It doesn't take much to find yourself in the wall. This was the second lap of Session 1 at the VIR Charity Laps event on 3/2/18. Cold track, cold tires, and 60mph winds made for a tricky track that even skilled drivers had to stay alert for.
"yep, he's done" When you know, you know.
I've been to a lot of track days... It's always the Corvettes.
lol!
Good recovery.
Well that was painfull to watch!
Great video!
I was running sweep for that run & had to go collect that dope.
He was all pissed off, then almost crashed again coming out of Oak Tree.
SMH...
That being said, I lost my car there later that year.
But doing so during a charity lap... T6 hump at the apex, cold tires, cold track, high-HP RWD = recipe for disaster.
That's crazy! Thanks for working the track that day. The Charity Laps events are always great. Yeah, the guy was nice as could be. I caught up with him afterward to check on him, and you could tell he was out of sorts (I know I would be). That hump is deceptive if you aren't used to it, but what got him was the C6 in front of him just has much better suspension, and he tried to keep up when that driver took off. I can't say it's a mistake I wouldn't have made, but that's why there's no replacement for seat time. :-)
@Dave Why is it so insanely expensive to drive your car here? I've been wanting to go since I got my license over a decade ago but it is so expensive that I can take my car to the drag strip 30 times for what it cost to go to VIR once.
@@Impactjunky Road courses are much bigger operations than drag strips. They require a good bit more personnel.
These are charity low-speed laps nobody is supposed to crash, not even Vette drivers. I am sure this driver was excited about telling the guys at the car show how he killed it at VIR.
Yeah, poor guy felt awful and embarrassed. But honestly, that's one of the things I enjoy about Charity Laps events. Since you can't pass, there's plenty of room for people to make a terrible mistake in judgement, get it out of their system, learn from it, and nobody gets hurt. I imagine he's had a lot more respect/fear for tracks and track events since this day. He was a nice guy, we talked afterward, he just made a bad decision in that moment. I'm sure we've all done it at some point.
I crashed in the same spot on a wet track day. Not fun.
Little bump in the track and a Corvette under power equals.....Just like @ IndyCar Detroit.
Ah, poor guy. I ran in session 8 and 13 and had no idea anyone had wrecked that day.
Dillon C , Yeah, first run of the day. Cold tires, cold track, and torque for days. We all make mistakes now and again.
This is a small part of the full video, which you can see here. Hope you like it. czcams.com/video/KsOPCOiA5W0/video.html
ChaseEllisVoice the wind was insane!
Dillon C absolutely. My in-field footage is pretty much worthless. In fact, even my tripod was constantly being blown over. Visually it's a great day, but everything else was a major challenge for sound and cinematography.
ChaseEllisVoice I was debating mounting my second go pro for a wheel travel shot but I didn't want to risk it falling off or deal with the ruined audio.
Maybe next holiday / charity lap will be less windy!
Dillon C I'm considering options like that for the Nov 30th Charity Laps. Hopefully the weather will be more cooperative
oops
Surprised with that sophisticated leaf spring suspension and 505HP on an undulating track that would happen 🤔
LOL
Whenever I watch these kinds of videos I try to figure out who will crash. I called it. :)
Fords are pretty good at handling and as soon as I saw that vette, I knew it would wipe out! Don't they have traction control?? I don't have any experice with them.
Well predicted!
In the driver's defense, I have to say, the C6 in front of him (with better rear suspension) just f***'s off. I do get how a C5 driver could make the mistake of thinking his car was equally capable.
C5 and c6 hanle well too, driver error
Many people turn traction control off on the track to minimize computer "interference". Probably something that should be left to only the best drivers
