In episode 5 of the BMW E30 325i restoration project, I strip down and restore each piece of the throttle body.
I'm not sure what happened to this one, but as I've previously restored my actual throttle body, I thought I'd buy the worst one I could find to make it a bit more of a challenge.

PROCESS:
Firstly I Made sure everything was there as I bought this from eBay with only seeing one photo. It was actually worse than I thought it was going to be when it arrived. I then dismantle the throttle body. During the dismantling process, I found a few plastic pieces were snapped, I later glued these back together. I then let every piece, excluding the TPS, soak in degreaser. After a while, I came back and gave everything a good scrub to remove any dirt or oils. Once cleaned and dried I set about removing any corrosion or rust that had built up on pretty much every surface. Once this was done the throttle body was looking a lot better.
The circular piece on the inside of the throttle body was originally gold in colour. I believed this to be a zinc plating and began the process of trying to re-plate it. This didn't go too well as it was aluminum and was possibly anodized. I'm going to look into this further and find out which one it actually is. If you know, please do let me know in the comments. It plated, but there were little bubbles in the coating and it didn't adhere well. Whilst I was waiting for that to dry I began sanding the TB with 220g sandpaper and worked my way up for 3000g. I then moved onto the buffing wheel with a finish block and finally metal polish. Some pieces required an 80g flap wheel to remove heavy pitting.
Once everything was cleaned and polished and the zinc plating dry, It was time to reassemble. E30 throttle bodies have always confused me. Getting the lever back on was quite the job, but after a lot of faffing everything was back together and working as it should. One final set screw thing with some thread lock was added and the restoration was complete.
Thanks for watching and stay tuned for A LOT more E30 and car stuff in general.
P.S I chose not to port it as this is something I'd like to do during my modding series on this car once it is back to 'factory' and running of course.

Thank you, everyone, for the support so far. Expect a lot more E30 content to come your way. I have a meeting with a blasting company next week, so I'll be stripping the undercoating off soon and then will have her professionally blasted and etched. Oh, and I will be filming the whole thing! Get that bell on!
Can't wait!
Man I really do respect your determination and your ability to keep at it. I wish I could do something like this
If needed, could you do an engine rebuild? that would be awesome
Great can't wait 👍
Have you looked into getting the whole body electroplated once the rust is repaired?
The best thing about your vids is that you let your work do the talking. No stupid music, no droning on and on about how much you obviously know; just sit back and watch the magic happen. Unbelievable! You are literally living my dream. Your talent is remarkable. Thank you for sharing.
I remember your very first video and I recall thinking that your attention to detail far exceeds the other talented restorers out there. You have not disappointed, keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing everything else you share with us.
Thank you Wayne! I seriously appreciate this comment. I have so many video ideas I'm excited to share with you. Thanks for the support man.
The most detail person i ever watched. I'm so satisfied watching u working with a rusted machine.
I'm not a car guy, but I love watching your videos!
I'm sure somebody has asked this a million times, are all the parts on your E30 going to be restored liked this until the entire vehicle is done?
Yes :D
@@RestoreIt can't wait fir a body and engine restoration videos
Wow, this will make a new standard for car restoring. Brand new old car. Amazing as always 👍👍
@@ANNA_Poultry It's a ground up restore. And yes! It's f******'n amazing! :D
This engine bay is gonna look fresh outta the show room
I do hope so! Cheers man
Sad that was not his throttle body but i hope it looks as good.
Show room what? i think you meant fresh outta the factory
Whatever happened please don't put any music
Don't you worry Mohammed, I never will!
@@RestoreIt thanks man. I really enjoy your vids keep up the good work
@@RestoreIt 😂😂😂

@@RestoreIt Appreciated enormously!
The "Thumbs down" and negative comments are glowing reports of other's inabilities. Keep killing it man, you're a huge inspiration!
The odometer needs to read 000000 when you’re done with this thing! 😆

Rudpavv Rudpavv nobody will be able to tell

@@Jaszczur-sp2tx not where I live!
