Part 1: Changing Automatic Transmission Fluid & Filter On A BMW/MINI

  • čas přidán 15. 08. 2024
  • blog.BavAuto.com -- Most people think that because BMW and MINI call their transmission fluids "Lifetime" or "Extended Service" it doesn't have to be changed. Not true. To get the most out of your transmission and avoid a costly, catastrophic failure, you should change the fluid and filter every 50,000 miles. Watch Bavarian Otto demonstrate how to do this on a BMW E39 (5 series 97 thru 03). You'll find the specific fluid and filter your BMW/MINI needs in our online store at www.BavAuto.com.

    I am a regular customer of BavAuito, with an '06 X3 3.0 and an '01 530i automatic. I love their products/service as that element of trust has been cemented from experience that you "get what you pay for". Never any troubles from buying the best! I will continue to buy from them.
    THAT SAID, I changed my 530 auto trans fluid at 76K miles. I drive the car fairly easy and don't 'race it'. I did not have any issues with the trans. My fluid came out nearly as clear as the new fluid that went in. Very little grey matter on the magnets. That leaves me with the conclusion that the "30K to 50K" change interval is way beyond necessary. IMHO, of course. Can't thank Otto enough for the great vids!

      Dave, thanks for the good words!
      The idea is that you WANT the removed fluid to look like new fluid. Waiting too long will result in the fluid degrading and changing color and wear particles building up.

    Good point. We do always mention this in our manual transmission and differential DIYs. We don't always bother on auto transmissions as the plugs are not tapered threads. However, this is a good practice to follow. Just note that you do not want to actually remove the fill plug on an auto transmission, as you would lose about a quart of fluid if the engine is not running. Just "crack" the plug loose so that you know it will come out when it is time.

    My 2003 530i has a ZF 5HP 19 transmission. The pan is held on by 22 M6 screws with a Torx 27 head. Getting the first 21 off wasn't too too bad, but the last one took me... I won't say how long. Heating it with a torch may or may not have helped. After trying six other methods, I took a T30 bit and whacked it in there with a big old hammer. Success. Those screws are about $8 each by the way. My hardware store has some stainless M6 screws with a hex head for 79 cents, and I'm tempted to replace them all.

  • @Melv245
    @Melv245 Před 8 lety +7

    Very methodical video procedure. Love it. I was thinking of doing this myself, until I read this:
    "ZF then proceeded to check the software status of the gearbox, reset the adaptations values, and took the car for an "adaptation drive" which involves a series of stop/start procedures, holding gears manually for some distance and shifting through the gears in a specific pattern. This is designed to get the gearbox to adapt to its new values in a very short time.It is essential to reset the gearbox adaptations after an oil change, so unless you have this capability, it is not a DIY project. Failure to reset the adaptation values will lead to premature failure after an oil change."
    Having read this, I'm nervous, but no expert. Please can you reassure me with your advice? Thanks.

    My friend This type of oil change is like draining only 4 liters of Your engine that hold 7 liters and leave 3 liters dirty oil in it , I'm saying this because there is more oil left in the torque converter, by doing this You're mixing new and old oil together
    the proper way to go will cost You little bit more money but its worth it , change your oil 2 times drain it then the 3rd time drain your oil take the filter out put a new one now fill it up and Your transmission is refreshed

  • @azerbaijan9369

    Sir you talked about many things but the main questions was how to changed transmission fluid? You drain the old fluid but didn't injected new fluid. Your video going to be helpful If you were going to inject At less one cord of transmission fluid people be able to see the tools you use for that.

  • @voodoomelons
    @voodoomelons Před 12 lety

    Just a note, it makes sense to crack the fill plug first. Opening the drain plug and finding the fill plug seized can leave you stranded.

  • @bavarianautosport
    @bavarianautosport  Před 11 lety

    Yes indeed - we did forget to show this, but it is something that we always recommend. You don't want to drain the fluid (auto trans, manual trans, differential) and then find a seized fill plug. Note on the auto trans applications - don't fully remove the fill plug, just make sure that it can be loosened. If you remove it before the drain plug, you will drain a quart or more of fluid from the fill port.

  • @bavarianautosport

    The textbook procedure is indeed to use the diagnostic tool to read the transmission fluid temperature. However, if you use an infrared pyrometer to check the temperature of the fluid pan, this is a pretty good indicator of the fluid temp and will be adequate for setting your final fluid level when refilling.
    We offer a nice hand-held pyrometer at bavauto.com , the part number is DPM.

  • @bavarianautosport
    @bavarianautosport  Před 12 lety

    Yes, that's about all you can do. You will still not get all of the fluid out of the converter and the transmission will still have some fluid in it. Performing a fluid change after filling it and running it will get you pretty close to all new fluid.

