I've been running my dog for 6 years. He's a great partner (maybe a little demanding) but what they didn't mention was running with a CamelBak water pack and a collapsible water bowl to give the pup a drink every couple of miles on any runs over 2 miles. Also, dog bags, dog bags, dog bags, nothing ruder than running through a neighborhood and leaving dog bombs in someone's yard :^) Definitely 5am runs during Summers.

@@annaharding1947 Very true and that will give them an alternative to trying to drink out of puddles along the way when it gets hot. Puddles can be good if they're fresh enough but in cities or if they've been stagnant for a couple of days it's best to avoid them.

I let my dog drink directly from the camelbak, as he's a little too fancy to drink good water from the bowl lol. So squirting water is more fun and he actually drinks :))

I’ve been running with my spaniel for over 5 years and we love Canicross. I’ve made so many friends through the sport and discovered loads of new routes with some amazing views. It’s been a fantastic way for me and my dog to bond and I can’t imagine running without her! As well as my belt, her harness and the bungee line, I never run without a running vest with water for us both, a few snacks and a first aid kit. And I always have a fleece in my car to put her into after a run when it’s cold. Got to keep her nice and warm and protect her muscles and joints. In addition to all of the above, I also have my dog see a canine chiro regularly who gives her a muscle massage and checks that everything is moving as it should. I want to be running with her for as long as I can so do everything I can to keep her jn tip top condition. Enjoy the trails!!

Terrific video. I run with my cattle dog. She is a rescue and found running really helps her. She is a worker dog and is in her element when running. I find the first 15 minutes there are lots of stops to sniff but helps me warm up anyways. If we see a squirrel 🐿 she goes crazy but that’s our fartlek time as we chase a squirrel on a fence.

    • @DogFit

We haven’t used that piece of kit so can’t comment on it and prefer to wear an hydration vest ourselves to carry water, snacks, etc as anything that adds weight to the dogs body over a period of time could possibly cause the dog to get too warm and we try to keep their bodies free to move without restriction or weight on them.

With the hills I have near my place it’s usually only me doing the running and dog typically waits impatiently at the top with the look “What is taking you so long ?”. The most import thing imho is to make sure your dog is properly hydrated. My is usually running un-attached and I let her stop by every spring, and if there are none I make sure to make more frequent stops when running myself. My runs with the dogs are literally my best memories…

I love running with my dog(s). Some comments and opinions:
    1. My vets have always cleared my dogs for run training at 8 months (GSD size) because bones are fully developed HOWEVER body mass and other structures need a few more months so no running over a mile. It is crucial to train your dog how to act/react while on trail so use that time to get the dog locked into what you expect.
    2. I hate running with a dog on a leash or lead. Dogs have trouble keeping a constant pace with you. It’s unnatural for them. Canid’s hunt in packs where variable pacing is normal and extends their chase distance capability. My current dog can run twice as far when she can do variable speeds to my constant pace.
    3. About heat, I’m so glad they emphasized this. One additional item, concrete and asphalt can get really hot. I forgot this once and ended up carry my 35kg dog 2 miles back to the car. If I were a crier, I would’ve been balling. She loved me so much that she acted like nothing was wrong until she simply couldn’t take it no more.
    4. Not all dogs can do this. This is nothing to do breeds. Some dogs just won’t be able to (temperament, desire, etc). Start with some training and tests before investing in the gear.
    5. Be prepared to alter your plan. Make a habit of checking your dog. Just because you can train at a half marathon distance that day doesn’t mean they are up for it that day.
    6. Ticks. Always check for ticks. Even if they have the medication, they can still bring them home to your spouse or children . Guess how I know. I thought I was good at checking for them, I’m better at it now but I’m sure I can improve.
    7. Train, train, train. Your dog will be like a dance partner. You need to know how to move together particularly if you are tied together. If your dog is not doing that right thing on the trail, it’s your fault, not the dog’s.

The nice thing about Canicross is that your dog is on a lead at all times. This will hopefully help from the hearding! Voice commands help to and with practice and encouragement sure your collie will understand what you would like him to do.

@@DogFit Actually (and I know this will probably make you cringe 😉 ) I run on trails mostly OFF leash. They're quite technical, and the chances of taking a digger are too great. (And, running offleash with a very well trained dog is a total joy.) They normally pace out in front of you and will certainly let you know their pace before your legs can catch up!! The speed of your dog can be adjusted through training the use of the Canicross commands (which we cover in the DogFit CZcams channel). Once you've trained the commands and built up their endurance gradually it would be a great idea to get them pack running to see how they run with others...in our honest opinion, it's usually the humans that are the weakest link in the team 😂😂

How fast do you think for instance an average healthy Belgian shepherd in its prime after some years of training could run a 5k?

Some dog breeds are not built for the cold (e.g. greyhound), so as the weather gets colder, they might start struggling. If your dog needs a jacket for the temp is it better to just not run with them?

Especially in first 2-3 km. He usually runs freely - not on a leash, but sometimes e.g. in a park he has a collar and a harness and a regular leash. It's way easier to control him. PS possibly in UK this is not a problem but in southern countries e.g. Italy or Croatia dogs should avoid walking on the sidewalks or asphalt. It's just too hot for them.

I’d both like to respect her rhythm and try and make her steady run like me instead of walking, stoping, running, walking fast, stopping, pooping, running, sniffing, walking etc… all the time. I mean she’s definitely happy, I can see she ain’t in any struggle, but I don’t know how to do leash wise… si for now I don’t use any.

You should start walking the first 10mins for warm up, by then they are stimulated enought to pee and poop after that i keep mine of the grass and go for light jog which is soeed walking for the dog. You are incharge of your dog if you think “anxious” the dog know you are anxious because you dont want them to be anxious. Dont let the dog sniff everything other wise youll be stuck on the same spot and will creat a habit the he she is okey to sniff all the time. Have small treats the re enforce good behavior. Talk you your dog they will be connected to you! Trust the process dont give up

    • @enilizsantiago2317

Its okey to pull the leash, when he she is sniffing and you pull them to you, walk a couple feet and give them a treat, have a key word like “here” or “get on your lane” “stop” “leave it” keep your leash short. Treats treats dont forget. Hope this help! You are providing rules and structure on your dog and eventually you become more lenient when they learn.