After watching this video, I just realized you would make a hell of a dentist.
I was really looking forward another e30 vid. I was almost getting impatient ahahah.
Great work as always!
Thanks man. I know i know its very over due. A LOT more e30 stuff to come now.
Seriously this guy is special. In a good way. The countless amount of restorable parts I chucked in the scrap pile.... wish I had a friend like you the things we would accomplish.
This series are sooo satisfying... Please keep doing them, I want to see that E30 in all its glory
I can watch these all day. Love your care and handling here mate.
Love how much effort you put into it
de -rusting the bolts 😂 now that is attention to detail ! What a professional !
You can really see the difference all the extra effort has made , good on ya !
Oh thanks for remind me of cleaning my throttle body before i put my e30 sleep over winter. Great vid again !!
Thanks Tk!
I understand you plan on going the z3 rack route. I love seeing you rebuild an alternator vs replacing it, and I think if you can find a junkyard z3 rack you could make a really cool video replacing all the seals and pinion bearing/rack end bushing and such. Thanks again for the amazing content!
So much respect for your patience!
In a world, we're it's easier to throw stuff a way, it's refreshing/therapeutic to see this kind of work being done. My grandfather would keep stuff for decades just by doing the same thing your doing. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for this comment WDC, I really appreciate it. Working hard.
the level of detail you're putting into every part the e30 is going to look soooo good when its done , good job
Thank you Artful, much appreciated.
E30, respect your elders!
Dude i see you everywhere i go xD
Welcome To The Madness hello
fila1445 welcome to the madness 😂
The fact you even polished the springs……….. the time and effort you put into this stuff is amazing
These videos are so satisfying
Awesome! Been waiting for another E30 vid! Your attention to detail is incredible, I feel like every new vid of yours is better than the last. You truly are a master in restoration. Thanks for the cool videos!
Thank you Brendan! You're too kind. Lots of e30 videos coming so stayed tuned :) thanks again, man.
Я с не терпеньем жду твои видосы)) Молодец мужик, бэха зачет!! From Russia with love)
Can we expect that the E30 build will be finished in 2020?
Amazing work!
2020 is a good estimate! Haha thank you!
I love the commitment to that factory fresh look, excited to see how it all pans out!
Cheers, Liam. you'll see a factory finished E30 (bar a few small details) and then I will do a modding series after, comparing the difference from stock to modded, on each mod.
Your determination and attention to detail in polishing all the pieces really makes me want to do the same on my Fiat Tipo 1.6 IE.
Just a heads up, you'll need to adjust the position on that Throttle Position Sensor, and also, that stopper thingy! :)
As always, incredible work!
Is that what that black plastic Bosch part is -- the TPS?
@@robertbrandywine Yep
I have an 1977 Ford Fiesta i would love to do this to. But i neither have the equipment nor the facilities, to do so... YET... !
Most satisfying channel ever...
Thanks xCaptain!
Oh and for the mating surfaces (TB to intake plenum or the little throttle body-heating-pipe) lay down a glass plate, tape on some medium to fine grid wet emery paper (400 up to 800) and do circular-8 motions. As you might see the discoloration at 12:58 the surface is not flush.
You can buy it new nah I'll just make it better than new amazing skills and work mate
Thank you, Lord, as always!
You are welcome 😃
I have zero mechanical skills but I find these videos really satisfying for some reason. Great content =)
Thank you Dave! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
after hours of this channel im definitely going the e30 route. great content mean dont stop posting
Free tip for adjusting the throttle position sensor: When closing the throttle in rest position you should hear a light click in the black box. This way the ECU knows it closed and it adjusts several parameters. Most importantly it actuates the stepper motor for idling the engine . This will make your engine idle smooth. Awesome job!
Thanks to you I’m restoring my own E28 parts instead of buying everything new! Of course, things that need replacing are replaced, but I’m trying to keep everything as original as possible. Keep up the good work and warm regards from Puerto Rico! :)
Flaring the the bolts inside of the throttle body so they dont potentially go into the engine was genius.
