The uniforms worn in judo are not called kimonos. They are called "Gis". Tim B.

      Hi Tim,
If I am not mistaken, although a bit unspecific, "Kimono" is OK since (according to wikipedia at least) it means "thing to wear". However "Gi" is not only incorrect in that it should be pronounced "Ki", but more importantly it is even more unspecific than "Kimono" to the point where it may be sort of nonsensical, because it is incomplete. As such, "Dogi" or "Judogi" would be the most appropriate. In other words, everyone who says "Gi" is wrong in my humble opinion =)
If any Japanese speakers could confirm or deny this, it would be very appreciated.

Madcat. I'm not trying to be disrespectful or anything but I have been involved with judo for most of my 58 years. It has always been called a Gi, even by the Japanese instructors who flew in from Japan for seminars. Again, I am not trying to be disrespectful but your humble opinion is incorrect. You are mistaken. Anybody can write whatever they want on Wikipedia without presenting facts or citing sources.@@madcat6139

It's usually called Judogi or Dogi, but not Gi or Ki.
The kanji 着 is pronounced Ki or Chaku when used as a verb.
When used as a noun, it's basically pronounced as Gi or Chaku.

You keep referring to Wikipedia. I refer to my experience and my interaction with Japanese masters from Japan. Here's what you do: watch any judo instructional video and/or any book on judo and you will find all references to the uniform is called a Gi. It is a shortened version of its actual term, "judogi". Best of everything to you Have a wonderful holiday season. @@madcat6139
