This DIY (Do It Yourself) How-To video shows how to change the fluid in a typical BMW manual transmission. See our other “Under Car Fluid Changes” videos for; front differential, rear differential, automatic transmission, transfer case, MINI trans-axle and standard under-car oil change.
NOTE:
We are performing these fluid changes on a vehicle lift. All of these fluid changes cane be done "at home" using a common floor jack and jack stands or even drive-on ramps).
On a manual transmission case, there are both a fill plug and a drain plug. The fill plug is normally on the passenger side of the transmission case, near the middle of the side of the case. The drain plug is on the bottom of the transmission, typically at the rear or middle of the case.
Most manual transmissions will need 1.5 to 2 quarts, or liters, for a fluid change. Check the applicable Bentley repair manual for model specific fluid quantities.

The reason for removing the fill plug first is, if for some reason you couldn't remove the fill plug, then you can stop the process and your oil is still as it was.
3:12 - you're welcome
Thanks for a great video! The only difference in my case is that the plugs were 8mm Allen. I have an E46 with 6-speed manual, but the transmission looks more like an E90... Also, I don't have a lift, so I did the following with a 2-ton jack: 1) Lift from right-rear. 2) Fill until it overflows (since the car is leaning forward, this will overfill it) 3) With the plug still out, lower the car level. This will drain a bit more fluid. 4) Raise the car again and put in the fill plug.
Pentosin Mtf 2 is factory fill oil for most Getrag manual transmissions. Royal purple is also very good. Red line is very stiff at cold temperatures...
Do a Vanos rebuild on the s62 engine.
Very professional
Very helpful & concise. Thank you.
How do you clean the fluid pump after changing the fluids in the car? What chemicals do you use for that?
Thanks
Do you have to run through gears as well or no?
Great video, very professional and straight to the point. Do you sell the replacement crush washers on your site as well?
Yes, the washers (when used) should be shown in the online store at www.bavauto.com. If you don't see them, just call our advisors at 800-535-2002. Note that most manual transmissions do not have washers on the plugs as the plugs use a tapered thread ... like e common pipe-thread.
very good video thanks please just tell me is it the same with BMW 328i ??
One question: the "design" team thinks there's such thing as a "forever" transmission fluid. If I pop the metal plug off, will I be able to screw a new plug in or are there no threads in the transmission fluid reservoir?
I have a manual if I’m low on transmission fluid will my car not move even while I’m gear. I think this because I was in 2nd accelerating then I lost all power csr wouldn’t move. Tried moving it in 1st 3rd 4th and reverse nothing
is it me or does it look like drain plug is getting cross threaded?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA SHIT
Agreed looks awkward.. On mine it does not sit that far out either..
New drain plug, slightly different and stainless fittings more or less always look quite rough when being done up
holy crap that oil is dirty
great video!
can some please explain what's the difference between: mtf-LT-2, mtf-lt-3 and 75w90?
what did u find?
I'd be interested.
BMW z4(E85) n46b20b ,6 speed (2006)

2.gear oil type ( ? ,?) liter?
3.differential oil type( ? ,?) liter?

Hello, thanks for your video. Please, i have got a problem. When I start my E90 318i LCI in the morning, when is cold, during the acceleration on 1st gear the car is shaking. Engine is OK, Hardy is OK, car was been at the authorized service where everything is OK. I noticed when I pull up the parking brake with as the same pressed brake pedal, parking brake goes only on a halfway and then is shaking during acceleration. I don't mind where is the problem. Thank you
I have an 02 manual 325xi, My transmission oil cap says "ATF" only, so should I use redline manual transmission oil or automatic? Also how much transmission oil should be used to replace the old stuff?
Mario Aquino Lopez that atf cap under your hood is for the power steering
What oil should i add to my bmw e91 ed 163 hp with gs6 45dz manual gearbox? 75-80, 75-90? and in the differential group? thanks.
Can you tell us if this applies to z4 SMG transmission?
2003 e39 525i ,what is right trans automatic fliud?
What oil is the best for a BMW E30 325i Manual Gearbox ? Please advise.
transmission cooler line broke on my 01 740il. replaced both lines. filled tranny up then started car and went thru all the gears abd filled it up again while car was running went thru gears again then topped it off. it still acts like its low on fluid. what am i doing wrong? anybody got an answer?
Hi, good video, thanks.
Just wondering, would I need a new sealing washer for the drain and fill plugs that came on the car as standard? BMW E87 116i N45 engine. I need to renew the oil soon. I've looked at an exploded diagram of the GS6-17BG/DG gearbox and I can't see a sealing washer fitted but my Haynes manual mentions possibly renewing the sealing washer.
Hey friend, I'd recommend you determine the thread of your plug, probably an M24x1.5, and buy a generic crush washer that fits the bolt. As long as the washer is the right size it should seal, no need to pay BMW prices for that.
@@WhippperSnaperater Yep, good idea, agree. Thanks for reply.
Drive-on ramps, or any method that lifts the front end only, will not give an accurate indication that the correct level of fluid has been achieved when using 'overflow' as an indication to stop pumping. Vehicle needs to be as level as possible.
Looking for a how to video transmission fluid change. 2004 545I automatic thanks.

Hello a little question. Every time a step the trottle at the beginning their is a little shake on mi bmw its manual. What do yo think it is? CLUTCH FELS GOOD
on my 230i it does this too. A little throttle in neutral and my engine shakes the whole car pretty good. Never noticed this in my other vehicles,
How much did it take to fill up one bottle? Or two?
How many bottles does it take to do the job on a manual
My E39 528it has 150K and I have never changed the manual transmission oil because on the transmission casing it specifically says "Do Not Change Oil". If you remove the drain bolt is breaks the seal. Any advise????
There's no seals to break. It's just a fill and a drain plug .... just like shown in the video. And, YES, change that nasty old fluid!
BavarianAuto I guess that message "Do Not Change Oil" must have been a warranty issue. Thanks for the confirmation.

It all has to do with BMW's attempt to show lower cost of ownership.
+Bavarian Autosport And so they can screw you over by selling you a new tranny once it blows from never having the fluid changed!
Hi. How many Litters of oil do u need to fill the gearbox??
usually, it takes a bit less than one liter.
@@danielkalani3101 Do you want people to destroy their cars? This is not correct. It takes 2 litres. 1,9 to be exact.
@@WarningSign1000 the E36 takes 1.1 or 1.2 L depending on model. Also, no one is going to destroy their gearbox. It doesn’t matter how much fluid it takes. You don’t need to know. Simply fill from the fill plug until fluid is dripping out. Once the stream is done, install fill plug.
Why is that some online stores do not show parts for BMW 316?
Only for 318 and bigger. I have 316i, E36, 1996
Too old or just not interested?
the 316 had such a small market that was mostly to parts of africa so the demand for parts is very small
jw200 In Europe the 316i is popular among teenagers and there's good websites that showcase this car. In America, its rare
@@Dunlop5150 false.
Dude I cant get the fill plug out for anything
Got it out. Just took a 6ft breaker bar lifted up with a jack
Fuck
❤
You didn’t even say how much it take
Yas Jasim until the oil comes out
You should have more than enough starting with 2 quarts.
Rip Bavarian
always pass 1st 3 min BS
Failed to mention, the exhaust piping and drive shaft must be removed before hand, should be common sense if you own an e46 but not always the case. But very straight forward video. Now to find out how, to do a complete service on my 330..
wat why would you need to remove the driveshaft?
You don't need to remove drive shafts, what gave you that idea?
he talks way to much man shut up amd get the work done got bored after first 30 sec