  • @JohnDoe-gm5qr
    @JohnDoe-gm5qr Před 8 lety +1

    I would definitely recommend loosening the FILL plug before the drain plug. If you have no way of being able to fill it once all of the fluid is out, either because of it (the fill plug) being stripped or you not being able to loosen it, then you are up a creek without a paddle. Not everyone has a 4-point lift for servicing vehicles and doing these types of jobs lying on your back on a garage floor doesn't always offer optimal upper body strength for loosening and tightening bolts.

  • @bavarianautosport
    @bavarianautosport  Před 11 lety

    Not having been involved in this project, directly, we can only suggest that there is either an internal issue with the transmission (shifter rods or detents, or worn shift fork or slider for 5th .... all internal parts) or there is an issue with the shifter install (the external shifter parts and linkage).

    Great informative video as usual Otto.
    I am undertaking this task soon, but need your opinion on a prior posting -
    " make sure you change the oil at least 3 times within the first month. When doing the oil change there is oil trapped in the torque converter that will mix with the new oil and will damage your transmission ".
    What percentage of the total fill amount do you believe will be trapped in the toque converter, and do you believe I need to undertake a few fills / flushes in the first month or so.
    Surely dealers and mechanics at large do not do so, but I will definitely do so if recommended.
    Keep up the great work.
    Cheers, Sal

    We're not sure just what your Elantra uses. It may use a sealant in place of an actual gasket. Which ever is applicable, you can do the same. We would replace the filter if it is a standard style similar to what is shown on the BMW. If the filter is somehow not accessible (or whatever), you can still at least change the fluid.

  • @bavarianautosport
    @bavarianautosport  Před 11 lety

    The fluid was black due to break-down and burning of the fluid itself, as well as wear material (from the clutches). there was not a lot of sediment in the pan, which tells us that most of the blackness was due to the fluid being run well past it's useful life. The transmission ran and shifted noticeably better and smoother, immediately. The fluid used is synthetic and is one of the proper fluids that are authorized by the transmission manufacturer.

The 135i and the 2010-on 128i use the GA6HP19Z transmission, while the 128i thru 2009 uses the GA6L45R (we're assuming that you have a US model). The fill plug for the GA6HP19Z is on the driver's side of the transmission (above the pan mounting rail, facing the driver's side), at the rear of the trans. The fill plug for the GA6L45R is at the rear of the trans housing (facing to the rear of the car), on the driver's side.

    do you always recommend doing a full fluid & filter replacement as opposed to simply a 'flush'? my local dealer says a flush is sufficient, but i'm thinking i should drop the pan and do a full fluid & filter replacement as you guys are showing here. i have a '99 540i with 90K. as far as i know, the fluid has never been replaced.

    Hello there are you recommend that put oil and flush it and then change it again ?? The reason that i am asking is most of them are buying around 10 liters just to flush it on . I must say that my car is 2002 BMW e 46 318 ci UK model automatic transmission .. appreciate your opinion Thank you ...

    Can you answer my questions? Mine is n46b20 engine. I've pretty much similar oil filter and pan. I drained exactly 5 liters of oil which was decent colour, wasn't dark. Then I cleaned the filter with petrol and dried then put it back. There wasn't any O-ring come off when I took the filter out. When I put it back it was tight enough to hold the filter. Then I couldn't fill all the 5 ltrs of oil. End up with filling 2.5 ltr. Then I started the engine. I've noticed noise from transmission like sucking oil with air. Then I tried to fill that i couldn't do that. Then I en up with parking 20 degree slanding then filed all 5ltrs. Is it normal?

    thank you for this video. but do the 520 have the same transmission, or in this case filter, as the 528? I'm asking because my 528 was a 520 back in the days, and I don't know if they upgradet the automatic transmission aswell.

    For US spec models, 1998 would be an E36 ans all 4-door 1999 models are E46, but 1999 2-door models (and all M3) are E36 . Euro models did start the E46 chassis as 1998 models, for 4-door variants. What are the last 7-digits or your VIN?

    Hello. Just need help. my x1 e84 “Drive” gear position is not appearing on my cluster. If it doesnt appear the car is not engaged to “Drive”. If “D” is displayed/appears then its ok. I dont have problem with P and R positions, they dont disappear in the cluster. But the “N” and especially “D” position is not anymore appearing on the cluster, reason my car doesnt move forward. When it sometimes engaged to drive, then few miles my car will display the transmission malfuncition and go on a safe mode. Can anyone help me on this pls. I already replaced the transmission gear position switch but now its more severe. I couldnt move my car because it doesnt go forward everytine i put the gear on Drive position, as it is totally not appearing on the cluster.