I used to own an '85 325e and i always regretted junking it, but now I'm absolutely kicking myself after watching all your e30 videos.
Anyhow great work and looking forward to upcoming content! Peace.
Cheers Ceaser! You should buy a wreck of an e30 and start fixing that one to redeem yourself. You'll feel a lot better if you do. You may also highly regret it... haha
These videos are so satisfying to watch. You really restore every detail. I know it's a while off but I can't wait to see the brand new E30 when you're done.
What a fantastic restoration, you are an inspiration
That’s what I call Artist at work
dude, nice work, can't wait to see the outcome of the entire car!
Thanks, James, me either!
Great job I can only imagine how long you spent shining that up. When all the springs exploded everywhere I thought million years to put back together, you cracked it. Well done
Cheers Richard, It was a two-day polishing job! So I'm pleased you noticed. It was quite the task getting everything back on as it came off. It was a complicated puzzle for sure. Thanks again Richard, always nice to see you here.
Удовольствие для глаз. Супер!
awesome job ... really great attention to detail
Thank you David.
Loving this channel more and more! Surprised I'm so early! Much love from PR🇵🇷
You're the best... That's all
Look like the seller hauled it up in a net from the mud on the bottom of the English channel. 😄 Nice job! Looks wonderful.
Very hard work!
A tip for stubborn screws like that I use a good set of lineman pliers. Grip very hard in a logical manor and twist. I found that this works better than vice grips because the way the lineman pliers I use are knurled in a way they grip at all angles.
Exelente renovacion! Admirable.
Get yourself a gallon of Evaporust, it’s biodegradable and completely removes all rust. Great work!!!! Keep it up.
Excelente trabalho de limpeza. Parabéns!
I find that using a cordless impact drill takes those seized philips screws out way better than anyone could using a screwdriver, struggled to take the screws out for like 10 mins and almost full stripped it, tried the impact drill and it came out effortlessley without stripping it more than I already had
Awesome job!!! I watch mesmerized many of your videos, even this one that is a little bit old, still hooked on the E30 project of yours... Few things that I can point out that could improve your restoration: 1.- tap out the screw-holes and studs if you plan to keep/re-use them, as well as cleaning the pits of holes. This will improve the removal of the screws later on and reduces the chance of cross-threading or even worse, bottoming out the screw and making a hole or deforming the piece and the end of the screw. 2.- when doing pieces that have gaskets/flat seals, sand them with a flat piece of sandpaper on a block of wood or table (something stiff) to make a new plane so the gasket fits much better. 3.- Bolt down that grinder! It's dangerous already with the speed and you working directly on it with your hands, also I don't know if you use a face shield but in the videos, there is no shield in front of what you are doing. 4.- for sensors/electrical connections, try to use CRC cleaner even to clean the outside, you never know if a drop of degreaser with junk can fall into a crevice and stuff-up your sensor.
Well done. Set that grinder up on a VFD and youd be in love.
I can not wait for the results :D
Me either! Cheers!
So satisfying to watch! Great video!
Thank you, CarEnthusiast!
This is hypnotic. I love your job 😍
Beautiful work!
I was just thinking yesterday "what about the e30"? Guess you heard me, awesome job, as always!
Cheers from the States. I've been using a variable speed 8"delta bench grinder. About $100 here.
Also looking forward to the plating video as I'm about to take that on for my Grand Wagoneer. Zinc plate then yellow chromate.
Good work as always.
Thank you comfort in discomfort. Yes about £100 here in the UK i just picked one up. Zinc plating video is being editing right now, so should be with you soon. Thanks again.
Sou do Brasil estou acompanhando essa restauração desde o começo😇
Fairy tale !!!Well done !
Thanks Vladimir!
Hello! I have watched all of your videos and loved it. You truly are a perfectionist. No way anyone can do this work any better.
