easier to get used to the wheel where as touchscreen will always have to take your eyes off the road. It might be easier initially and for short term reviews, but i think for owners, buttons and actual tactile feedback will be better long term

When I was looking for a new car to buy, I was looking for one without the Engine Stop/Start technology (Mazda calls it iStop), without a CVT/IVT transmission, and no Cylinder Deactivation. I had trouble until I came across the Mazda. The Mazda CX-5 didn't have the iStop, or the CVT transmission (It has a 6-speed automatic transmission), and no Cylinder Deactivation (as long as I had the turbo engine). It checked off all the boxes. I was told by the car dealer, the American Mazdas in 2021 didn't have iStop. For me, iStop, CVT, and Cylinder Deactivation would have been deal breakers. My CX-5 is garaged like a baby, and driven like a grandma would drive it. I'll speed it up after there's more miles on it.

Sure, doesn't stomp like the V8, but I'm impressed how much pep it has for being a heavy 4 banger. Very comfortable riding car and very posh and decked out for 10k less than a comparable Toyota or Honda.

You need to know something about "traction" on Mazda SUVs. I have two 2021, AWDs...CX5 and CX9. Great SUVs but the OEM tires suck. I changed them with Vredestein Quatrac Pro; wet traction is phenomenal. Also the tires have less rolling resistance, hence MUCH smoother ride. Even my wife who is NOT a car person noticed the difference in the ride. ALSO, for those in snow country, the tires are Severe Snow Service Rated (mountain symbol on the tire). "NO" I don't work for Vredestein, I just live by something my late father taught me when I got my first car many, many years ago, "Never go cheap on tires or brakes, they are your life line." Keep your great videos coming!

This is my next car. I've done extensive research in this segment and I do believe that the Grand Touring trim of the CX-5 offers the BEST overall value of any brand. I compared the Rav-4, Rogue, CRV, and Tucson...none are bad cars, but again...CX-5 best value for the money. Most features standard and most reasonable price increases between trims.
I am 6' 4" though, so we'll have to see how leg room is. However, I currently drive a Mazda 6 and have plenty of leg room. This is listed as having 1 less inch of legroom, so I don't anticipate it being an issue. I have a long torso lol

Just bought one today! So excited - I confess being a German car snob before and I drive a MB GLC300. Need a car that can be shared with 16 yo child and considered Corolla Cross, Taos and Tiguan. Toyota too plastic and can’t see a car until weeks from now and putting money down, VW - both I test drove were brand new and they both squeaked (liked Taos more than the very weak Tiguan), ended up choosing CX-5 as it drove so well I felt it closest to my GLC300. Took regular gas, good trunk space, standard AWD and blind spot warning which are important for a young driver.

Odd how everyone who does not own a cx-5 hate the lack of touch screen but people who own one has no problem with it and even like it. Is it more of just getting used to it? I have a Acura RDX and everyone hates the info system on that one also, but it works just fine for me. Was not a deal breaker either way. Good review though especially showing the lack of passenger space. That seems more like a deal breaker for some people.
