- Since watching the 'Rush' film years ago, I've been troubled by the fact that Niki Lauda started as a pay driver. Pay Drivers are supposed to suck. So it lead me to thinking: ' Were there other pay drivers that didn't suck?'

Stroll's Baku podium was a horrible performance. Massa would've won had he not retired
Probably true, worked out for Dad's Cash though
I feel like a lot of people dislike pay drivers especially when you have Mazepin and his career in F1 or other nameless drivers from the past... but we tend to forget that each team is running as a business. We forget that drivers need a lot of money to start their career or that need money in order to get over a hurdle in the same career. And the team needs that money for development. They're not going to choose a bad driver with a large backing unless they are making some bad business decisions. They're going to choose drivers that have sponsors that could benefit the team and drivers that have good experience. Drivers that could help in the development of the car.
That certainly is a good point. The money someone like Latifi brought to Williams certainly helped keep the legendary F1 team going during some tough times
You have to be payed to be in this sport.. good rank by the way”
Always appreciate your comments
ayrton senna was actually a pay driver
Serious or you joking? Or are you referring to his huge amount of sponsors?
While I know your list is subjective and that's all fine. For me, I think you missed a very important pay driver in Kamui Kobayashi who is also the only driver in F1 History to raise enough money to buy a seat thanks to fan donations after Monesha Kaltenborn fired him in favor of that no talent twat Esteban Gutierrez. Kamui scored more than any other Pay Driver throughout his career (excluding the ones that have won a race in their career) at the time. His sacking was the biggest travesty in Formula 1 history because he had real raw talent and showed it.
He scored a podium and fastest lap as well. You have a valid point. He is one I missed. Thanks for a great comment
@@hisSTORYF1 Hey no worries at all, it was a great video. I've watched F1 since 1985 and have followed and loved many backmarker teams and drivers. I have an real love/hate relationship with pay drivers. While I have supported many in the 80s and 90s, I think from 2000 onwards it became ridiculously stupid with just anyone with money getting in the sport. It's sad because many drivers missed their opportunities in F1 due to it. In addition, I never liked it because so many F3 and later GP2 champions were denied seats due to a lower classified driver paying their way to F1. It devalues the GP2/F3 championships when someone who doesn't win the championship can make the jump to F1 instead of the champion himself. There is a lot the FIA and the World Motorsport Council can do to improve this but they let it continue.
Like Mick Schumacher, Logan Sergeant, Latifi. Too little talent, too much money behind them and in Mick's case. A name more than abilities. I've seen it all too often and people complaining about Haas dropping Mick. He was not ready for F1. It's sad really because we do miss out on a lot of potential talent due to it. How to fix it?
I think teams should have a third car and the sprint race is raced by 1 driver per team, their reserve. Not a Sunday driver. This helps team oversee who is talented and allow these reserve drivers to not go years without a drive because they're waiting for their call up which most often never comes.
@@Shanakar WOW, I like the 3rd car idea. Sort of a development car but the points still count towards the constructors title. It's sad that the likes of Latifi and Stroll could buy a drive but someone like Robert Shwartzman has to race in lower formulae, just the financial realities of the sport i guess. Thanks for an intelligent comment, those are rare sometimes 😄
Why the stupid music?
Especially to annoy you. Obviously Im not serious, different strokes for different folks I guess.
Are you South African? 😅
Proudly. There is no way of hiding that accent😄