Get a household light dimmer switch. Put together a length of wire, plug, switchbox, wire, receptacle. Anything you plug into it is now "variable speed". Drill, sander, polisher, etc.
Hey tip for screws that wont budge get an adapter for a small breaker bar gets you more leverage just dont snap the head off👍
Super job
Wow I love your videos, great job
Awesome video! You're an inspiration
The “stopper thing” is an idle set screw. Keep up the good work.
Thank you. Greeting from Siberia :)
So satisfying
Thanks Xavier!
Awesome !
Full detail
Wirklich gute Arbeit!!! Wahnsinn wieviel Arbeit Sie sich machen!!! Größten Respekt!!! Lieben Gruß aus Deutschland! Leider kann ich kein Englisch. Hoffe, das die Nachricht trotzdem ankommt.
Not sure if you have one, but a medium size air compressor with blow tip can be used to do a final blow off in joints, bolt holes, ect before lubing and reassembly Great job. glad to see people using skills..
Very well done, carberaters are very difficult to overhaul if you don't know what you're doing, and mistakes can easily be made, the finished product was 5 ☆,and a easy video to watch
Excellent work!
Although it takes forever the small things are what make the restoration complete
amazing job as always ...well done indeed sir
Looks awesome! Just remember the idle control screw (the last thing) needs very fine adjustment as it shouldn't be adjusted from factory. Don't know how that is done but know it's uber important.
Keep these vids coming!
Wonderful work it may be a small piece but it plays a big role in running the car
Great work
Ura new video! Brilliant work as always!
Thank you, Hunson!
One tool I can recommend for taking our stubborn philips and flat head screws is a hand impact driver, the kind you hit with a hammer!
Once the car is fully restored, you better get a Sticker of a QR code that links people directly to the playlist of the restoration, because even I wouldn't believe you restored each and every single part of this car! haha
Since you are putting the parts you are using in your description, you can create affiliated links with Amazon. This way you would be making some money when people purchase anything.
I love your videos and your amazing work!
The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) at 10:20, has a specific rigged position with regards to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). It needs to be properly positioned on the throttle body during installation (10:58). That is the reason why the mounting holes on the tabs are elongated to allow for small adjustments. I think this can only be achieved by the dedicated workshops with proper equipment for the BMW engine tuning.
The "stopper" (13:45), must also have a locknut to prevent it from drifting away.
This was a serious hardwork. Great restoration. Hatsoff to you.... 👍🏼👍🏼
Bravo ! Once again you have done super job !!!
Sponsored by Autodoc now? That's sick, you're going up in the world :)
Thanks man!
Beautifully done, great work
Thanks, Yago.
Whould really like to see that e30 when its done!
That look Very nice!!!
You could have used a very fine glass bead like a number 13-16 to peen the surface and give you a polished look. It would have the protected the body from oxidizing and cut down on the amount of sanding and polishing time by hand. Great work regardless, looks better than new!
Some red loctite on those throttle plate screws would have held them in for life. Just a suggestion, keep up the great work!
Cheers kydiesel, Very true, but it might need adjusting.
On SU carbs I believe the ends of the throttle plate screws are supposed to be peened down so they don't fall out.
@@RestoreIt He said throttle plate screws. The ones you peened down so they are going to be unremovable.
Very satisfied work done. Nice video as always. 😘
Thanks man!
@@RestoreIt You deserve 5/5 stars my friend. Now is 5am at my country, i just woke up and i saw a reminder from you channel. I immediately watch it. 👍 Very satisfied.
I love this series.

Thank you, WAJAHAT. I'm going to be focusing more on this for a bit now. So much more to come!
I would love it if he posted these restorations on car parts more often i am also restoring a car atm so these are helpfull
I'm moving to spain and into my own workshop in Jan/Feb time. When i get there, there will be lots more videos :)
Love the videos! Being a mechanic though I cringed when you put loctite on the IAC screw 😬
Good luck to the sorry sucker adjusting that thing!
You are a madman! Love your work! :D
Haha thanks man!
